  1. That's an impossible question. I don't know. In general, I would not want to mandate any significant changes on Fred after only 2 seasons (year 1 is a lost season that was out of his control). I would want to talk with Fred at the end of the season. If he's good at his job (as I believe he is), he will be able to articulate both the problems faced this season and a plan going forward. If recruiting also remains strong, I would give him another year or two. I'm not a fan of everything I see on the court. I am not a Doc fan. I dislike that NU gives up a zillion wide-open 3 pointers every game. But if I'm honest with myself, it's easy to see in almost every game they don't quite have the athletes to compete yet. They kind of have to pack the paint because they can't defend the paint 1-on-1. Without knowing details, I am consistent in my belief Fred should get two more seasons to implement his system, recruit players to that system and coach the players within that system. Is there room within that statement for some modest changes? Probably. If it's true only 1 assistant coach is recruiting, maybe that should change. Maybe they should all recruit? I don't know. I don't know what is commonly done in most programs these days.

  2. If Fred stays, I don't think it flips as much as some think. I legitimately have no idea what Trev's going to do and I'm not going to make an argument one way or the other. If this incoming class fits together better and he can find a pg in the portal, you should know whether or not it'll be worth staying the course by the end of next season. I am intrigued by what is in that class and would like to see them play here, but if Trev thinks Fred's not the guy, that shouldn't factor into his decision.

  3. Sure they do. Their 2 best guards have to play like their 2 best guards. Thought Shelley got aggressive late, which was good.

  4. I'm not concerned about losing recruits. Based on Fred's body of work prior to Nebraska, I'm worried about losing someone who could become the most successful coach Nebraska has ever hired before even giving him a chance to succeed.

  5. I would actually agree here, and am pleasantly intrigued by Oleg. We've obviously been burned by these type of guys in the past - but I've seen him do some stuff in warm-ups that make me go hmmmmm.... (in a good way).

    OHIO STATE GAME DAY THREAD

I watched Mich St and Mich last night. Two things became quite obvious to me, First it's very very hard to win on the road in the big Ten. Experience is big but you also need to play really good defense especially in defending outside. 2nd Alexis two main competitors were both playing each other. Ekh from Mich St. played 38 minutes and didn't score until the 4th qtr when she hit 2 threes. She had 2 reb and 2 turnovers. The other was Phelia from Mich and she played 30 minutes and had 9 pts and 5 turnovers. Not having Brown cost Mich the game as her replacement Phelia played a poor game. In listening to the pathetic announcers they felt it was a tossup for Big Ten freshman of the Year between Alexis M. and the other two previously mentioned. One even picked Phelia stating that consistency was very important. No-one has been more consistent then Alexis. Glad they don't have a vote.

  8. The NE women's basketball game against Ohio State reflected the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good included Markowski scoring 23 pts and 15 rebounds; Shelley driving to the basket for a change and making 7 of 8 free throws; and team rebounds of 48 vs 34 for OS. The bad included 16 turnovers with several being bad NE passes. The ugly included only 14 made shots on 31 layups or near basket shots. Haiby continues to have shooting struggles with 7 points against Penn State; 6 against Maryland; and 2 free throws against OS. For the 20-21 season she led the team in scoring at 16.8 pts a game (10.2 ytd this year). Most of us remember her late in the game heroics of driving in and usually scoring plus getting free throws. Apparently, she is still dealing with her injured shoulder. As reflect previously, others such as Wiedner, Shelley, or Scoggin need to step up for short jump shots and drive ins to the basket to help compensate. Hopefully despite a quick turnaround, the team will excel against Illinois and if we have a good lead, rest some starters, and play other players!

It's a great roast and hard to find. Anyone interested can pm me for more info. I'm not trying to sell stuff here, just want to help out people who have suffered as much as me these last several decades.

  15. Nee's first team at Nebraska finished with 21 wins and a 3rd place finish in the NIT. His 2nd season, they won 14; the 3rd year they won 17. Fred Hoiberg's first three years should be so atrocious.

  16. And this is exactly why this is such an easy decision for me. I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in ever watching one more game of plodding, grind down the shot clock, boring basketball. The Barry Collier and Doc Sadler eras are periods of time I don't ever want to return to. In addition, the best players don't want to play like that. If talent is needed to compete in the Big 10 then Nebraska should play a brand of basketball the best recruits want to play. Arguably the most successful coach in Nebraska history, Danny Nee, has four pretty atrocious seasons until he turned it around dramatically in year 5. A majority of the fan base was calling for his head after year 4. Year 1 of Fred was, for me, a throw-away year. He had little time to recruit and none of those players were able to stick. So, basically, Fred has had 2 seasons. I'm sorry, but that's just not enough. I saw a significant jump in talent last season and another modest bump in talent this season. Yes, it hasn't yet shown up in wins and losses, but the talent is improving. And looking at this recruiting class, I am seeing another bump in talent. Fred easily gets 5 years for me. And more likely 6-7 years. And I'm pretty confident he will get Nebraska where we want to go if given the freedom to get them there. The last thing he needs is to be micromanaged.

  17. I am terribly disappointed in this year's season like everyone else. I attended the exhibition game with Colorado and had my expectations for the season go sky-high. Again, I am so disappointed in our lack of team play. We did not solve our problems with 'point guard play' and we did not solve our 'lack of rebounding' problems. However, I am a die-hard Nebraska basketball fan and I REFUSE to give up. All of you on this board that have given up, I understand. But please do not respond to his thread with hate, despair, anger, hopelessness, etc. I know everything you are going to say. I have been to all the games. I've already heard it. Please go to another thread if all you want is to 'bad mouth' me for trying to see some positives that we can build on. I want to see if there are any other 'hopeful' fans left that want to talk about our future in a positive way. (It is a 300 mile round trip for me to see games -- please don't question my loyalty -- my mental competence maybe -- but not my loyalty.) So, on the positive side -- I see our rebounding problems starting to improve. We will have better size with Eduardo Andre (6'10" sophomore), Blaise Keita (6'10" soph), and Oleg Kojenets (7'0" redshirt freshman) than we did this year. We also have Wilhelm Breidenbach (6'10" sophomore) that can play post or power forward. I like the recruiting class that we are bringing in -- one juco and three freshmen) Blaise Keita -- 6'10" and 240 lbs. -- top juco post -- 4-Star rating (Sophomore in eligibility) Denim Dawson -- 6'6" forward -- rated #185 in his class Jamarques Lawrence -- 6'3" guard -- rated #146 in his class Ramel Lloyd -- 6'5" guard -- rated #135 in his class I believe that you build a team by recruiting strong freshmen classes and have them develop over 4 years. This season, we had seven freshmen players on the roster (Eduardo Andre, Keon Edwards, and C.J. Wilcher were considered freshmen in eligibility due to covid). The true freshmen were Breidenbach, Byrce McGowen, Kojenets, and Quaran McPherson (6'3" redshirt guard). If Byrce McGowen leaves after his freshman year, we will have six sophomores and three freshmen on the roster next season. That is a good nucleus to develop and build on. I don't know if Keisei Tominaga, Lat Mayan, Trey McGowen, and Derrick Walker will return. I would like to see Bryce McGowen return for one more year but I doubt that will happen. If all players came back, we would be one over the scholarship limit at 14. Some will have to leave because WE MUST RECRUIT A POINT GUARD for next season and maybe one more perimeter shooter. (portal -- be good to us) So, starting next season, we will be playing a lot of young players that have a chance to develop and be competitive in the BIG 10. I like the size and depth of our post players (when was the last time we ever said that). I like C.J. Wilcher -- I thought he improved and gained confidence these last five or six games. I like Keon Edwards -- I expect him to be one of our better players when he is a junior and senior (I know, he hasn't shown much yet, but I believe that he has a great amount of potential. He didn't play his senior year in high school due to covid and it shows. He didn't have the confidence to assert himself on the court this year and seemed to defer to the older players. I think he has as much talent as anyone on the team and will show it with time.) I plan to purchase my tickets again next year and drive 300 miles to watch them play. I want to stay positive about Husker basketball. I want to be hopeful. I want these 9 sophomores and freshmen to be the building blocks for long successful runs to the NCAA tournament. Am I all alone out here or are there a few other 'die-hards' that have hope for the future?? Go Big Red!!

  18. My dad is the player in the top row, next to Coach Gus Fish. Most of the players were on the GI Bill after WWII. Coach Butterfield in the lower right later became father of one of the founders of Nelnet and I later met him at BDSC at a game he attended against OSU. He still remembered dad(who passed in 2009) missing a layup that would have beaten Marshall in the NAIA tourney game.

  19. I really like our future, I think we can be a team that finishes in the top 4 in following seasons. Of course that's my hope anyway. The young talent is there, esp. if the coaches develop them well. As for this year, the next game at Ill. of course needs to be a "put it together and get a W" in spite of the short turnover . We have the better talent to make that happen and expect that. Other than another short turnaround and game at home against 1st place IU, the schedule moving forward has very "winnable" games the rest of the way. I don't think an 11-7 or 10-8 conf. finish is out of the question. They have to seize that and make it happen, of course. Not ruling out a big upset on Valentine's day either. I always give these ladies a chance. GO BIG RED!!!

  22. Girls played hard tonight. We did lots of good things. Played together with lots of effort. ..... Just not quite enough consistency...and turnovers. We were way more competitive than in past years. Markowski 23 points, 15 rebounds with one hand tied behind her back. OSU is a good defensive team, and shoots pretty well overall., and is playing pretty well the last several games.

Both of his parents played professional basketball in China. His father, Shang Guchen, is 6-6 and his mother, Ma Min, is 6-0. Shang is majoring in economics at Nebraska.

  28. First of all we are probably going to win 5 of the last 6, finish 11-7 in the B10 and go on to the tournament. I think we will beat Indiana and blow one of the away games, actually, and that's a pretty damn good season. I agree about the D though, as all 5 starters are definitely more offensive minded than defensive minded players. There is no perimeter stopper or rim protector getting much time......Coley maybe? In Amy's 2nd year when we tied for 3rd at 11-5, 3 of the 5 starters were more defensive minded and 3 3pt shooters came off the bench to add some scoring.

  29. I agree Sam is playing at less than 100%. I think we have the team to beat them but outside of the 1st quarter we still look like a tired team. Too many turnovers and way too many missed in close baskets. Plus when you are tired the first thing to go is your legs and that leads to poor shooting and poor defense. Would like to see more time for both Kendall's. Wasn't the thought 9-9 or 10-8 would be a good finish in conference back when this season started? That sure looks like where we are headed. I tend to agree with Cazzie that we may not have tools to beat Indiana. Really think it has more to do with our staff than the players. Was texting during the game last night and my brother who watches them from time to time made the comment to me. He said Williams is not a top 4 conference coach. She may coach a team into a top 4 spot but most times feel like we will be someplace in the 5-8 range.

  32. Offense really isn't the problem. The iron is often unkind on the road. That's why defense travels so well. We held to their season average in pts. and shooting percentage. To win on the road you have to make opponents more uncomfortable on offense. We need to stop the soft defense and we are going to try to outscore you game plan. Seriously doubt we are going to out Iowa the other team and be successful. 70 pts. on the road should be an easy W.

  39. His parents: Oleg comes from a basketball family, as both parents played collegiately at UNC Wilmington. Aleh was a 6-foot-11 center who played in 114 games during his four-year career at the school and helped the program reach the NCAA Tournament as a senior in 2000. After college, he played professionally oversees for more than a decade. Jurgita, was a 6-foot-6 center who still ranks third in school record books in both blocks in a season (71, 1998-99) and career (122, 1997-2000). She also holds the school record with 10 blocked shots in a game at UNC Wilmington.

  40. I agree about Lat. But what are the other options? Wilhelm has been out all year. The only other option at PF is Wilcher, who is about 6'4". Combine Wilcher at 6'4 (and no vertical) with Walker at 6',7" (and no vertical), and ya all wonder why we struggle to rebound and defend.

    Only for the die hards

Anyone who still cares enough to post on this website is loyal to the basketball team. Most fans would have mentally switched over to something else by now. Heck, I TRIED to mentally switch off this season. I'm glad to see the optimism you display, even if I don't share it.

  46. There will be more responses to this thread Thursday. Husker fans are always more optimistic after a win. Minnesota doesn't play well in Lincoln. I did a quick perusal of past years, and it looks like the last time the Gophers won in Lincoln was the first year we played a B1G schedule. Huskers win tomorrow!

  48. I think we all latched onto a certain narrative early in the season that the offensive execution and shot selection were poor and have just kind of stuck with it. Then there was the rebounding, which everyone attributes to lack of effort. But after watching the last few games, I haven't really been struck by our poor play so much as our lack of talent. OK, Bryce is an NBA prospect but he's a freshman. Trey is a decent player (and hurt for most of the season) but he's not close to all-BIG level. Lat and Walker wouldn't start for anybody else in the league. Verge can score, but Purdue or Wisconsin wouldn't have considered taking him because his game doesn't translate to winning. Wilcher and Edwards weren't raging successes at their last school and you can see why they left. Kobe seems to be a favorite but that's mainly because he's not Verge. WB showed promise, but he's out. I'm not saying this team is well coached, far from it. We should be able to win a few conference games, but John Wooden couldn't coach this roster to a winning record.
