  2. #25 Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-0) vs Seton Hall Pirates (1-0) Date: Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018 Time: 6:30 p.m. Arena: Pinnacle Bank Arena Broadcast: BTN Courtesy of twitter Seton Hall Head Coach: Kevin Willard Location: South Orange, NJ Conference: Big East Nickname: Pirates Mascot: The Pirate Last time out: Beat Wagner Shirt not to wear: Blue, puffy Opening Line: Nebraska by 9.5 Undefeated in football since: 1982 Players to watch: Myles Powell The confident 6'2" Junior guard is the star of this squad and is a threat to score from anywhere on the court. Last year Powell was had 3 senior teammates to share the load so what happens when he's the focal point of the defense? While others will take 3s Powell is the only one who has been proven to be a major threat. KenPom Lineup PG SG SF PF C Pct 1 0 Quincy McKnight 6-4 185 Jr 13 Myles Powell 6-2 195 Jr 22 Myles Cale 6-6 210 So 1 Michael Nzei 6-8 205 Sr 23 Sandro Mamukelashvili 6-10 230 So 14.8 The amount that this lineup plays together stat is worthless at this point but this gives you an idea about the size of the lineups that Seton Hall will roll out. McKnight is a transfer from Sacred Heart where he was a high volume (not efficient) scorer. He'll split time at the point with freshman 4 star Anthony Nelson. Soph Myles Cale started a handful of games for the Pirates last year and seems like the most likely candidate to add more outside shooting and/or scoring to the team. The two starting bigs have been efficient role players thus far and could cause problems for the Huskers on the boards. Not pictured here is 6'11" Syracuse transfer Taurean Thompson who coming off the bench for the moment. None of the post players shoot 3s well and Thompson is especially foul prone. ATM Thomas Allen is your backup PG and you could probably see anyone in the starting 5 bringing the ball up the court. 2. The rotation is going to be tightened for the Seton Hall game. 3. Miles always has the swankiest Husker gear Let's talk about #2 for a bit. For at least this game where we don't play again until Monday expect Miles to play all of the starters 30+ minutes unless there are foul issues. I'd expect Tanner to be in the rotation and then do you need Harris defense or Nana's offense? Who practiced well this week? The Skinny: This is a Seton Hall team with a lot of new pieces after graduating one of their best recruiting classes in recent history. Kevin Willard is a noted "gritty' and defensive minded coach so you'll see his new squad try to dominate the boards, make the Huskers work in the half court, and try to run in transition as much as possible for easy baskets. In some regards the Pirates' lack of continuity helps them as the Huskers excel at scouting and can struggle against the unknown. Seton Hall has had 8 days to prepare plus last season's worth of game tape if you're looking for something else to worry about. However, you cannot simulate the crowd that should be present tonight as Seton Hall has been playing in front of the amount of people the Huskers bring out to a practice. It's not hard to imagine the noise rattling the Pirates at times. What does a 3pt defending team like Nebraska run against a limited 3pt shooting team who will probably look to run inside tonight? Look for a decent amount of 1-3-1 and an experienced Nebraska team to switch defenses at will. The Huskers should generate easy points as well from the shaky PG timeshare that the Hall rolls out. On offense have you noticed that the Huskers have come out firing 3s the first couple of games? A lot of defenses will give this to you to start the game and in addition to it being an efficient way to score it serves the purpose of loosening up the defense even if we're not making them. Is this the game where we start hitting them? The Huskers are more talented, more experienced and have the sort of killer instinct you haven't seen since the Terran Petteway era. Look for the Huskers to make a statement tonight. Prediction: Nebraska 82 - Seton Hall 68 View full article

  4. It depends on who we beat and the B1G bouncing back but yeah this is conceivable though maybe tack on 1 or 2 more wins for that high of a seed. Look at teams like Florida who went 20-11 (11-7 in conference) and earned a 6 seed or TCU who went 21-10 (9-9 in conf) for a 6 seed. The things these team have in common is that they both played Top 30 KenPom schedules (I assume this translates to RPI) 8 noncon wins (easier ones) 1.Miss Valley St 2.SELA 3.SW Min St. 4.W. Illinois 5.Cal St Fulerton 6. Missouri St (neutral) Choose two more from Seton Hall - H Creighton - H Texas Tech/USC (N) Okie St (N) Clemson (R) Look at our conference schedule and in this brand new year and everyone is good. Illinois and Rutgers are projected to be the worst teams and we're playing both of them on the road. It's not too far fetched to think we will have a top 15-30 SOS. Too bad Miles gets fired after earning that 5 seed, winning a tourney game but not hitting 22 wins. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Depends on the rest of the conference. We need teams like illinois to beat Georgetown at home in that scenario. We need an occasional michigan over villanova. Things like that. Or we need to just not lose and stop inventing scenarios. Not losing will definitely work out for us.

  9. I like this class. I think we're bringing in some guys who can shoot and some athletes. The two juniors (includes Dachon Burke) and the two freshmen make for a pretty solid group of athletes. Now, to quote Tim Miles quoting Jim Molinari, "we just need another Copeland and another Roby." Yep, simple as that.

I was also going to mention Cliffy. He was actually a 2 who was forced to play point because we didn't really have anyone else who could do it. He had to learn the position and learn to be a distributor and he did it really well.

Basketball is still a team sport and if he leads us to our first NCAA tourney victory/run, he has more than exceeded expectations.

  20. I have it on good authority that Glynn Watson can't stand Coach Miles and he's going to transfer at the end of his freshman sophomore junior senior year of college. He's as good as gone at the end of this season. He will NOT be back on the team next year. Take it to the bank. I have good sources.

  21. The team might have their own view of must-win games and I'll leave that up to them. From a fan's perspective, we have our own standards and hopes. My goal is we do well enough that we're only thinking about seeding come Selection Sunday and not whether or not we got to the front of the bubble. With that in mind, we have some important games coming up before we get a break against D-2 Southwest Minnesota State. These next 10 games will either build our NCAA resume or make us really sweat the last half of the season. Obviously, I'd love it if we could go 10-0 in this next stretch. I think we NEED to win 8, though. Here's kind of my view of what we need to do: Seton Hall, home -- must win Mo State, neutral -- must win TTech/USC, neutral -- hope to win Western Ill, home -- must win Clemson, road -- acceptable loss Illinois, home -- must win Minnesota, road -- acceptable loss Creighton, home -- must win Okie State, neutral -- must win CSU-Fullerton, home -- must win Nine or 10 wins in this stretch, we're thinking seeding as we go through the rest of conference play. Seven or 8 wins, OK, but we've still got some work to do. Six or fewer and we'll have to chop some serious wood in January and February. Six or fewer and we're going to really regret some Ls come selection Sunday, some woulda coulda shoulda. Some "like to have that one back." Better option is take care of business, win 7 or 8 of these next 10 (preferably 8+), and feel like we're in good shape going into conference play in January.

I couldn't really find a good thread for this, but it seems worthy of its own thread so we can keep track of the progress. Here's the magic number according to Miles: "...if the Huskers can win eight nonconference games, then go 11-9 in Big Ten play, "I think that was like a five or six seed in the NCAA, according to the tool." https://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/mens-basketball/husker-hoops-crunches-the-numbers-in-building-tournament-worthy-schedule/article_2cfab612-6881-58c0-8794-ede8018eaf31.amp.html

    Next 10 Games

If we only get 6 wins in that schedule, then we're probably not a tourney team so I think the question is moot. I think 7 is the worst case, and that's if we have a bad night. 8 most likely, 9 possible because I think we're good enough to beat the Gophers in the barn. Clemson on the road strikes me as a bridge too far for now.

  26. I don't think anyone ever doubted his ability to be effective against the Wayne State and SE LA's of the world. He still has never played against any legitimate D-1 big men. He is much farther along then I would have ever imagined at this point but you may have the cart three or four miles in front of the horse. It could go either way at this point. I saw rebounds in all three games that he would have possessed if he was bigger and stronger but was bumped and he couldn't bring them in. It is my fear that will be magnified against higher level competition. I'm just hoping that he can provide any serviceable minutes at all in big games. As I just already just admitted, he has performed at a much higher level then I thought he would at this point and hope that later I have to admit my surprise again by the level of his performance. His length and athleticism may and I hope allow him to play against the proverbial and literal big guys but he is a big unknown to me at this time.

  28. No, Heiman is way more valuable as a stalwart of the 2nd team on the floor. I wouldn't change that, if anything, I'd be inclined to include Nana if Tom Allen were ever to struggle hitting 3's.

Good post. While Harvey Marshall was not a point guard, I would have loved to have seen the 3 point shot in effect when Harvey played with Hoppen. It's amazing how Moe was still able to get shots for Hoppen despite the lack of a 3 point shot. And along this line of thought, Jack Moore was an amazing point guard. Back then centers dominated the game, but Jack seemed to control most games from the point. But he wasn't a long range shooter, and may have not been as effective with a 3 point shot in the game when he played. In any event, I can't leave Jack off of the top 2-3 point guards to play in the modern era. I go with Lue and Jack as 1a and 1b, and then arguments can be made for ranking below them for the others, including Carr.

Brian Carr played only one season with the 3 point line...I would loved to see him having the 3 point line his whole career how that would have made Dave Hoppen even more dominant. He shot 37% that first year making 58 on 157 attempts.... Brian Carr helped lead Moe Iba's last team to the NCAA tournament after losing Dave Hoppen to injury 19 games into that season....

  36. Nineteen-hundred and forty-nine. Back then, they wore ball-gripping short shorts and canvass hightops. And was Bus Whitehead on the team back then? There was no 3-point line. There was no shot clock. There were a lot of slow guys who couldn't jump, who shot granny-shot free throws. They had jump balls after every score and a high school game in this state might end 2-0. Or 4-2. Back in the days when a high-scoring basketball team might put up 60, we held consecutive opponents to fewer than 40. In 1949. And we just did it again nearly 70 years later. Amazing.

I've always thought Glynn, probably from being a Chicago kid, has some MJ to his game. The way he shoots, dribbles, and hangs in the air on layups reminds so much of the GOAT (except for the size part). He will go down as one of my all-time favorites.

  47. All starters finish with 10+ points. Brady averaging 9.5 PPG. When things are clicking, we look really good. Top 25 good? Heck yes. Depth is starting to worry me less and less. Nana will provide some threes off the bench, Tanner and Brady can combine for 10+ MPG if needed, and Amir, Thor will provide consistency. If Palmer finds his shot, I think he will, we could be deadly from deep. Either way, we are a decent shooting team with a good dribble/drive game.
