  1. The biggest implication of the decision to not play in the postseason is that I won't be able to make up ground in the HHC Contest.

  2. One of my kids told me that the decision was made by the players. Again, I get it from a health an education perspective. But...well, I am just bummed that our season is now over.

  8. Board members who observed the most beautiful thing the state of Nebraska offers - what were your thoughts? I'll go first! Players: • A. Arop is the real deal. Love his game. Beautiful stroke, long, athletic enough, adds an element we don't have in a beautiful midrange game. Plays hard, great teammate. Will need a year or so to adjust to actually playing help defense and gap/pack principles. Concerns - health. I don't know why, maybe because of his injury, but he just looks like he has bad knees. Hope I'm wrong. • Ed Chang, please come to Nebraska. Something about that shooting stroke and ball skills at his height make me think he could be special. Along with Arop, needs a professional to work with him in the off season on lower body development. Those super long, tall dudes can develop knee problems if they don't develop a love for the weight room and body development. • David Wingett- you guys know my stances on Nebraksa kids. Take a chance on them before taking a chance on someone else. Thoughts from the board - what is holding us back? Grades? Anything else? He's a lefty who can dribble, shoot from anywhere (it's developing), and he's athletic enough. Much like Arop/Chang - needs some serious weight room development. But he's a legit 6'7", 6'8". • Caleal Walker - grades are the issue I believe. Will have to go to a JUCO. Can he go to a prep academy? Like Khyri Thomas? Needs some work on his stroke, but his athleticism and instincts are incredible. I'd be developing a relationship with the young man and just seeing where it goes. Maybe he turns out to be a player? You never know... The basketball I hate zone. Nebraska needs the shot clock. Although the shot clock might encourage more teams to play zone. So I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Elmwood-Murdock put on a fundamental offensive clinic vs Winnebago at the Devaney. Beautiful to watch. That's all I have for now.

  9. This year we saw a Tai Webster who was night and day better from last year. Proof that we shouldn't give up on a player after one or two lackluster seasons. These players are only kids and have to learn to deal with both the mental and physical stress of being a student athlete at such a high level. For players like Tai and Jack they also have to adjust to American basketball and being so far away from home. Here is my list for possible most improved players for next year: 1. Jake Hammond. This is the ideal one. If he can get a little bigger and go from 2pt and 3 reb a game to say 6 points and 6 rebounds that would be huge. He is already our best post defender. 2. Glynn Watson is the most likely candidate. I wouldn't be surprised if he is around 14 points a game average and 4-5 assists. 3. Jack McVeigh is another logical choice just based on how much his production increased when Shavon was out. 4. Nick Fuller is my wildcard. With the added depth at the four he should be able to move back to the wing and hopefully he rediscovers his stroke. If he could pair up a decent 3 shot with energy and hustle he could be next year's Benny Parker for us in a way. Feel free to share your thoughts.

  10. Since the season is officially over I'm gonna break down our returning starters and incoming recruits and the impact I think they will have for us. - Andrew White: starting at the 3. Should be a volume scorer for us again. Would like to see him add some more to his game and build on his versatility. I thought he was making progress towards the end of the season in being a more complete scorer. - Anton Gill: in contention for a starting spot. Will more than likely have to battle it out with Tai for a spot next to Watson. Seems to be a prolific scorer that can do so in multiple ways. From what I heard his weakness is defense so we will see if foul trouble becomes a problem for him. - Bakari Evelyn: don't see alot of time for him unless injuries occur or he vastly improves on whatever was holding him back from playing more this year. Miles mentioned he could play next year or redshirt. - Edward Morrow: potential starter at the 4. Showed a lot of promise in the limited action he played this year. Morrow needs to get healthy and add a competent jumper to his game. This kid is money around the rim. - Glynn Watson: starting PG. Not much competition for him at the 1. I look for him to take over and be a productive and consistent scorer and facilitator. - Isaiah Roby: too good not to play. Could work his way into the starting lineup as the year goes on. Will be White's back up and understudy. Roby will probably be battling McVeigh for playing time. Interesting to see if he is a point forward like advertised. - Jack McVeigh: possible starter at the 4 but also could have trouble finding minutes. White will have the majority of the minutes at the 3 so Jack will be competing with Roby for back up minutes there. The 4 spot is also gonna be a little crowded so I wouldn't be surprised to see Jack start but I also wouldn't be surprised to see him struggling to find the floor. Bulking up a little bit would help him tremendously. - Jake Hammond: most important player to develop this off season imo. Even if we land a good big guy we still need a decent backup. Hammond could range from starting to not playing just like he did this year. Ideally we land a talented center and Hammond is able to back him up with a quality 12-15 minutes a game. - Jeriah Horne: possible redshirt candidate. I don't doubt his skill but he seems to be in a log jam at the 4 with Morrow, McVeigh, and Jacobson. Plus I know he is a stout kid but he looks like he could use a year with the weights to get more cut and lean. - Michael Jacobson: possible starter at 4 or 5 depending on if we land a center. Everyone seems to be convinced he has the potential to grow so here's to hoping he grows an inch or two. Miles has said he is a great athlete so I don't doubt his ability to play the four. I would like to see his 3 pt shot develop more effectively and some smoother post moves. - Nick Fuller: more than likely buried on the bench at either the 3 or 4. Hopefully they move him back to the three and he can regain his shot back. Was an okay shooter but I think the grind of playing in the post really wore him down and made him lose confidence in his shot. - Tai Webster: possible starter at the two. I see him more as the 6th man as he can backup both Glynn and Anton. If he could take another step like he did this year you are looking at the 6th man of the year or even 1st or 2nd team Big Ten caliber player. Hopefully he learns to be more consistent with his agrssiveness especially with Shields gone we will need a good slasher.

  13. Jack needs to put on 25lbs of muscle. He needs to improve his vertical. His lack of quickness bit him often, and if you are not quick, then we need him to be stronger.

  14. Trust me when I say I have not earned that compliment yet. And your observations are just as worthwhile as mine. What game did you watch? Serious question. Because he had a poor game against Fremont, where his midrange game did fail him. Comparison to Kyle Marks couldn't be any further off, fwiw. He's a 3 at the next level, and his shot will be just fine, fundamentals are there, handles will be fine. Remember he's just a junior, playing on a team that doesn't necessarily (or at all) work through him or get him shots. They pressure and get steals, then just play dribble drive 5 out on offense. Whoever scores, scores, almost exactly like Central a few years ago (sans a big man). Also sat out all of last year. Is he a 5-star? No, not what I'm saying. But I fully believe assuming things go as plan, he can be a very solid player for us. I was at the game against Papio and the game against Fremont. I think he was 2-8 from the line against Papio, and the misses were ugly. Perhaps the fundamentals you see will prevail, but I saw a guy without an outside shot. So I was hoping he can grow into a 4, cause I didn't see a 3 on offense.

  15. Couldn't disagree more with Jones on Arop. A great stroke? Really? Midrange game? As of now, this guy can't shoot. Or handle it. He's Kyle Marks. Athletic guy who is too small to play the 4, and doesn't have the skills to play the wing. At the highest levels they won't let him get to the rim, so he better develop a shot. A huge project to develop a game to go with the length and athleticism. I'm hoping we're getting past the need to do that here. Having said all of that, Jones has forgotten more about hoops than I'll ever know, but that is really what I saw this week.

In defense of my grammar I typed the whole post on my phone so that's the excuse I'm going to role with.Norm is saying you need to be a part-time grammar cop if he ever goes on vacation. He wasn't commenting on your grammar. So, you're good!Precisely. Just follow atskooc's lead. Don't correct everything or everyone. Just enough, yknow, to maintain some standards around here.

  23. Ed's athleticism gives him a high ceiling. He's a bit raw in some areas but that splendid athleticism means he probably has the most potential for further development. Watson still has room for improvement but he's much closer to reaching his potential than Morrow. Can you imagine Ed Morrow developing a three-point shot like Vito Brown? This is not to say Morrow will be the guy, but he has the most room to move upward within the ceiling he has. I think they all could come back as significantly improved players next year. None are as good as they could be. The question we have to wait to see answered is will they?

  24. Fans understandably want to see more hoops, but I think this is for the best. There is so little to be gained from a CBI appearance and a handful of extra practices for a team that is physically worn down from a brutally long season. And obviously we need to get back to recruiting hard because that "shiny new toy" window is closing fast on us. These guys finished really strong and with a ton of heart. I'm glad that this run will be their last memory of a somewhat disappointing season. If I'm a player I'd prefer that to losing at home to Canisius or something because no one gave a crap.

  27. I somehow got the impression that Miles wanted to keep playing so the team, particularly the freshmen, could get more experience. Assume Eichorst has final say, maybe he didn't want to spend the $$. Then again maybe Miles agreed and its best for all.

  30. I think you should see improvement/more consistency from almost all the freshmen as long as they stay healthy. Last summer/fall Morrow - Foot injury Jacobson - Foot injury McVeigh - playing in Europe Spending their summer in the weight room will be huge for these guys as they all can use more strength. You could say the same for Watson. Evelyn needs to work on whatever aspect of his game that kept him out of the lineup, be it defense and/or shooting. Hammond needs more strength and just needs to keep practicing. He probably will never be a 30 minute a guy and/or full time starter. He has gone from no playing time to 10 or so quality games. Can we count on him for 20 quality games of him part time? Right now Fuller is Ed Morrow without Ed Morrow's athletic ability. To be blunt if he's going to be an undersized post player who can't/won't shoot from 3 then he's really wasting his time here and using up a scholarship we should be using on either a post player, shooting guard, or a Div 1 transfer. If I had to pick one guy who makes the biggest leap I'd say Morrow.

  33. All our players should take it to the next level next year. That is my expectation. One (and I am pretty sure that one is Coach Miles) can go down the line with each player and point out areas where improvement is necessary and expected.

I would never put Petteway and White as anywhere near comparable when it comes to shot selection. Never. Never. Ever. Now, a lot of that came from Petteway being much better at creating his own shots, but many times he was creating his own bad shots. And to be fair there were many times he hit a lot of those bad shots.

This discussion reminds me of my argument that you can't just have the best shooter on the team take all the shots. In other words, you can't say to have White shoot all the threes because he's best at it. He might be best at it, but he'll never get an open look if there aren't other guys on your team that the opposing D has to account for. I think you saw a little of that last night. White was almost NEVER open for a catch-and-shoot rhythm jumper. And maybe you can leave the word "almost" out of that last sentence. You might need to have a lower-percent shooter take some shots just to open things up for your higher percent guy to get some decent looks. And so it is with shots at the rim and threes. Yeah, those are nice and all, and the analytics shows those are the best. But when defenses are doing their level best to take those options away, it's nice that we have a couple of guys who can hit mid-range buckets fairly reliably. Would you rather miss from mid-range or have a shot clock violation because you can't otherwise get an open look?

I don't think it is. The big picture can and should inform the shot making in the games. Analytics help reveal weakness, strength and pattern. Give the guys the information and education and expect them to utilize it, it will improve the way the pay the game. It's happening all across the sport. Only problem is those shots at the rim or just beyond the arc aren't always available. Defenses know that whole analytics thing, too. So, they're trying to take away the highest epercentage looks. But Shavon and Glynn have this somewhat unique ability to hit mid-range pull-up Js. If that forces a defense to respond, you might get better looks from those higher value spots. So you probably can't just ignore the mid-range game. Now, White stepping a foot inside the arc? What's that all about? Different issue.

  42. Leading up to this meeting with the AD 2 of the team leaders had indicated they wanted to play as had Miles. After the meeting "We are all in agreement." No statement of support from the AD. We have coach Mo singing Miles praises after our loss to Maryland. Playing in a post season would have been very valuable as it is extra practice time, which would have been very valuable to our young team. The school work excuse doesn't hold water with me. If we had won enough to play in the NCAA tourney no one would have cared about missed classes. Contrast that with the multiple times during the season that the AD publicly supported HIS football coach hire and then being in support of our our football team, 5-7, playing in post season game. That decision had a lot of national negative press and embarrassment for a once proud football program. Not a lot of consistency here.
