T'his sums all of college sports for me right now: Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, who once coached his son with an AAU team, recently mentioned that “winning is devalued in the AAU structure” and along with that team goals are forsaken for personal agendas. “Teams play game after game after game, sometimes winning or losing in four times a day,” Kerr said. “Very rarely do teams ever hold a practice. … If mom and dad aren’t happy with their son’s playing time, they switch club teams and stick him on a different one the following week. The process of growing as a team basketball player – learning how to become part of the whole, how to fit into something bigger than oneself – becomes completely lost within the AAU fabric.”

  2. I remember one dad once said the reason he didn't want his son to play select soccer during the soccer season was that he didn't want his son to be at his 20 year reunion and have to listen to his teammates talk about winning state and asking how he liked that tournament in Chicago he went to that weekend. I thought that was kind of funny.

  3. Let's just say for some people here, having a source would be redundant. Also, I guess if anything is to be gathered from bringing up McBuckets in this trainwreck of a thread is that a guy can come back for his last year and improve his draft stock. Even though AW III had a great year I certainly saw room for improvement that I know he can achieve here. Or I could post more crude anti-creighton graphics. I'm pretty good at that.

  6. I spoke with a former baseball scout at an Optimist breakfast a month ago or so and he told me travel teams were killing the game of baseball. Basically, said the samething Kerr did.

  9. I think Amy Williams will be a coach whose style players readily appeciate. She's very fired up and enthusiastic in games. Like any program in college basketball - men's or women's - it's about recruiting for talent and fit. I've already written this about Connie, and I'm comfortable saying it: I thought it got away from Connie a lil bit after the Cady/Sample/Teara/Brandi class. She aimed for a lil more talent, got some poor fits, and, until Rachel Blackburn came along in this class, I think there were a few classes there where she didn't get a natural leader with some attitude on the court. What interesting is, I think Britney Brown actually was a really good hire. I think she had things moving back toward what Connie built the program with -- athletes, hard workers, defenders. And Kathleen Doyle is a Lindsey Moore type. Britney got it.

  10. Huskers lose 3-2....wheels come off in the last inning. Solid performance from Burkamper...no clutch hitting and all of Rutgers runs thanks to errors. Things are starting to get pretty dicey in making the Big Ten tournament. We still have 11 Big Ten games to go....but if we fail to make the Big Ten tournament I hope Eichorst and Erstad have a long long talk....like Erstad doing what is best for Nebraska and maybe moving on.

Pretty sure the latter.I figured that was more than likely the answer since Burkamper and Meyers gave been pitching well and Waldron is healthy. And yep as I type McSteen is coming in to pitch the 8th.

  14. I hope you are pointing out that wanting exposure over winning is a problem, because all those parents with misconceptions who think their babies should be the star will kill a team. AAU is not good for the development of individual players or team ball. I don't care if you are the best player on the team, as a coach I didn't care what was best for you to advance your college "career. " I did what was best for the team I was supposed to be leading at that time. I know a coach who I respected very much who played his 6'6 player at point because he thought that would help his college recruitment as opposed to what would have been best for his team, and that would be keeping him in the post most of the time. I didn't and still don't agree with that. I felt that it was my responsibility to do what was best for US as a whole as opposed to what was best for me or any one player. I had a sports reporter tell me it was my job to get my kids in the paper. I told him that was his job. Personally I didn't care if the game were in the paper at all or even if anyone was in the stands. I wanted my kids to play for themselves and mostly for each other. And I do realize that goals and reality don't always match up.

  15. You have an EX on campus? No but did in college, made it tough to go to class and to the bars at night because she would be there. No I have been with my wife for 36 years, married 31 of those and dated for 5 years. This was pre-wife.

  18. Hastings has five or six travel teams and by the time they get to legion ball they can only get 13 or 14 to field a team. This year I think they have 16 out.

  20. A funny, honest question because I'm curious of the responsesYou've been dating your high school girlfriend for 3 years now. She's pretty attractive but not the top of her class. Now you go off to college and a bombshell chooses to sit next to you and you can tell she's totally into you. You realize that it probably wouldn't be the best decision to leave your girlfriend and pursue this girl because she seems like one that moves from one guy to the next, but the thrill of getting even one shot with this girl intrigues you enough to think about it. What would you do? WWJD "What Would Jordy Do?" Depends. Are we talking about today me? Or 19 year old me?

  23. I've lost count of the number of times I've made Adam Woodbury T-Rex or Woodbury eye-poking jokes on this board and can't for the life of me remember one counterpoint post on here about why my blatantly obvious biased point of view is wrong. It's almost like those guys don't have to make post after post after post to let me know that I might be biased towards their team and would almost certainly root for Woodbury if he was a Husker.....like I'm the one who doesn't get it.

OH NO!

  26. Nice - Same thing with Horne vs Porter in the state finals here. Porter is the highly touted kid and Horne matched him and surpassed him that day.

  28. Steve Kerr is a very smart man! Could not agree more. Still amazing college coaches put such an emphases on AAU ball when they evaluate an athlete. I know a big part is the period that they are allowed contact with the players is during the AAU season but it is making the game worse in my opinion.

    2017 Recruits

Do you think Coach Williams cooled on her recruitment when she made the move to Lincoln? Interesting that the new SD coach didn't get much time if any at all to see if she could lure her in.

  35. Even though Vandy let their coaching staff go, I think they're still very much in play for Kathleen. Should they make a quick hire and it be a slam dunk it would create a really difficult decision for Kathleen if the new coach wanted to pursue her. I don't expect a commitment out of Kathleen in the near future or at least until the new Vanderbilt coach has been hired. Basically right now Vandy is in the same boat as the Huskers depending on that hire. One thing the Huskers have though for a player of her caliber, is the lure of immediate playing time and most likely a lot of it.

  37. And to top it off, he is fast: Dixon 94, Mendota 50: Isaiah Roby made his season debut after a foot injury and helped set a senior class record in the 800 relay during a dual win at Mendota. The all-senior quartet of Roby, Nate Gascoigne, Benny Mayes and Kyle LeBlanc finished in 1:39.25, and represented one of 12 meet wins for the Dukes. Gascoigne also ran the second leg on the winning 1,600 relay team (3:39.55), joining Josh Dallas, Bryson Forrest and Jared Harrison.

  38. It is what it is with AAU, but to demand structure from a bunch of private, invite-only tournaments isn't necessarily legitimate. I mean, I highly doubt that players in NBA camps and summer leagues are really concerned about winning and losing as their first priority. Like many of these AAU kids, they are playing for a personal opportunity at a better life and a tremendous amount of money (cash or scholarship). AAU is much more similar to an NBA camp than a high school basketball league. Kids on the same team are often competing for the same scholarships. Hell, even at the highest levels of the NBA, players are also playing to get a fat check for a negotiated contract or pending free agency despite how important winning is to them. My point is, if you are an elite athlete, you need to legitimately be concerned about how to monetize your gifts, and that requires being seen and filling up the stat sheet. If you are going to be a walk-on, winning should be the only thing that matters. If you are a parent of a talented young athlete, you need to do whatever you can to get your baby to college. As a parent, I think winning high school basketball games (a lower level of competition than AAU, by the way) should be lower on the totem pole than exposure for your kid. Unfortunately, there are a lot of parents who have grand misconceptions about how good their kid actually is.

  39. That's pretty much my point. White would be dumb (as would almost any contributing major conference junior) to not put his name out there to get some feedback, of course this is assuming that he wants to be an NBA player. Seems like a lot of work playing basketball for a living and getting paid millions of dollars to do so. No need to post anti-Creighton graphics, I can just post scores from the last five years.
