  1. We get the home-road sweep of both Minnesota AND Wisconsin. How many of us thought THAT would happen at the start of the season?

  2. Just a little perspective before we all go back to hitting refresh at Bracket Matrix every 5 minutes, because sometimes it can be tough to enjoy the ride when you’re a bubble team. And we still have at least 6 games to go – this team is doing some special things ... with more to come. In the past 20 years… MOST WINS 20 – 07-08 20 – 98-99 19 – 13-14 19 – 10-11 19 – 05-06 18 – 17-18 18 – 08-09 18 – 03-04 MOST CONF WINS (regular season) 11 – 13-14 10 – 98-99 9 – 17-18 8 – 08-09 7 – (5 times) (Only have hit double digits in conf wins 6 times since winning 13 in the MVC in 24-25 - I think Lunardi had us in the last 4 out that year, what a jerk) (Modern record is 12 conf wins in 65-66) HIGHEST CONF FINISH 4th – (9-4) – 17-18 4th – (11-7) – 13-14 5th – (10-6) – 98-99 6th – (7-9) – 05-06 7th – (7-9) – 10-11 7th – (7-9) – 07-08 7th – (6-10) – 06-07 7th – (6-10) – 01-02 7th – (7-9) – 00-01 MOST CONF ROAD WINS 4 – 17-18 4 – 98-99 3 – 16-17 3 – 15-16 3 – 13-14 3 – 08-09 3 – 05-06 3 – 04-05 3 – 00-01 (I went back a ways & can't find another season with more than 4 conference road wins - 90-91 won 8 true road games, but only 3 in conference - of course we only played 7 conference road games for a long time in the past) FEWEST LOSSES 8 – 17-18 13 – (6 times) (Only 4 times since 78-79 have we lost 10 or fewer games) SCORING AVERAGE 74.0 – 17-18 72.2 – 15-16 71.1 – 00-01 70.5 – 03-04 69.8 – 01-02 (Highest scoring average since 95-96) 90+ POINT GAMES 4 – 17-18 3 – 15-16 3 – 04-05 2 – 09-10 2 – 05-06 2 – 98-99 (Most since 95-96 - tough to catch that team's 10 games at 90+) Enjoy what the team has accomplished for a few minutes. Then back to worrying about the bubble, whether Joe Lunardi will give us some respect, and whether Northwestern & Michigan can sneak into Tier 1.

  3. Throughout the Minnesota game I kept having déjà vu. My mind went back to countless moments (during the Collier and Sadler eras in particular) when our under-manned, out-talented team would try to scratch and claw its way to a victory over a vastly more talented opponent. I remember being exasperated in the bleachers at the Devaney, wondering how we were the only team that seemed to never be able to buy a call at home. I’ve seen that game in person no less than 50 times. But now I’ve finally seen it from the other side—through the lens of a fan of the talented road team. As the can’t-catch-a-break home team fan, that game feels like highway robbery. I’m sure the Gopher faithful left that game thinking the game was called unfairly (and at home no less!). Many of them likely uttered some variation of “Man, if only the calls went both ways, we totally would have won.” But as a fan of the athletic and talented road team, watching from the comfort of my couch, I finally have come to appreciate just how tough it is to officiate that game fairly. Because the reality is you can’t “call it both ways.” Why? Because the teams aren’t committing the same types of fouls. Our team was quicker. More explosive. Proactive. And when there was contact, it was usually because our guys had put themselves in position to make a play and they did. The result is that the refs didn’t blow their whistle on anticipation fouls. Or in other words, they assumed our guys were athletic enough to make a clean play on the ball, unless their eyes told them otherwise. A perfect example of this is when Copeland went straight up to misdirect the final shot of the game, the Gopher guard jumped into him and crashed hard to the ground, and the fans went bananas on the no-call. The Gopher players, on the other hand, were largely reactionary. They were a step behind. Not as quick. That makes it much easier for a ref to anticipate contact and know that the defender is going to be late, and the contact worthy of a foul. And generally speaking they were right. The Roby fastbreak foul (when Pitino got his technical) was a microcosm of how the entire game was officiated. On that play a Gopher defender clearly clipped Roby’s arm. It was a foul, no question. But as a Gopher fan all you see is a bang-bang play that got called against your team. The reality is that the Gopher defender was just a little too slow, and Roby just a little too quick, for the steal to be made cleanly. I finally get it. I now know why that game can’t be called evenly. As a ref you either call fouls on contact equally (which favors the slow home team), or you call fouls only on clear infractions (which favors the athletic road team). There is no way of officiating that game that “calls it both ways.” Sorry refs for all the mean things I’ve called you through the years. And thanks for getting the game right last night.

  5. Thoughts during the game. A bit of a stream of consciousness effort today. Pregame: Michigan lost. Grrrrr…. No Amir Coffey. Hopefully that’s a break NU can take advantage of. 1st Half: That was the exact start I was afraid of. Not sure what Watson was doing on that first possession. He got a wide open look and just biffed it. Minnesota came out on fire, which I was a little worried about. I liked the time out and response, though. A nice 11-2 run to respond was really encouraging. Copeland was running the floor really hard. Loved seeing that. Washington is gonna be a good player. It’s fun when we hit from 3. Jordy just can’t handle the ball. At all. Through the under 8 timeout, NU looks like the fresher team. And they’re playing with the urgency that a team on the bubble should play with. Huskers went on a 37-15 run after falling behind 7-0 to start the game. Roby got another #mansizedrebound according to Mr. Bardo. Palmer takes it to the hole like Lance Jeter used to do. I love watching Thomas Allen shoot the basketball. That 3 by Watson with about 30 seconds left was the worst shot we took in the half. Of course Washington hit that 3 at the end of the half… All-in-all, I’ll take that half, but that wasn’t a great end to it. If NU keeps playing hard in the 2nd, they’ll be fine. 2nd Half: The break seems to have done Gill some good. Minnesota came out of the gates attacking. We’ll see if they can maintain it. I’m skeptical. The Watson to Roby lob was a work of art! JPJ was short on a few free throws tonight. Didn’t really expect that. The bulk of that run by Minnesota to get back in the game was with Watson, JPJ and Cope on the bench. Foul trouble for JPJ is problematic. I like how Roby attacks after grabbing the rebound. The Pitino technical foul killed all their momentum. NU went on a lightning quick 6 point spurt after that. Evidently Pavelka called Pitino a “jack wagon” on the broadcast. lol We had some timely offensive rebounds. Taylor hit a couple of clutch shots, too. I don’t know how Washington hit that shot around Roby. Circus. If he can find an outside shot, he’ll be impossible to guard. He almost is already. I know they shot the ball fairly well, but 21 attempts from 3 is too many. WOW! What a fortunate shot from Taylor on that broken possession. Huge play! Roby with all the dunks! They’re breaking the press a lot better now than they did in November. NU had an answer for every Gopher challenge. Really impressive, actually. To get 93 with the foul trouble JPJ was fighting is pretty impressive.

  6. Jordy played well again. 6 points and 6 boards in 11 minutes. If we can continue to get that sort of production out of him that will be huge.

  8. Minnesota had two guys who could really score the ball and very hard for us to stop. But that's it. We had very balanced scoring and were really good in transition (for the most part.) Point being we were pushing the ball in transition and being aggressive. Got a little worried when they tied it up late, but then we go on a 6 or 8 point run to basically put the game away. Held them at arms length from there even with Mason hitting a couple of very late treys. Very satisfying win. I remember all those years we couldn't buy a road win in conference. Now, we're looking at 4 conference road wins with the possibility of a 5th at Illinois. I'm ready to believe. Anyone else?

  12. Mannnn. We get it dude. It seems like a lot of your posts are just to tell people why Nebraska WONT get in. Take a second and just enjoy the win. Join in the fun of saying we will get in. Take a big drink of this red beverage we’re all passing around. Then if we don’t make it in the end, you can tell us why.

  13. Oh...and also...with this win we have OFFICIALLY ended Wisconsin's run of finishing in the top 4 of the B1G, no combination of wins and losses will push them past us in the standings (well, I mean I guess *technically* they could still tie us for 4th but we got the tiebreak on 'em). Feels good, man!

  16. I liked the pace we played at. Had about 6 possessions we were out of control and I think Watson was the culprit on half of them with decision making/shot selection. Of course if thosengonin we are singing his praises. Thought he played well. He is so good with dribble drive in the paint if we aren’t standing around watching he creates so well for others. Think we we got a little gunshy doubling Murphy after they swung it and hit the corner 3. Keep mixing it up is our best bet when we have smaller ‘bigs’ on the floor. Minnesota shot well. I thought we were pretty engaged defensively. They made a lot of shots with a hand in their face. When we were 8/11 at half (or whatever it was) I didint think we would shoot 72% from 3 again in he second so I was a little worried going into the half with the way they closed it. To be fair I didn’t think Mason would keep going Steph Curry on us in the second half. What a costly T by ‘Jackwagon’ and then whatever we ran to get Mason switched into Roby in the post for a bunny was simply awesome. Evan Taylor is my favorite Husker on this team. Don’t get me wrong, I hoop and holler when our playmakers make plays. Evan is about the 7th guy I want taking shots. He has about one WTF moment every game but he is just a great defender and team guy. I think a lot of it is being a senior and his ‘give a s**t’ barometer is higher than most on the team. Hope he sees more minutes in critical minutes or the offensive weapons that are playing more minutes start to model their games after him because he does a lot of glue guy stuff that isn’t noticed in the box score but goes a LONG WAYS into winning games. He can score 0 points and I like what he brings us. When he has a super efficient offensive game like tonight I just grin ear to ear because it is unexpected but at the same time he is giving us the juice we need.

  18. We now know that Anton Gill and Evan Taylor give good interviews. We've had an opportunity to hear them both on the radio in the last couple games. 1. Anton Gill: During last night's post-game, I started listening to a player-interview but did not catch who was talking. During the interview, I was impressed with the quality of analysis and responses and wondered who might be talking. Anton Gill is the answer. Would like to hear more from him! 2. Evan Taylor. When Evan Taylor's interview ended after the Wisconsin game, Kent Pavelka suggested that he take up broadcasting. Then, after last night's game, I heard this reported: (i) during a BTN interview of Evan Taylor, the interviewer asked if Evan was surprised at Roby's performance; (ii) Evan promptly turned to Isaiah and asked if Isaiah was surprised by his own performance; (iii) Isaiah said, "No"; (iv) then Evan turned to the mircophone and said that he wasn't surprised either, since Isaiah always played that way in practice, and what we saw last night is merely more of the same. Now . . . that's a clever way to respond!

  21. First of all, be careful. Jayskers frequent this board. You might have to explain to them (and our fans) what "Sweet 16" means. Secondly, this year's team seems very different than the 2013-2014 squad. I'm much more confident in this team to be competitive if they make it to the tournament and not just rely on getting hot at the end of the season. We've seen it over and over again this season where our team has defied our predispositions about how prior teams have played (fighting through scoring droughts, overcoming large deficits, winning on the road, minimizing losing streaks, covering their teammates when they aren't scoring, etc.). This team is bought in.

  28. Well, they might not make the tournament, which would make this pretty difficult.

  29. Ideal situation: Huskers win out, pull an upset at MSG and walk away as tournament champs. Get assigned to the Wichita site and have 2 more home games because Husker fans travel. End up playing Creighton in the Round of 32 and beat them to go to the Sweet 16.

  30. Great Post. I don't think Miles or the players, get enough credit for their demeanor. I know it's easier when things are going well, but how embarrassing (or great) was it to see the Minnesota players/coach act last night when adversity hit? I know Miles has had his moments were he gets a little chippy, but, as of late, the mindset between the ears of the staff and players is in a great great spot. One of my favorite quotes is, "Living in their heads rent free". I think our athleticism, defense, and great team basketball (people need to stop knocking Glynn BTW. He's running the show) , but, most importantly our mindset, confidence and demeanor has been spot on. We're starting to "live rent free" in a lot of the B1G's heads. Oh, did I mention our athleticism?

  31. Murphy got away with two pretty obvious hooks one of which lead to a no call on the play the pitino got the T. I’d like to see roby learn how to take the flop charge when he’s getting backed down that we saw so often called on jordy earlier in the year. really disagree w your take on Taylor too. His off the bounce pull up game is probably the best on the team and his three point shooting although a small sample size is currently sitting at 50%. Id argue he should be shooting more of the catch n shoot type shots that he normally makes the extra pass on. ( I don’t know much about Taylor before he got to Nebraska but in my mind the strides he’s shown in two years can be attributed to the coaching staff )

  32. If we end up playing Minnesota in the tournament I will have a page that is nothing but a button with a picture of Pitino that plays "jackwagon" when you press it. Otherwise I think we don't want the Gophers to fire this guy for a while.
    3 points
  33. Yeah, our defense didn't travel tonight as the saying goes. Forced very few turnovers. We went 1-3-1 for what, one possession? Thought that could have helped keep easy entry passes to Murphy in check since he was just taking it to us in there. At least made them figure out another way to get it in there. Anyway, we kept it in our pocket. Glad the shots were falling. Shooting over 50% with the guy taking the most shots going 4/14? I'll take it! It was a fun game to be at. I let out a couple "wooooos" on Roby's dunks and the Minnesota fans around disliked the number of times I had the opportunity and began mocking me by doing it whenever Minnesota did something. I had a good laugh about that, then did it again the next time he dunked.

  34. I wouldn't call 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 9 assists an off night. He doesn't get in foul trouble he has a puncher's chance at school's 1st triple double.
    3 points
  35. He did some good things. Having 3 or 4 TO was not good. They are huge momentum killers. He just needs to eat minutes, do what he is supposed to do on defense, and any production is a plus. I would call his night a wash. Stop turning the ball over.

  36. Offense = Sharp Defense = Inconsistent - closer to bad then good Roby = Rock star Remainder of the team on offense = Very, very solid. Hey, win and move on. Heck, I don't even know who we play next...seriously. Can't worry about two games in advance. Can't worry about the tournament (either the Big Ten or NCAA). We just need to take care of business and win the game in front of us. If we continue to win each game...the rest will take care of itself. Others can start and respond to those concerns. I will simply worry about the game in front of us.
