Taylor thus far has played the 1, 2, 3, and 4. He's being considered for ELMER'S™ GLUE GUY OF THE YEAR award.

It also is important to note that we are a newly formed team with a lot of new parts. Many thought that if we were going to improve, it may take time to do so. While that may still be true, it appears to my humble eye that the new parts seem to work well with the parts that we had. I know, I know, the regular season is still a couple of weeks away, and I know, real games bring different challenges, and I know, I have rose colored glasses; but dang, it sure is nice that the first two scrimmages provide good mojo. Think about how the basketball fans of Mississippi State are feeling...just saying!

Wow - look at Taylor's numbers in 2 games: 15 pts, 6 reb, 9 assists, 0 turnovers in 57 minutes, plus the defense he gives you Isn't the old adage that JuCo guys tend to really make a jump from year 1 to year 2? If so, he would seem to fit the bill (even though he's not a typical JuCo kid, having only played 1 year there).

  7. Thor didn't play. That was a scorekeepers mistake. And, by the way, in case anyone wondered, this was a legit matchup where both teams were trying to win. I know sometimes we wonder if the closed door scrimmage results really translate because if they were just testing out various lineups, the final score might not be indicative of how actually good the two teams are. Apparently, in this game, the teams were giving each other their best shots and we were ... better. ISU is very athletic, very good shooters, and we beat them with them having basically a pretty good game. That's pretty encouraging. And, Jacob, from what I understand, there's no "may not have" about it. Roby threw down a dunk for the ages. Wish there was video.

  8. Cain's stats were very good for only 11 min played......4 blocked shoots, and 8 rebounds. Excellent for a first time on the floor freshman. Good indication she'll be a big help inside. Hannah has certainly continued her upward curve. Taylor is going to play a lot. She must be progressing real well in practice to play as much as she did today. The overall teams shooting percentages are a concern.....but it's very early. But a good start for the season...Iowa State is a decent team. Things are looking up folks.

    Today's WBB scrimmage

You are right about those two shooting the 3's. I don't think it will be important for the 5 position to score from long range. Plenty of others will. Free throws are a different story. Darrien has not been good at the charity stripe in her past years here. Not having Janay or Nicea for this scrimmage hurts our defense as they are probably our two best defenders. Look for forward to seeing them on the floor.

    Today's WBB scrimmage

I wouldn't worry about our power forwards ability to hit the 3. Both Maddie and Grace have the ability as shown in the past. Kate Cain hit 80% of her free throws last year. First game jitters for a freshman are normal. On the positive Kate's 4 blocked shots in 11 minutes puts Shepards last season total of 7 for 29 games in perspective when looking at hustle on defense.

Saying Iowa State is a bad team bc they are picked next to last in their conference ignores the fact that the Big 12 is suppose to be extremely good and deep this year.

  12. -James Palmer scored 23 points and only one made 3 pointer. If he can keep scoring without having to rely on a 3 pointer that will be huge. Everyone has games where they don't shoot well. -Jordy with 14 min, Duby and tanner with 7 each. This means we played 12 minutes without a true 5 on the court. -IIRC Iowa State is like #34 preseason KenPom; they probably will be a decent team this year, despite any preseason rankings. -Thor played before Nana, not sure if it was at the end of the game or not. Also I believe playing in an exhibition does not rule out a player from Redshirting. But I'm not saying he will. -It looks like we have 2 guys who can consistently score this year, with a number of other guys who have an opportunity to step in and produce in games every once in awhile, today that was Jack. This looks like a team that should be able to find enough guys to put the ball in the hoop. -Overall I'm happy with another win, the regular season can't come soon enough

Mississippi State and Iowa State may not be great, but we are also trying to put a lot of new pieces together early in the season. The thing I like about the Husker winning both of these games is that Copeland hasn't shot well in either game. Now, he's a streaky player in general, so when he's on, he will be good and when he's not, hopefully he can do other things to help the team. What I'm hopeful for this season is that when maybe 1 or 2 of the top guys isn't playing well we have some depth off the bench that can come in and maybe be that spark we need (McVeigh yesterday by box score may have been that guy). Sometimes guys like McVeigh can be better off the bench. Come in and look to hit open 3's. Be that spark plug off the bench. I just think this team is going to get better and better as the year goes on. Tough thing is we have a brutal schedule this year, so how do these guys handle adversity when it happens?

  20. Not much scoring from the big guys, but 8 reb combined Palmer knows how to get to the FT line Typical Glynn game Taylor had the most minutes & 6 assists Another good stat filler game from Roby Jack McTrey had a big game! 17 pts in 16 min - perfect from 3 Good to see Allen get more minutes & make them productive today. Quick box score summary: Palmer------23 pts, 4 reb, 25 min (10/11 FT) Watson------19 pts, 2 reb, 28 min (3 A) (5 PF) (3-5 3-PT) McVeigh-----17 pts, 3 reb, 16 min (4-4 3-PT) Allen------- 7 pts, 0 reb, 16 min (2 A) (0-0 3 PT) Copeland---- 7 pts, 4 reb, 24 min Taylor------ 6 pts, 3 reb, 29 min (6 A) Roby-------- 6 pts, 3 reb, 20 min (2 STL) Gill-------- 5 pts, 0 reb, 14 min Tshimanga--- 2 pts, 2 reb, 14 min (4 PF) Borchardt--- 0 pts, 2 reb, 7 min Okeke------- 0 pts, 4 reb, 7 min (1 PF) Thor-------- 0+ min Other stats NU won rebounding 30-23 NU 13 turnovers, ISU 15 NU 10-19 from 3 pt, ISU 8-15 NU 51.8% FG, ISU 58.8% NU 24-29 FT, ISU 16-22 NU 14 Assists on 29 FG ISU had only 3 offensive rebounds NU had 13 second chance pts to 2 for ISU Looks like game was played with 6 PF before DQ - or we just let ISU players have 6 PF since they only used 8 players

I cannot imagine our rotation being limited to 8 players this year. Which two among the following are you going to keep off the floor in order to limit the rotation to 8? Thomas Allen? Jack McVeigh? Isaiah Roby? Anton Gill? Duby Okeke/Tanner Borchardt? I'd suggest AT LEAST 4 of the above 6 are going to see regular minutes in addition to the 5 starters. And as I look at the roster, I think we're really going to have to hit the transfer market hard this next off-season. Palmer and Copeland having good seasons would really boost our appeal in that regard.

I don't remember ever taking an ACT test before college. Could that be right? I did take something called an SAT. I think our dog might have eaten my score. Or maybe it got lost among all those old homework papers of Roburt Sallie that are blowing around somewhere.

We scored 90+ points last year and needed double OT to do so vs Iowa. We have scored 90+ five times in the Miles Era. Iowa St plays fast and probably didn't play much D in this one but it's not like we've been racking up 90+ scores vs the teams we pay to bring in here every year. Seems like this team might have a bit more firepower. Are we planning to use it?

  30. Imma let you finish, Jacob, but first - Yes, Palmer has the size and strength to cause Khyri some issues. HOWEVER, it's important to remember that KT is one of the best defenders in the country - everyone has problems with him. So I won't consider it a huge advantage gained by CU if Khyri was able to hold him below his averages (or whatever), because that's expected.

Scoring is important, but certainly not the only aspect of being an effective basketball player. Maybe Copeland will be a "glue" guy for us? Who cares, as long as our team wins.

According to Kenpom, the projected last place team is Okie State, pre-season #50. ISU is pre-season #34.

  34. Iowa State lost its top 4 scorers. There were only 4 guys from last year's squad who played in the scrimmage, three of which were actually rotation players. They added a pair of 4-star recruits in Wiggington and Lewis a transfer who shot under 40% at UTSA last year in Beverly. Lard was a fringe top-150 recruit who redshirted last year. That's everyone who played in the scrimmage. Iowa State has some pieces, but I think it would be safe to project a down year compared to where they've been, and the squad that played against Nebraska wasn't even full strength. KenPom is going to be generous this time of year because of how good the team was last year.

Article from Des Moines Register from back in July: "The Iowa State men’s basketball team is giving Zoran Talley another chance to play collegiate basketball. And Talley is giving the Cyclones some experience and immediate help. Iowa State announced the addition of Talley, a graduate transfer from Old Dominion, on Thursday. The 6-foot-7 forward is eligible to play immediately. He was booted from the Old Dominion basketball team in April, but is scheduled to graduate in August." Looks like he already graduated.

Agreed - it's just going to take time, so can't put too much emphasis on what they're doing stat wise for a while. Every game rep is valuable, more so than the numbers they're putting up. And if the extra scrimmage helps them to feel fully ready even just a little sooner, say Dec. 9 instead of Dec. 16, I'm all for it.

From Huskers.com article Has to build some confidence for Allen to cap a big rally and give the team the lead for good. Nice that he feels confident enough to take a shot/make an offensive play like that at a big moment - good sign. Also will be a good lesson for the guys to know they can rally from a deficit like this. They've played well in the 2 games, but also had some adversity, yet received a confidence boost from winning both of them. Honestly, I'm not sure the 2 games could have scripted out any better. -- Looking at stats, Copeland & Gill are definitely shaking off some rust - which is no surprise considering all the rehab work both of them have been doing the past several months. Nice to have that extra scrimmage vs a Power-5 team to help them acclimate a bit more quickly than they otherwise may have. Team will be pretty salty once those guys get to feeling good and are into the flow too.

Interesting Tanner is getting as much time as Duby. I'm sure there minutes will change once they give Jordy a total green light, but good for Tanner, it's nice to see his handwork paying off. Another guy Iowa St. didn't use today was grad transfer Hans Brase. Brase visited Nebraska the same week as Duby and he's coming off a couple injury riddled seasons. I'm wondering if they aren't willing to risk it this early. Still Iowa St. is no scrub. I think we're all ready for this season to get here. Stay tuned!!!
