    Bellwether games

I move we appoint Norm to be the official HHC Bellwether. The difficult part will be getting him to agree about the neutering thing.

    Guard play

He won’t get the open looks like MJ because people will actually have to guard him, which means they won’t be able to sag off and help guard other players, which means other players will be more productive. Having Isaac Copeland on the floor will make other players better.

  7. A wether is a neutered male sheep. In the old days, shepherds would tie a bell around the neck of a wether and run them with the flock and, wherever you heard the bell going, that's where the flock was headed. The bellwether came to signify an indicator of a trend or a predictor of a direction of something. We've speculated a lot about how good we could be this year. Playing Eastern Illinois or North Texas really isn't going to tell us much about the kind of club we have. But, I think there are some bellwether games that could really give us an early indication of how good this team might or might not be. @ St. John's 11/16. St. John's is an intriguing team. Like us, they come off a disappointing 19 loss season. They return their top 3 scorers, though, 3 guards who each scored double figures a year ago, lead by Shamorie Ponds at 17 1/2 ppg, followed closely by Marcus Lovett at 16 ppg. Both of those two were freshmen last year. To that, they've added 5-star guard and Arizona transfer Justin Simon, who it sounds like has assimilated into their program pretty well, and they've also added Marvin Clark, a 6'7' power forward transfer from Michigan State, a powerful player who has 3-point range. They won't match us in size. Their biggest, tallest starter is likely to be Clark at 6'7" and 230#. So, expect a team that will play small ball and launch a lot of treys. They were 36.4% as a team from long range last year on 763 attempts. For comparison purposes, we connected on 32% of our 560 attempts. With the players they brought back and the players they added, I think St. John's is going to be a lot better team than they were a year ago. Question is whether they can play together. That's a lot of guys who are going to be calling for the ball. We play them at their house in our third real game of the season. If we lose, it won't necessarily mean we're bad, because, like I said, I expect St. John's to be a quality team this year. They have some really good players. On the other hand, if we win ... UCF 11/23 (Advocare Tourney) This team is frickin huge, starting with 7'6", 300# center Takko Fall. He put up good numbers last year as a sophomore (11 pts, 9 1/2 bds in 23 min) and is joined in the front court by returning starter AJ Davis, a 6'9" Tennessee transfer who grabbed 7 bds and 8 1/2 points in 32 1/2 min a year ago. So, those two guys alone accounted for more than 16 rebounds/game last season. And they have their own version of Duby Okeke in Chad Brown, a 6'9" 240# forward who chipped in 4 1/2 and 3 1/2 in limited minutes a year ago. In the back court, they have an all-around potent scorer in BJ Taylor, who lead them in scoring last year at 17 1/2 ppg. And they grabbed a few transfers who will be eligible: Aubrey Dawkins, a 6'6" transfer from Michigan, who'll probably jump right into the starting lineup; Terrell Allen, a 6'3" sophomore who averaged 10 ppg his freshman year at Drexel; and Dayon Griffin, a junior who started 29 of 33 games as a sophomore at La Tech while scoring 11 1/2 ppg. UCF made it to the semis of the NIT last season and returns the bulk of their scoring and rebounding. They brought in some guards to buttress their backcourt and provide some additional scoring punch. And Kenpom ranks them a pre-season #68 team. This is a team we should probably lose to on a neutral floor. But, there's a reason they play the games. And if we happen to pull off a W, there's going to be some legit reason to believe we're a legit team. Minnesota 12/5 This is our first home contest against a top 150 team (Kenpom pre-season #37) and our 11th game overall. Minnesota is a conference opponent so we're all familiar with who they are and what they have so I won't go into detail on them. This game is in the middle of a very tough 5-game stretch after we get back from Orlando. One-third of the way into the season, though, this game should be a good barometer of the kind of team we might have. Minnesota is good. Extremely good. Kenpom didn't stick them in at #38 for no reason. But it's at our house. That gives us a chance to make up some ground on the Gopher's apparent roster advantages. We'll most likely be coming off a loss two days earlier at Michigan State, and if we can score a W against the Gophers, I'm going to be feeling pretty good regardless of the outcomes in the next two games after that (CU and KU.) To be honest, if we don't win any of the above three games, I will be a bit disappointed; however, we will be underdogs in all three contests, so the questions might be more about how well did we compete? and did we make it a contest in those games? If we win one of the above three, I'm going to feel pretty good. Those are all tough games that, on paper, we should lose. So, picking up a win in any of the three should be viewed as a major achievement and bolster our hopes for the rest of the schedule. Win two of them? I'll be ecstatic. Win all three and I'll be over the moon. Even if we win all three of the above, I'm sure we'll still have 2-3 losses under our belts (West Virginia, possibly Missouri, Michigan State) by the time we head to Omaha, so we're in no risk of being ranked rolling into that game against Creighton. But it should tell us whether we have a competitive team that should legitimately be in the discussion for a trip to the NCAA tourney next March. Win any two of my three bellwether games, and I think we'll be able to start that kind of talk ... with a very straight face.

  11. Although I understand that "voting process" it doesn't mean I have to be a fan of it. I can articulate my position to those in charge verbally or in writing rather than walking out on a contest. I hear (mostly chuckles) from many fan bases who chastise me for the action of our fans. My response typically points to the fact that our fans still buy the tickets and show up to the start of each game. I then digress to the fact that the bathrooms have something wrong with them and fans simply have to leave to find a spot to relieve themselves...or something like that. The thing is, we are not separating ourselves from the bad fan bases by walking out on our team. We should be able to make our point without having to vacate the team when they need us the most. If we truly want to believe that we have the best fans out there, shouldn't we then support our team and coaches through thick and thin or until the administration makes the change.

  12. Sports fans on the Pacific Coast are really good at doing this. I suppose we're lucky to have a fanbase that at least shows up to the game in the first place.

  15. Here is my issue, and it is an issue with fans in general. So people are free to fire away at me at your leisure. A "fan" is an enthusiast, a devotee, an admirer a supporter, a lover, a follower, a disciple, a connoisseur and yes perhaps a zealot. You go to the games to relax, or to cheer or support your team. They win or are winning and the spirits are high and life is grand. They play bad or they are losing and you still are there to support and represent your team...wait, uhhh, no! Because you are a true fan...a diehard supporter of the team, the city or university you get angry, embarrassed or whatever, and you get up in a huff and walk out. So that is the definition of a "fan." I guess I am confused, I am the strange one for sticking it out and supporting the team to the bitter end; good, bad or ugly. And oh yes, Saturday was both bad and ugly. Perhaps the moniker of the "greatest fans" is correct for good ol Nebraska, because the greatest fans in college football got up and walked out on the team...again! Why, I guess many fans wanted to show someone how upset they are. Really...because again, that is what a "fan" of a team and a program does.

  17. Agreed - I think we'll still get the Kansas-Kentucky type games, as ESPN will pay for them for some December programming. But NU-Cincinnati type H/H series are all but gone, which is unfortunate. Or you'll have to have a couple years in a row where you stop playing in the in-season tournaments, which is also unfortunate. I imagine this could push the start of conference season to just before Xmas, rather than just before New Year's as it is now - (at least in seasons where we aren't moving the B1G tournament up a week ) - so that would add another 2 games with no students and listless arenas, which also would be unfortunate. Perhaps they'll stick to this year's model and play the first two conference games in early December so students will be there? That would be better than starting B1G play Dec. 20/21/22.

My gut tells me Glynn will be more consistent and have a great year. Last season, I think he really suffered from not having a big guy who was a serious pick-and-pop prospect. Without that option, every team hedged the crap out of our on-ball screen-and-rolls. They didn't respect Jacobsen or Morrow as a threat to step out and shoot. Glynn was often left with little or no room to operate and I think it took a toll on him as teams schemed to stop him. Hopefully, that won't be the case when Copeland is on the floor. From the hype, being able to knock down mid-range shots seems to be one of Copeland's biggest assets. One of my biggest frustrations last year was that we didn't seem to adjust to the on-ball hedge strategy. It probably would have been more effective to clear a side and let Glynn operate than to bring another defender into the mix and gum up the works. Hopefully Palmer, Allen, Jack and others will step it up and be spot up threats to keep people honest so Glynn can get some space.

  20. Mixed feelings on this - Completely understand the desire to play more conference games, especially with conference expansion. Not to mention TV partners want more high-end content - ie, conference games - instead of non-power 5 teams in the non-conference. Now we'll have 7 double-plays and 6 single-plays each year. They can really balance the conference schedule nicely now if they want - have 1 team designated as a rival that you double-play every year. Then with the other 12 teams, you can have 6 double-plays and 6 single-plays, switching them each year. So you'd play your 'rival' 8 times every four years, and everyone else 6 times every four years, which would be nice balance. Unfortunately, that's going to change the way non-con schedules will be put together. If we want 17 home games like we have this season, that means we need 7 home games out of the non-con. We're locked in to H/H with the Bluebirds. Throw in a 3-gm neutral site tourney and that leaves 8-9 games to get to the 30-31 max, and 6-7 of them would have to be at home, depending on whether the bluebird game is in Omaha or Lincoln. And that doesn't even figure in the BE/B1G challenge when we play in that or the B1G/ACC game. So you probably end up either giving up H/H series with teams like Kansas or giving up the 3-gm neutral site tourneys because we need X number of one-game series home games vs non-power 5 teams to get to 17 home games. Or you back off and go with 15-16 home games. which doesn't seem likely. Makes it really tough to schedule H/H series vs name schools, especially when we don't know for sure that we'll have any home games in the B1G/ACc and B1G/BE challenges until several months before the games are played.

    Row6Seat10 (read in)

All, I have some very bad news. Long time member @Row6Seat10 has passed. For those of you who did not know him in person (I didn't) his name was Brian Karnatz and he had been battling colon cancer for over a year now. Always positive and dutifully dedicated to the Huskers, you couldn't really tell from his posting other than it's been notably absent for the last month. When I first took over running this site, Brian WAS the women's section. He specifically was the reason I started posting previews for the women's team on the front page. Brian would have been 59 next Tuesday. His funeral will be on Thursday
