    Coach Miles

Man... I'll tell ya what - I tend to be a contrarian at times. Even though I've been a vocal critic (but huge supporter at the same time), it just seems as the tides turn I go the other way. Been seeing a lot about firing Coach Miles, or asking about his job security (on this board and others). Quick question - are y'all nuts? I don't care about how tough or not tough our schedule was this year - Coach Miles just produced one of the best records we've ever had. We have one of the most talented, enjoyable teams I've ever seen in program history. Our players stay out of trouble and out of the newspaper for bad reasons. If this core comes back - watch out. Could easily be the best NU team to ever walk around campus. Our recruiting is fantastic. Our social media presence and fan engagement are top notch. The arena is packed. X's and O's wise - I've seen some adjustments made in the past two years that have made me very happy. The things we are doing take time to develop and build a rhythm. Again - if we can keep this core together, next year could be special. Are there some negatives? Sure. Constant roster fluctuation. Assistant Coaching carousel. Still haven't gotten over the NCAA tourney hump, or made it deep into a conference tournament. But this is Nebraska Basketball... we don't have the program weight to just roll us down some consistent, carved out path that guarantees top 50 recruits, 20 win seasons, and permanent top 4 conferences finishes. We're going to have some down year, some roster change, some assistant coaching changes - that's just the way it is when you're not UNC/Duke/Kentucky/MichState/etc... I am seeing growth. I am starting to see development and consistency. I love our recruiting and transfer approach. I think Coach Miles is still growing and becoming better by the year. I'm all in on the Coach Miles bus. Disclaimer: All of this changes if we have massive roster turnover, especially from unexpected or unreasonable areas, and go 12-something next year. Basketballjones is not to be held liable for any of his comments or opinions.

  2. Bottom line: the 2 best seasons in 2 decades have happened under Miles' tenure, and this regular season wasn't a "hot streak." We are just a good team. That hasn't happened in 20 years. If we keep our core, we're going to be ranked throughout next season. There was nothing fluky about this year, and the coaching philosophy changes were notably better. That's a really, really big deal. God I hope there is no attrition. We could be downright scary next season.

  3. I get that I'm a homer, but I just can't see Penn State getting in OVER us. Their 3 quad 1 wins are all against Ohio State -- which, obviously, is impressive, but not world-beating, and that's literally the only good team they beat. Their record in the Big Ten is much lower than ours. I get that Rider isn't quite the head-scratcher it was at the time, but they still lost to them at home. They beat us in overtime at their place without our big man; we DESTROYED them at our place without theirs. We're 16 points ahead of them in RPI, 1 ahead in SOS (odd but true), and 20 ahead of them in SOR. If you make a case for them, it's purely based on the eye test, and if that's the case, we pass that too. I get that they're kind of the trendy thing right now, but I legitimately don't understand how they're getting any sort of buzz to get in over us.

I think Nebraska can still make it. I don't see Rutgers being out. But I think you can look at USC's resume and pick Nebraska over that. And I don't think Dayton's a lock, although I'm guessing its frequency in the NCAA Tournament is part of its resume (though it shouldn't be.) A scenario where Rutgers is in and Nebraska will sting. The Big Ten - which stunningly has no one on the selection committee - should desire to reward the better (by far) league team. When you're four games and six seeds clear of a team, the Big Ten should offer a preference there.

Maybe they wouldn't have come here anyway but we've had guys tell the staff they've removed Nebraska from consideration because they didn't know if Miles would be there the next year. If you're craving roster stability, you probably want to recruit guys who value stability. Miles' current contract situation isn't screaming stability.

If you fire him, who in their right mind, is going to come here? You set the school record for conference wins in a season and it gets you a pink slip? That sets the program back years. Doc and Collier were regarded as a good X's and O's coach. Who was not regarded as an X's and O's coach? The most successful coach in school history, Nee. Miles gets the Jimmy's and Joe's.

unlikely the AD listens to a bunch of adolescent rage-aholics on the internet. Fortunately. Early on I predicted a full turn would take 7 years for an above-average coach. I want Timmeh to get that 7th and he pretty much will now. We started the year with a team of strangers on the court (to us, obviously). This coaching job can't be underestimated: Miles probably did his best job this season. The last loss always sting--even in great seasons. How many of us still remember Xavier with a surge of stomach acid and bile? And that was the best team this school ever put on the floor. But we also know how great they were, and that's what time does. it restores perspective. It will with this season, too, even if we don't make the tourney (and I don't think that we will, tbh). Still a damned special year. For someone like me, who is largely shut in for medical reasons and wildly isolated from social life, these kind of seasons can add a year to one's life. I'll take it. Happily.

Ehh, It's ESPN, what do you expect. I just got through listening to the B1G Women's Championship game on ESPN2 (Ohio State beat Maryland 79-69). It was the worst presentation I think I've seen. Video was good but the audio was terrible!!!!! You could barely even hear the announcers over the crowd noise, and when you did it sounded like they were talking through mush. And with all the enthusiasm of a wet noodle. The only time the announcer showed even a modicum of excitement was when the game was about over and he thought he was about to finish. Didn't get their names (Paul Sonderland and Christy Winters Scott), but Seriously I've heard Student U announcers do better jobs of announcing. And this for a CHAMPIONSHIP game!!! But getting back to the subject, I'm with @HUD , I am very enthused with our incoming class If Coach Williams wants 'em; I want 'em!

  18. And the truly sad part about this is the NCAA is basically encouraging teams to not schedule the bottom feeders of D-1 and schedule D-2 instead by punishing you for even playing those teams. Those low-end D-1 schools need those paychecks to even have an athletic program. Heck, UNO is in this spot now. So the NCAA allows these teams - almost encourages it - to jump to D-1 with the carrot of the NCAA Tournament. But by using RPI, it makes it far less likely that big schools will schedule them going forward, killing the low-end D-1 schools' athletic budgets, which are already hurting. Time to rely on a new metric or series of metrics. RPI was great in the days of needing pencil and paper to figure it out, because it's so simple. It's outdated. When you can't even figure out how to give a team a penalty for scheduling a D-2 team in your metric, it's a bad metric.

I'm spending the next 8 days rooting like crazy for one team - the FBI. If they can just hurry things along, rise from their underdog status, and take down several other bubble teams - and a few blue bloods along the way - we'll be dancing .... maybe even as a #5 or #6 seed.

if we're being blunt, this team's been playing a ton of "must win" games since they beat Michigan. They did pretty well during that streak. Car just ran out of gas on the last one. We really haven't had enough "big games" to create any kind of a trend. I can't think of any other team in the country that was subjected to what was essentially a month long play in game.

This is a funny statement, because on paper it was true. One of the best high school recruiting classes. But when push came to shove, we put a better product on the floor when 2/3 of them left than when they were here. We kept arguably the most valuable piece in Watson, and found a more athletic and versatile person (Roby) to start at center. Then we threw in two transfers and BAM. 22 Wins. Transfers happen... as you said. For us, it might have been for the better in most instances. Really the only time that we have lost major play makers, we have replaced them with something better.

  22. That is way too optimistic. A&M is in. Very much need them to beat Alabama. Florida State is in. Very much need them to beat Louisville. Butler is in. A loss to Seton Hall will not hurt them. Providence is in. A loss to Creighton will not hurt them. Our best case scenario over the next couple days: Atlantic 10 Rhode Island or St. Bonaventure must win conference tournament ACC Florida State > Louisville UNC > Syracuse (after Cuse beats Wake Forest) Virginia Tech > Notre Dame (after Notre Dame beats Pitt) Nebraska above Louisville, Syracuse, Notre Dame Big 12 Texas Tech > Texas (after Texas beats Iowa State...Texas probably still gets in easily) West Virginia > Baylor Kansas > Oklahoma/Oklahoma State winner Nebraska above Baylor, OU/OSU loser Big East Villanova > Marquette (after Marquette beats DePaul) Nebraska above Marquette Mountain West Need Nevada to win conference tournament Pac-12 USC > Washington (after Washington beats Oregon State; loser of this game probably below us) Oregon > Utah Nebraska above 2 of of the quarterfinals losers SEC Texas A&M > Alabama Tennessee > Mississippi State (after MSU beats LSU) Nebraska above Alabama, Mississippi State WCC Gonzaga wins tournament BYU > St. Mary's (semifinal) Nebraska above St. Mary's -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I see 15 teams competing for 6 spots right now and in this dream scenario I could see us in 4th for those 6. Need a lot to go our way though and a lot of bubble teams to stop upsetting these "quality" teams, which continues to be the case unfortunately.

Charlie Creme has Iowa as a 6 seed, Nebraska out of the tourney. Minnesota as a 9 seed, Nebraska out of the tourney. Michigan as an 8 seed (and did I mention Nebraska out of the tourney). Man, what a frustrating year it will have been if both the men's and women's teams play SO WELL in one of those best conferences in the country and get shut out of the NCAA Tournament, and in the women's case, while teams Nebraska beat get in.

  27. lol... If we don't sweep Wisconsin and Minnesota they both end up not having losing records that makes it 12... If Rutgers beats us both games they don't have a losing record... That makes it 10... If we don't beat Northwestern they don't have a losing record So that is 9... So what exactly are you saying? Should we not win the games? See what you did was, you didn't take everything into account to blurt out a negative statistic. Saying 9 of our 22 wins came against teams with a losing record just doesn't sound bad enough to you I guess. See what you don't get is someone needs to win those games and usually it isn't us, and we are the team with the losing record. Sorry I rather win those 7 games, maybe that is just me though! Edit: Let's say we lose those games Wisconsin = 17-16 Minnesota = 17-15 Rutgers = 17-17 Northwestern = 16-16 Nebraska = 15-17 Man our conference would look so much better wouldn't it, because we'd be log jammed in the middle with all the other teams and the Big 10 would of gotten 6 teams in Penn St and Maryland would be locks. Man how dumb of us to win those ball games!

I really don't see any prospect out there who would put us in a better place in the foreseeable future. An extension would seem the only option at present so might as well do it now. I don't think we have an AD eager to make another flashy coach hire to burnish his own reputation.

Moos knows what to do. He'll give Miles his extension, and then Miles can go out and recruit on more even playing field. 4 years, 6 years, I don't know. I'd think it should be at least 4 years. If Miles can win the locker room this off season, and keep the core together, look out for the Huskers next year.

With all due respect to the guy i assume that highlight video shows the majority of the shots he's made in college as his limited playing time and limited shooting doesn't scream offensive contributor. Is he a lock down defender? Good locker room guy? Dube was mostly a disappointment on the court here but I'd buy into his presence off the court and in the locker room contributing to our success this year.

  33. If the quadrants used average of the 6 metrics instead of asinine RPI, here is how our quadrants would change. Nebraska good Penn St. A q1 instead of q2 loss St. Johns q1 instead of q2 loss Penn St H q2 instead of q3 win NW q2 win instead of q3 win Minny A q2 win instead of q3 win Minny H q3 win instead of q4 win Illinois A q2 loss instead of q3 loss Illinois H q3 win instead of q4 win Rutgers H Q3 win instead of q4 win bad long beach q4 win instead of q3 win We also would be extremely close to having a q1 road win at Wisconsin. They are 77th in average of the metrics so possible that could still slide to a q1 win. It is criminal how bad the Big 10 is deflated in this ridiculous RPI.

A little more info (from Game Notes @ Huskers.com) _______________________________________________________________ HUSKERS SIGN SECOND STRAIGHT TOP 20 CLASS • Nebraska received National Letters of Intent from four standout high school seniors from Iowa, Minnesota and Indiana on the first day of the early signing period on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017. • Nebraska’s recruiting class was ranked No. 20 in the nation by the ESPN rankings at the start of the early signing period. I got my NIT tickets. If that's where we end up I'll be caring about it and attending. I hope the players rally and play hard. The NIT is a lot like the minor bowl games. It is obvious some teams are disappointed and don't give maximum effort. I think if we get a home game we'll be OK. I'm not judging the season by yesterday. 22 wins and 4th in the Big 10 is satisfying. We played some exciting basketball. Easy team to support as they seem like a bunch of good guys. TP had a magical season and returned. He followed it up with a less impressive season and disappointing team effort. He then declared. AWIII was on an awful team, knew he was going to be asked to do more than he was comfortable with so he bailed. Morrow and Jacobsen knew what was coming with Palmer and Copeland and didn't want to be relegated to sharing minutes with each other and Jordy at the 5. Everyone else who has left has essentially be non-factors that we all thought had "potential." (Walt P was a very odd situation, don't see anyone like that on this team) Frankly I don't see any of these applying to Palmer or Copeland. We didn't see major defections coming off the '14 run and I don't think we will after this season. Might we lose a Palmer or Tshimanga? Very possible. Maybe a seemingly random Allen or Akenten type defection? Very possible. I just don't see a scenario where we have a massive jumping of ship.
