Times Change I Guess
Hooper and 4 others reacted to Dean Smith for a topic
I didn't say anything about undisciplined basketball. I'm saying you can't control everything down to whether they want to wear the hood that is on the team provided warmup or not. Pretty much every team that is signed with Adidas has warm ups with hoods. They are certainly not mutually exclusive. If you think wearing a hood is undisciplined then there's not much more room for our discussion. You don't have to march around like little soldiers to have a disciplined basketball team. When players did things that were out of control they came and took a seat on the bench. Things do change and if you don't you get left behind. I think Bobby Knight was a basketball genius but you can't stay employed being Bobby Knight anymore and you certainly can't sign the type of players we need to be successful with his attitude and actions. And if it was Evan Taylor that that's exactly the kind of disciplined, team first players we need. He has no problem doing the dirty work. If discipline was all you needed to be successful than West Point and the Naval Academy would be playing for the final every year. North Carolina is disciplined or the will face the wrath of Roy but he is a good enough coach that has done his work in practice that he has enough trust in his players to allow them some individual creativity that makes the game fun to watch.5 points -

What’s with the expressions of bitterness on this board by fans of the school in Eastern Omaha toward the Huskers? Perhaps it’s because Nebrasketball is making progress. After all: —We have 9 wins by Christmas Day. —One of our losses is an away game against a top 5 team. —Two losses are to top 25 teams in away games—one of which could easily have gone the other way. —One loss is a one-pointer at home to Kansas. —We have only one other loss—and it’s not a bad one. —Players are progressing well, and the team is getting better quickly If the Huskers can stay healthy, this will be an excellent year!4 points -

That place was intimidating. There was barely room along the sidelines to throw in the ball and the noise had a raw sound to it. Probably the crappy acoustics or something, but while the PBA is loud, it also seems a duller sound. At the Coliseum, it was more like you could hear the individual voices. It's also possible my ears are shot from going to too many metal concerts. IDK what to make of this thread, but it it's always great to go down memory lane.3 points -
I’m split on this thinking. I didn’t want to say it because a few posts have been pretty decent posts. But bashing very very minuscule things was like why? Then I got happy and giddy. We’re 13 games into the year... having played two of our toughest conference opponents... and we can’t find anything better to complain about than warmups. That’s a positive in my book! Keep it going boys! I can’t wait until we start complaing about which way someone’s leg bends.3 points

Thanks for posting, Grandpapa. Sorry to hear of your unhappiness with what you saw. And here’s my take as a Grandpa, who has gone to a game or two with my Granddaughter (I've been attending Nebrasketball games most years since 1977): —The three point line is a huge blessing. My old long shots only counted for two (and “long shots” had a double meaning). —I love the Vault. Wouldn’t want to go back to the Devany for anything. —Thank God for the shot clock. The old Iba days of passing forever to feed Smith in the post for a layup (I don’t remember many dunks) are, happily, gone. —College players seem much more athletic and play more physically these days, from what I remember in the past. —I love the chairs for this old fanny and back. Now . . . if the Huskers can keep it going this year, I’ll be one happy Grandpa!!3 points

Right you are regarding KenPom. Like Jacob Marley, we wear the chain we forged in our earlier life. However, we're 102 in TeamRankings, 84 in Massey and 94 in T-Rank. I'm going to trust my eyes instead of numbers, I think we're better than that.2 points -

I suspect you don't have to tell 8th grade girls not to dunk in warmups. But maybe that's the psychology of a great coach. Tell 8th grade girls who couldn't dunk anyway that they're not allowed to dunk and they'll begin to believe they can do things beyond their actual ability. Sort of reverse psychology. Stuff you'd probably know if you ever coached championship level 8th grade girls. Which I haven't.2 points -

I'm pretty sure Coach Mac has no problem with a player having his hood up in warmups. Huge Bob Knight fan when it comes to his concepts but he nor anyone else could be successful today with his methods. I've been involved with some very successful basketball coaches. I would way more successful than you regardless of who you are because they were the most successful in Nebraska history. They taught fundamentals, had very disciplined teams and could give a rat's ass about who's warmup hood was up.2 points -

By the way, in all seriousness, when did you get to the Vault? If you get there early, you would see the actual warm-ups where the assistant coaches are on the floor with the players and they go through drills and half-court sets. They then go back into the locker rooms and come out for the "more relaxed" "staying loose" process. They are basically in and out of the locker rooms 3 times prior to game time.1 point -

Hahaha...there is one thing I would like back from the BOB, the popcorn what the heck, I would like to have all of the concessions for that matter. Other than that, I am glad the BOB is a thing of the past (except for Volleyball and the Olympic sports.) If you really want old school back, we could bring back the venue that I attended my first year at UNL...the Coliseum. Man, we could make the floor quake when we were jumping on the bleachers.1 point -

I'm not quite convinced of that. With the Big Ten being what it is this year, there aren't really any wins available like we had at MSU, for instance or even at home vs. Wisconsin. I think that means we need an extra win or two since we missed our chances at them in the non-con. If they take care of business, we'll get a pretty clear idea of how much needs to be done down the stretch as the bracketologists fill us in on everything.1 point -

We are getting better, and learning how to work and get tougher. It's a process. The coaches are establishing their culture of toughness, and the older kids are all trying to set good examples and the young kids are watching and following. The chemistry is very good. They like playing with each other and enjoy each other's success. . We are going to have good stretches and tough stretches still but the bottom got put in last year. Like I said 6 weeks ago enjoy the climb back up. We are going the right direction. Hop on the train. Just remember there will still be aome bumps along the way. That's natural1 point -

While the B1G has been a bit disappointing this year in the sense that there's really only one elite team, there's quality depth throughout. That means that just about every conference win is a top 100 win, and you take away the chance of a "bad loss" (loss to a team outside the top 100). For that reason I don't think SOS is going to plummet as others fear. Might not be as big of a strength as in years past, but it certainly won't be a weakness on Selection Sunday. Keep in mind that 12-6 last year was good enough to share second place in the conference. 11-7 was fourth place outright, and 10-8 was a four-way tie for fifth place. There will absolutely be more than four or five B1G teams that make the Dance, so setting the bar at 12-6 seems too high. 11-7 should get us comfortably in the tournament, and 10-8 at least gets us in the conversation. 9-9 is probably not enough.1 point
