    More good news!?

For those who were worried about Jack McVeigh (a 34% shooter from deep on the year last year) taking on a more significant role in the absence of Andrew White (a 41% shooter from deep), I have good news for you. Let's say if you're getting starters minutes, or at least primary rotation-type minutes, then you're playing at least half of the game. Let's look at what Jack McVeigh did in games where he played at least 20 minutes vs. games where he played less than 20 minutes. In games where Jack McVeigh played at least 20 minutes, he shot 44.6% from deep. In games where Jack McVeigh played fewer than 20 minutes, he shot only 24.5% from deep. In the games where Jack didn't play much, it wasn't that he was being pulled for missing shots, either, so you can't say, well, it's obvious he was getting pulled when he wasn't shooting well. That's not what happened. My takeaway from this is that Jack McVeigh rises to the occasion. He had his absolute best stretch when he was inserted into the starting lineup when Shavon got hurt and he averaged 29 minutes, 11 points, and 47.8% from deep. I think now that Andrew is gone, Jack is the presumptive starter at the wing. I know he's been working on his shooting this summer and I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing what he can do this coming season.

  3. Robin has a free article up over at HOL that gives more details on why he missed out on his sophomore season. Sounds like he's been through a lot and really appreciates the Husker staff not writing him off. https://nebraska.rivals.com/news/loyalty-could-pay-off-for-nu-with-2018-guard-brown

  4. Shavon Shields would probably give anything to play one more game with these boys. Andrew White didnt care about the boys. Nebraska was a second choice for AW3 after he couldnt cut it in Kansas. The main difference between AW and a guy like Tai is Tai actually seems to care about Nebraska while AW was using the Huskers as a means to achieve his own financial success. Nothing wrong with looking out for yourself, but I would prefer 3 star guys who will fight every day than 5 tar guys who only want to use Nebraska to make money

Taylor Kissenger has committed to NU today as per the "Taylor Kissenger" thread.

  6. Suck on that for a while Iowa! Didn't know exactly when she would announce but those in and around the Minden area pretty much knew she had her heart set on NU. I think she did her due diligence with the change over in staffs and decided to announce when she felt comfortable. I see her playing the 3.

Will they be quality minutes though? No disrespect to Jordy at all...as he appears to have the makup of being a good one but true freshmen at the center position usually have a rough go at it. With that said, I guess it won't take much to improve upon what we got out of the 5 last year. Question: If Jordy wasn't looking like he can play legit minutes, then why would the local sports news guys continue to do stories about how Ed Morrow and Michael Jacobson both are looking forward to being able to play their natural 4 position? It's Jordy that will allow them to do that if anyone will.

Mention of John Turek - heck, I would have taken the junior/senior version of Turek for defensive purposes last year. He was pretty athletic and at 6'9 would have provided good minutes. Granted, the guy missed a load of chip shots around the basket .

I have a feeling Taylor will fit in with Williams' system a bit better than with Yori's system. In fact, I'm hoping to see everyone get playing time this season so that I'm not constantly wondering why certain people never get to play much. Looking forward to this season and the years beyond!

  10. My issue with that clip is with Tai. Where's the ball pressure? You can't just let Melo stand out there dribbling in one spot clearly looking at the screening action. If Tai has ball pressure and is forcing him away from the obvious action that he's staring at, maybe that pass isn't delivered on point (or delivered at all). I'm guessing Tai was afraid of giving up the dribble drive.Trimble timed that perfectly. He dribbled away from the screen, re-screen action and turned back to make the pass just as Laymon is coming back off the 2nd screen. We could do that too. If we had a shooter that opposing defenses had to chase around the floor. Maybe Jack McVeigh can be that guy. Hands in his pockets, almost standing, Norm! He's sitting on the bench if you're coaching the squad and I know it!

Actually he has a son of a doctor shot -- but he indeed has a good touch from the outside and a fundamentally sound shot. Remember, he really did not play with his back to the basket in HS. His buddy that is now part of the Iowa football team was the "post" player. So MJ knows what to do outside of the paint. http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/mens-basketball/stronger-jacobson-eager-to-take-his-game-to-natural-position/article_9fc892cc-14f1-5ec2-b548-00645a211ad0.html

    More bad news!?

All I know is what I saw in one exhibition game/scrimmage at the beginning of last season. What I saw there is a guy who could pull up and shoot and score from anywhere, even under heavy pressure. He could create his own shot. He could also defend well. He looked to me like the best player on the floor that night.

Will be interesting with 3 years of Stallworth whether Taylor is mainly a 2. When we signed Stallworth I wondered it it would affect the recruiting of Taylor. I knew at the time of the home game with Illinois last year we were in great shape to get Taylor, but a lot happened after that. To still get her commitment shows me a lot about the recruiting, but also about Taylor. Here's hoping for a great career here.

  20. Did anybody else notice the poor defense by one of our former players in the video at 3:50?

  21. They didn't cover Nebraska's gritty come-back in the MD game. Look at the screen-rescreen that gets Laymon open for a trey at about the 4:10 mark. First of all, excellent execution by Maryland. The slo-mo and combined camera angles really allow you to see how that play developed. You can see Shields over-committing on the first screen and being out of position to challenge the second screen. Second, how is that not an illegal screen? Frustrates me to no end when the screener is moving and picks off our defender trying to chase their shooter. Refs don't call it and we don't do it. Check out the reactions to Miles' post-game speech. And juxtapose that against what Lanigan said about Andrew White thinking about leaving (I mean when Lanigan first brought it up.) Question: Is that a team you could abandon if it was you?

YEA !!! Great thing for Nebraka kids, and the HUSKERS !!!! :D :D :D Coach Williams and staff are clearly out working and recruiting. Nice start with two of the best in Nebraska, and a nice transfer recruit. Count this one as a win !

Assuming Raoul is correct, that's an impressive piece of recruiting. The Kissingers were close to Amy Stephens, and to overcome the staff change is impressive.

I've mentioned this before quite a few times: This season will be the most complete team of the Miles era, even without AW-III. That is a welcome sight. The Big Ten will eat you alive if you have dead-weight on the floor, and now that issue seems to be behind Miles & Co.

    More bad news!?

Some of the points CWG mentioned is why I am still optimistic for this year. I'd feel better if White was still here....but I still think we can be competitive. Mostly because we now have a complete lineup. Miles has even spoke about it in the past, about having empty minutes. In the past, we had times where we would have 1,2 or even 3 guys on the floor who were simply no threat to score. Teams left Parker practically unguarded at times and we couldn't make them pay for it. We'll, for the first time, be putting a lineup on the floor where all 5 guys have the ability to produce. We may not have the definitive go to guy to show for it right now...but we'll have 5 guys instead of 3 that can do something. That takes a lot of pressure off.

That's what I'm thinking of when I look at the proverbial "next year." I think we'll be pretty good this year and we only lose one senior off of this year's team. Hell, probably 7 of our top 9 players are going to be freshmen and sophomores.

  32. Totally disagree with this. In fact, I'm not willing to concede that we won't be an NCAA team even without Andrew. Wouldn't it be amusing if we won our first NCAA game this year without him? Let's turn a negative into a positive.

  33. Andrew White leaving hurts short term, but should be good for us long term. That's about 30 min a game that will be filled by McVeigh (So), Roby (Fr), and Horne (Fr). This is also a team that will only have one senior and 7/10 players that will make up our rotation will be Fr. and So. As the title of another thread states, THE SKY IS NOT FALLING.

  36. I'm as much upset that Andrew White is leaving as anyone, but I'm also wondering if bashing him actually does any good. The team needs positive energy. AW is leaving...let him go. The guys that are staying are the ones that matter now. GO BIG RED!

  37. They've been in on him since the day he could walk. A little (blue)bird told me that Coach Mac was actually present to watch Matthew Hurt's conception. He really loved the form of Mr. Hurt's "shot" so I wouldn't be surprised if Coach Mac comes a-callin'…now that the temporary restraining order has expired. Here's a file photo of him giving Mrs. Hurt some tips during warm-ups:
