Or Miles must go because he is getting better out of state talent than instate talent? Or Miles must go because he has brought the best talent that we have seen in years in? Interesting to see the mixed reactions on the bird this morning. When I first heard the news I was a little in shock, but then I go to thinking about it and I am ok with this move. 1. The truth hurts sometimes and if the truth means you aren't good enough, than you aren't good enough. It's as plain and simple as that. We've all been told that before and the sun still comes up tomorrow. 2. Yes the timing sucks, but that's the nature of the business. Don't care what people say, White leaving and this are two totally different things. 3. I don't give a darn if we never see an in state player or not. Now don't get me wrong, if the talent is good enough then by all means recruit that talent. There comes a point when the focus needs to be on winning games though. Was Arop going to get us to that point? In the coaches eyes no and I support that. 4. Both parties will be fine. Losing "fans" because of this tells me that those people were not really "fans" to begin with. Besides, if we start winning games like we all think we should or could, the loss of fans now will be offset later.5 points -

How many of those players started for major conference teams? Also I feel like you're including Deverell Biggs and Akoy Agau in that list, which is also a JOKE I can't believe people are worked up over this. A) We aren't a charity, players have to develop and continue to earn their scholarship throughout high school and college. In state talent also rarely works out. Mike Gessel is basically the only in state player to make any sort of impact at a major conference school the last 10 years, and that impact was 8ppg on less than 40% shooting. Wow, incredible. C) Miles doesn't need to recruit Omaha to be successful. He needs to get the best players regardless of where they're from. If we start winning, local coaches will forget about this and want their players to play for him.5 points -
On the flip side of all this I hear from someone on the team that the team feels very good about where they are as a team heading out of summer conditioning. You know, all that talent that Miles pulled in that were freshman last year? Yeah they feel extremely good about the upcoming season and also very good about the incoming freshman that Miles added to their team. Players leaving? If you mean White then I think it's pretty much been revealed that White's father was much more to blame here and that the departure had way less to do with Miles and/or the program. A player who didn't want to be here leaving the team is a positive in my mind. Assistants leaving? Up for debate but leaving for a head coaching job isn't a knock on Miles, neither is leaving for an alma mater. Burno was a who-knows but he left to coach with a buddy. And Beckner? Sources close claimed he was "beyond weird" and never a good fit. Michael Lewis is a massive upgrade. Desperate? I'd name it pressure to win now. That's deserved by Miles but to call it desperation just because he's bailing on an in-state recruit that didn't pan out? That's absurd. I know it's different because Arop is in-state and there's pressure to get and keep those guys when they're good enough. But Miles absolutely cannot afford to bring in a guy that you can't use (que open scholarship gripers). Miles is making that call and you can't really argue with him when he believes he's got better pieces that he can get instead. He's not just cutting a player loose just to cut one loose. He feels like he has a better use for that scholarship.5 points

Why is everyone saying Miles pulled his scholarship? He didn't. He wanted Arop to suit up a year later, probably because he missed an entire year of high school with a knee injury. Now, one can speculate that this was a political decision, but that's all you can do--speculate. The kid is certainly good enough to get his prep school costs covered, so the money isn't an issue. Is it a disappointing request from Miles? Sure. Is it "cutting him loose?" I haven't seen where the evidence is for this. Miles made the kid a disappointing offer, and the kid turned it down. No one pulled a scholarship. It is what it is. I think it's fine to be annoyed. I don't think it's fine to assume truths with no evidence. Maybe the kid isn't skilled enough yet. From what I've seen, he has the athleticism and lacks ball skills. The latter is exactly the kind of thing an extra year can accomplish. Now, if Arop were to have taken this deal, gone to prep school, and then had an offer pulled, I'd be pissed at TM, but injuries happen, and sitting out an entire year of high school really hurts kids that lean on athleticism as the strength of their game, because they often lack fundamentals.3 points -

Read those from Aguek's perspective, not NU's. He's gotta do what he's gotta do (turn down Miles' suggestion to go to prep school). One thing that gets lost in this is that his family would have to pay for the year of prep school to keep his NU offer, which could be taken away a year from now as well. So it's not a matter of pride, this just really isn't an option for Aguek.3 points -

The issue here is that Nebraska could have had this conversation in the spring which potentially gives Arop more time to get himself recruited somewhere else at that time. I'm not sure there would be a lot less hard feelings though because regardless of when you're talking about changing the terms of a scholarship offer to the Nebraska POTY. As you can see, Miles and Nebraska lost some supporters today/yesterday. I can see your point. And yes, Nebraska has lost some supporters "today". If Nebraska lands Paul White and/or fills the 2017 recruiting class with players on the level of Watson, Morrow, Jacobson, Roby, etc... Then I think the results on the court will speak for themselves and justify Nebraska in this. There will be a few Omaha high school basketball fans that will hold on to this longer, but most will forget about it once football season starts in a week. Tim Miles job = win games. And he probably has to make a huge jump in that department either this season, or the next. Otherwise he may be gone. He has to take the best players he can. In the grand scheme of things winning basketball games >>>> making people in omaha basketball circles happy because fielding guys from Nebraska doesn't keep you employed, winning does.2 points -

To those stating Miles should have cut him loose before the AAU season so other coaches could have evaluated him, one question. Yes he was committed to us but if he was good enough to play big time ball why would that stop others from still go look? I have a hard buying if the kid was good enough that Coach Self would just say "well he's committed to Nebraska so no sense in watching him play". I would hope our coaches would keep looking at kids we want even if they have committed somewhere else.2 points -

Tim Miles / Nebraska did absolutely nothing wrong in this situation. Bruce Chubick flaming Tim Miles publicly is a cheap move, because he knows Miles can't make any public response to defend himself. Also, if people are looking at how this effects Arop... Isn't it better for Nebraska to let him know now that he isn't ready to contribute right away, so if he wants to maximize his college potential, he should first attend a prep school to refine his skills? Isn't that a better situation for Arop than if Nebraska were to bring him in with the 2017 recruiting class, then have him in a position where he will never make it off of the bench and not have a chance to contribute? Players in that situation end up transferring after 1-2 seasons, which means they have to sit out a season due to transfer rules. Is it better for a player to go to prep school for 1 season to refine their game, or to sit out 1 season after their sophomore year of college, because they transferred due to lack of playing time? In Chubick's phone interview, he literally just said multiple times "Arop basically is only going into his junior season, because of his injury". To me, it seems pretty reasonable that Nebraska would want him to reclassify to 2018, so he can play his "senior year" of high school at a prep school, before starting his college career at Nebraska... If people want to blame someone/something for this situation, then they should blame the nature of recruiting. The process has sped up to the point that coaches have to be in on kids years before they graduate high school, otherwise it is too late and they won't have enough time to make up ground on other schools that got in early. Trying to project players that far in advance is a tricky deal. If the recruiting process didn't have to start so soon, in order to keep up with other schools recruiting a player, then these situations would be far less likely. Also, this would be a non-issue if it didn't involve Chubick and an Omaha prospect.2 points -
Walk ons
Red Don and one other reacted to AuroranHusker for a topic
What do you mean by this? A walk on who has an academic scholarship is an advantage over a regular dumb walk on? How so? The obvious advantage is the use of a non-athletic scholarship for a "unrecruited" walk-on. There are recruiting rules in places for this circumstance, that's why the players aren't named until after school is in session. I understand the advantage that could be gained there and the rules in place to stop these occurrences. What I didn't understand was what advantage was gained by having an academic scholarship walk on versus a regular walk on. They are both walk ons so eat up no athletic scholarships. Smart practice players make good teammates, as well. Trevor Menke, Kye Kurkowski.2 points -

Welcome to 2016. I'm recruiting and you have a lot to catch up on. He isn't the first and not nearly the last kid this will ever happen to across the country. Yeah, I don't quite see this one either. White is good, but 4 is the one spot where we're loaded. McVeigh, Morrow, Horne and Jacobson already on the roster. Wouldn't he be a junior in 2017-18, along with Morrow, McVeigh and Jacobson? Maybe he's quite a bit better than those guys, when healthy (i have no idea; I've never seen the guy play). And I'm not sure that grouping would qualify as "loaded" from other teams' perspectives. Like "wow, the guys they have at that spot are crazy good, what will we do?" I mean, I like our guys, and we've upgraded the talent, but we have to keep doing that in this league. Every year.1 point
