geno slams uconn critics...

We get way too caught up on this board about stars and rankings. Bottom line is there are about 10 girls a year that leave hs nationwide that are true physical difference makers day 1 and they are very easy to spot. Geno is a great great coach and maximizes kids development, but he is getting 2-4 of those 10 kids every year. The other 6-8 are spreading out to other schools. and then those schools that get them don't likely get more than 1 of them, and likely only get them every couple of years. Because of this Geno is able to create an atmosphere of competition that other schools can't. At other schools kids can work hard, but not buy n 100 percent, and still get on the court and have some success because they are still better than the other kids on their team. At UConn, if a kid doesn't buy in 100 percent no matter how talented, they have somebody else that will take those minutes. That is how the top 40 mens teams are because there is so much less separation with men in ability. After the first 10 the difference between number 25-75 is a slight talent separation at best, and the difference between 25 -250 isn't even that extreme. No guarantees number 50 is any more successful than number 250 if 250 works harder.2 points -

UConn beat the 5 seed Mississippi St yesterday 98-38 in a Sweet 16 match up. It was 61-14 at the half. I can't imagine tv viewership would be very high with that kind of result.2 points -

I watched his film also and I thought he did a lot of things that I liked. First of all, when he would set up in the low blocks, he would do it at 6'10" and 250 pounds. I really liked the way he ran the floor at 6'10" and 250 pounds. There were a couple of times in the flow of the game where he really stepped in and was 6'10" and 250 pounds. So, I mean, I don't think we have anyone on our roster who can do those things at 6'10" and 250 pounds. Nebraska has recruited a bunch of big guys that cant play. That's the point. Your sarcasm and view that he is a good player because of his size is well beneath your own intelligence. Oh, please. Whatever. Save your sanctimony for someone else. You're the same guy who started a thread on November 28, 2015 entitled, "Any hope of a big man next year?" Followed by starting a thread on December 15, 2015 entitled, "Nearly a decade since recruiting a true center, why?" Followed by another thread on December 25, 2015 entitled, "10yr season ticket holder. Time to give up?." Well, hey, guess what? We're involved with a big man for next year, a true center, who happens to have offers from Arizona, Virginia Tech, TCU, Oklahoma State and Boston College among others, and you're going to look down your nose at him, the very kind of player you've claimed you've been wanting, because he's just not quite as pretty as you wanted? Knock it off.2 points -

The thing is though, that even back then it was common knowledge that Self was the next in line for the KU job as soon as Roy retired/moved on and he knew that it would be bad form (at best) to move to KU from a conference school. Illinois was a much better opportunity for him that allowed more freedom to leave for KU when it came available. Turns out that his destination job came open earlier than anyone expected. It may not have been the worst thing to miss out on Self.2 points -

I think is clearly a case where Coach Riley needs to knock on Miles door and says look Tim I really need these two kids you need another shooter this kid isn't so bad , let's work something out. Tim looks at Coach Riley and says ok but you need to get on a plane and go find me a giant that score with his back to the basket and with that they make deal2 points -

Where I think we disagree Karl is that I don't think 10-35 can influence a womens game even close to level of 1-10 and maybe even 1-5. The drop off in ability to dominate is extreme. If Stewart wasn't on UCONN they would have lost several games over the last few years.1 point -

Why would this guy complain about anything....especially what someone else says. talks cheap.....My old motto...let the play on the court do the talkin The womens game for now and into the foreseeable future, just doesn't have the numbers of high quality players, that the men's game does. There are 30+ men wanting to get on every major NCAA Bball team, that are capable of major college play. It's just not that way currently, for the women. So when #1 (or #2 or #3 player) goes to a certain women's coach almost every year...it's much easier to be dominate. That's where Geno is today. He gets the top player in country (or at least top 1-5 player every year so he dominates.) Not saying it's right wrong or otherwise...just where we are today. Sure he's a good coach....but the talent he has is the difference. Give a few other ...good...coaches his squad, and they would be dominate too.1 point -

I don't want to ruin my reputation by quoting myself, but . . . I've been high on Jacobson since we signed him. The cupboard isn't empty at center. I'm not banking on Jacobson growing 3 inches, I'm banking on him bulking up and continuing to improve. I'd be more impressed if we could grab a few kids like this and developed them, rather than swinging and missing at big names. (I just can't get my mind around an empty scholarship.) He's going to end up a big, strong kid who can keep the ball out of the post and pull taller opposing centers away from the basket with his outside shooting. As for Hammond, I have no idea about internal team issues or attitude, but otherwise I haven't given up on him. He shouldn't have played last year, and the picture would look a lot different if this year he had been a redshirt freshman. He has a lot of things to work on, but he can still be a very productive player. He doesn't have to be all-BIG to help this team.1 point -

I actually thought KU got some calls myself. Which goes to show that depending on how you see the game, can be different. Even after the Grahm foul, Mason clearly double dribbled when he hit the big 3 pointer late in the game. Nobody mentioned it as it happened so fast, but he clearly put two hands on the ball as he was about to pass it, re-picked it up and then dribbled again. I for one was happy to see KU lose. I have NO sympathy for them not getting a "few calls" as they tend to get them all (at least through my eyes)1 point -

Man- no offense, but that is women's basketball. I think it's safe to say that the pressure of beating Creighton doesn't quite measure up. Stealing the coach that owned us at Creighton is what my point was. I don't think we had the fortitude to swallow the pride and get the guy we needed. So here we sit. Offense taken...it is certainly relevant IF you are saying that UNL will not consider hiring a coach from Creighton. That was not the stumbling block in hiring Dana. No, let me dumb this down for you. Coni Yori posed little threat to the pride of Nebrasketball. When hired, most didn't know who she was, and the others didn't give a damn. Dana Altman was putting teams (that were relevant to sports in Nebraska) on the court that were better than ours. He out coached us and won. He has won 2 NCAA tourney games at a mid-major, while we...well never mind. We would rather try to beat him than hire him. That certainly was a poor choice (I'll refrain from citing his overall record vs. NU, definitely won't mention his record against Collier). For anyone on this board to not give Dana Altman his due props, or not lement not going after him full force, I believe is sour grapes. We got Collier, then we got Doc, now, we're on the outside looking in again. Dana has us winning in the tourney. Guarantee it.-1 points -

Here are a couple reasons to try to learn from the past: 1) 63-67 in 4 seasons 2) 27-45 in conference play 3) 0-13 career vs. McDermott 4) 0-4 vs. Creighton Are we satisfied with the decisions we've made in Husker basketball in the past decade? Given the circumstances we faced at the time of Sadler's hire, I would say, "Yes." No doubt you recall that we were trying to fill a vacancy that came up at a very bad time for hiring a coach and that a number of good coaching prospects were approached but declined in part because of that timing and further that Doc Sadler was a fairly "hot" coaching prospect who was eager to come. Did it work out as well as we would have liked? Clearly not. But since you have gained such wisdom from your perusal of the past perhaps you can share why the decision to hire him was not a good one as it was made at the time. Heaven forbid, though, you posit some nonsensical idea like "we should have hired Dana Altman." Why not instead say, "we should have hired Coach K or Bill Self?" I mean, if we are going to play "what if" let's at least play it right. So, I'm thinking he was at least attainable with the right deal in 2007. Well, you're thinking wrong. By that time Dana was established and wasn't going to take a career-killing job like Nebraska. No way is he taking that job. He was going to pick his job, and it wasn't going to be this one. We couldn't hire Self when he was a newbie at Tulsa, and we sure as hell couldn't have hired Altman in '07. Go ahead and throw as much crap around here as you want, but at least have it be remotely realistic. Anyone who has spent 5 minutes with the Altmans know you're pipe dream was never happening. The reality of the world is that money talks. Altman accepted a preliminarily position at Arkansas for 1.5M per year. We are paying over 2M today for not even playing in the NIT. And you don't think we could've gotten a deal done???? It would have been worth a full blown effort and if he turned down a 500K higher bid, then I would happily say "at least we tried". But, we didn't. Too proud to go after the Creighton guy.-1 points -

The year was 2007, we needed a coach. Bad. We opened the search to go far and wide, looking across the country. But we missed one. There was a guy that had 10 straight 20 win seasons, more NCAA tourney wins than our program, and had dominated us head-to-head. We looked far and wide, but the answer may have been right under our nose. Or maybe about 40 miles away. His name was Dana. Dana Altman. Hell, his dad even lived in Wilbur. But did we offer him? No. Did we consider him? No. Why? Because we can't have a Creighton guy. Where would we be today if we had offered him what we're paying now to not even sniff the NIT? I would be willing to bet that we would be dancing right now. Oh well. Maybe next year? Or at least that's what we've been trained to say.-1 points
