    uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: Vol 8, Issue 20 - @ Michigan State

      CZST_mJWEAA8Fr_.jpg

      - Before the game, watching on the BTN app, they had a feed from the Breslin Center during intros. While the NU players were being introduced, get this, they were LEADING a "Go Green, Go White" cheer. While they were announcing NU players!!! Can you believe that?!? How rude!!! Also, the non-student fans weren't exactly into it. They were sitting and clapping and stuff. No standing. No standing until the first MSU bucket. Not sure most realize how good things at NU really are.
      - Pretty big defensive breakdown on the first play of the game.
      - Looked like White had a pretty clear shot at an offensive rebound on NU's first possession.
      - MSU got off to the fast start that NU couldn't allow. I like the time out :50 in, intensity clearly elevated after that.

    - Leaving shooters open probably isn't a good recipe for success.
    - True to form, both teams fouling quite a bit early.
    - I think NU is just fine letting McQuaid shoot from just about anywhere on the floor.
    - NU holding their own just fine early.
    - Shields making things happen in the paint.
    - NU cleaning up the glass nicely.
    - Watson just isn't afraid.
    - Playing aggressively. Finishing. Can they maintain this level of play?
    - A little sloppy play, a couple quick shots and unsurprisingly, MSU makes a bit of a run.
    - And NU responds right back. That's great to see!
    - Looks like things got moving a little fast after the under 8 media. White picking up his 2nd didn't help.
    - Hmmm...Shields going down wouldn't be good.
    - I would have brought White in when Shields went down.
    - Webster doing some nice work at the end of the half, there.
    - Love how Parker sells out.
    - Tied at halftime. About all you can ask for!

    - Dimes, based on my source on the scene, I think you were right about the enthusiasm of the crowd.

    - Shields starts the 2nd half. Good news! And gets the bucket like nothing happened!
    - Mmmm...3 on AW3 isn't good.
    - Shields can get about any shot he wants.
    - ...and 4 on White...shoot...MSU went right at him on back to back possessions.
    - Gonna need Webster to step up.
    - MSU turned into the aggressor for a bit. NU needs to get back on the attack.
    - Somehow MSU stopped fouling.
    - NU really having trouble defending Davis and not fouling.
    - Valentine doing his thing. That's frustrating.
    - Wow, Shields can do no wrong.
    - BIG shot from McVeigh!
    - Webster has a tendency to get caught under the basket. Got bailed out a couple of times.
    - Seems like Parker probably shouldn't throw himself in front of a freight train very often.
    - Oh man, this team is starting to believe. Can they finish? Up 8 at the under 8.
    - White comes back with 7 minutes left...
    - Shields forced things a bit after that MSU 3 to cut it to 4.
    - Oh man, Jacobson's 3 went half way down TWICE!
    - Up 4 at the under 4... nervous...
    - Watson didn't do much after the first three minutes of so of the 2nd half. He needs to be more involved.
    - Too much Webster down the stretch. Watson. Shields. White.
    - And there's Shields again! Just a MONSTER game from him!
    - Loved the play after the clock stoppage! Attack the rim! Gotta hit the free throws, though!
    - How was that a foul on White? And for his 5th? C'mon. And they get free throws out of it. Brutal, potential game changing stretch.
    - Then Jacobson with the foul after Shields' miss. It was a foul, but bad timing. Man...
    - Of course MSU hits all theirs...
    - Didn't like the shot, but a big battle for the board from MJ! Those were some cold-blooded FT's. Good on ya, kid!
    - Big time shot by Harris. Wow.
    - That bank by Valentine, are you kidding me?
    - Webster ALMOST. ALMOST cost the game, but, you now what, he didn't!
    - I thought that shot was going in from Valentine. I was sure of it.
    - HOT DAMN! HOT DAMN! HOLY SHIELDS!

    - The talk was can they split the next four games? Well, they got a bit piece of that puzzle out of the way.
    - Did this with almost nothing from White. That's impressive.
    - This may be the defining performance of Shavon Shields' career. I mean, wow!
    - Didn't get much from Morrow, either. He'll bounce back.

"Nebraska survives last shit..."   Mr. Forde apparently saw the 5th foul call on White.

Feels good to be ahead of both MSU and Wisky in B1G standings nearly halfway through conference season.

Isn't it illegal to take a "shit" on the floor in a basketball game?

The funny thing is after watching that game I thought you were right about it.

It was almost all student section until the last few minutes.

people will overlook this but Jack McVeigh hit two MONSTER 3's tonight from the corner. Wanted to give him the props he deserved, he played extremely well tonight

I wish he would have shot that other one midway through the 2nd half instead of making the extra pass to a gassed Shields. LIGHT IT UP AUSSIE!

Not entirely shocking...until we get back to the top of the standings and/or the tourney we're the team that people mentally check off as a win on their home court.

Some of my takes on the game.

    1.  Very impressed with our rebounding in this one.  Michigan St. is a dominant rebounding team, year in year out.  We got outboarded by about 25 or something against NW?  We are doing a much better job.  We are not getting exposed so easily on a simple pick and roll which is the key to it all.  It was compromising our entire defense and rebounding position.  We also are doing one hell of a job of tipping balls to each other, which is very effective.  Jacobsen is nutting it up nicely.  Proving me wrong on my thoughts about him.  He is going to be very solid down the road.

    2.  Continuing to really look to attack when it is there.  It is allowing us to play very confidently.

    3.  People are understanding what types of shots they are supposed to take when.  We are not taking a lot of stupid shots early in the shot clock.

    4.  We did a pretty good job of mixing between bringing the double or not on the post ups.  I generally think we need to double mostly as college big men are not typically good passers.  Michigan St. did pass okay out of the doubles tonight though.

    5.  Michigan St did not play terribly bad.  That is key.  We beat them when they were not awful on the road.

    6. Jack came up large.  Going to be a good one I think.  Young guys in general showing we can be pretty good down the road.

    7.  Coaching has gotten much tougher.  We have started to play WAY better defense of late.  And while the offense is even more improved, the key to the whole thing is playing good defense.  Creates more run outs, which we are trying to get and I like.  We have several guys that can beat a guy one on one in transition rather easily.

We're really lucky they shot poorly from the stripe (12 of 21 = 57%.)

Sort of.  However, the guys that we put on the line are not very good free throw shooters.  They wouldn't project to make more than 13 or 14.  We did not allow any guards to shoot any of them.

Most minutes by a Husker player against MSU:  31 by 2 players.

1 scored 13 points on 50% shooting with 2 assists and 2 steals.

The other scored 4 points on 100% FT shooting and grabbed 8 rebounds.

Q:  What, besides leading the team in minutes tonight, do they have in common?

A:  Both true freshmen:  Glynn Watson and Michael Jacobson.

Oh, and another true freshman came off the bench to score 8 points on 66.7% from 3 and grabbed 6 rebounds.  I'm talking, of course, about Jack McVeigh.

My 3rd child was born this afternoon in time to watch his first husker hoops game, and boy it was a good one.  They kept taking punches and hitting back.  This has been a fun team to watch.  I'm willing to make sure the new kiddo is up for all the rest of the games if that's what it takes

    Yeah for another Husker!

Remember how Pardon went crazy on us a few weeks ago?  I thought we were in for a long season right there.  But you are right.  the coaches and players deserve a lot of credit for getting our interior defense and rebounding straightened out in a hurry.

Great points - the freshmen playing the way they did in East Lansing would be almost impossible to believe - or it would be if we hadn't seen all of them getting better and better in a hurry the past couple of weeks.

Especially Jacobson - great defense down low. Rebounded very well vs a lot of size and a lot of fresh bodies. 2 big FTs late. And I really thought he hit that 3 late in the game that would've all but sealed it, halfway down and then nearly got the big bounce to fall though too. I think he also caused the steal at 66-62 when it felt like it was getting away from us, and Tai took it coast to coast to push the lead back to 6. Huge game by Jacobson tonight.

Wow what a game!!! This team is definitely growing up. The game unfolded in a way that would have lead me to believe we lost by 20 points. Shavon misses the last 5 minutes of the first half and AW3 in foul trouble most of the game, but they keep finding ways to win. Tai, Glynn, and Jack stepped up and scored some points. Jacobsen and Jack rebounded their asses off and Shavon just went off!!! At first i would have been satisfied with 1-3 record during this four game stretch but now i fully expect a split and can fathom going 3-1.

I feel like we dominated the game really. Take away the 3 pt statistics and Mich State is not hanging around and our poor 3 pt shooting can definitely be attributed to AW3's foul trouble. Saturday is #AveryStrong day, it's a big name opponent (who we have yet to beat since joining the Big Ten), and we are blazing hot right now. I can only imagine the atmosphere!

It was driving me insane when people were saying fire Miles or that OWH writer said Samford had more talent! So I am really just soaking this up right now.

Huge win, but the team has to make sure this isn't the highlight of the season. However, I am 100% confident that Miles will have them ready to play on Saturday and, more importantly, the rest of the season. Go big red!!!

I neglected to mention Watson.  Good call Norm.  Just because he wasn't quite as aggressive in the 2nd half, does not diminish how important his first half production was to keep us in it during some potentially troubling times without White and Shields.  Tai was also big at the end of the first half in this regard.

Tonight was the win that provided a spark for something to play for for the rest of the season.  We have a legit beef to have something to play for every game from here on out.

So, how many more games before fans once again start suggesting Miles can't coach and might not be the guy?

What's our record since golfer3 started his "Chain Miles' Door" thread?

(It might not be accurate to describe golfer3 as a "fan."  At least not a Nebraska "fan.")

I think the one I heard most after Christmas break was "we never replaced Craig Smith".  Well, coach Smith was a very nice coach in his own right, but I think we can lay that theory to rest now that we have a 4 game winning streak.

And I am one who questioned whether our woes last year and slow start this year were signs that Craig Smith was a missing ingrediant. Quite simply, I was wrong.

He's not a 28 ppg player but he hasn't been a slouch in the B1G. We have game film on him now so we'll see how we do when we go on the road for the last game of the year which could be huge for both of us.

I find this kind of interesting...the game thread was started with the mention that Glynn was sick and his minutes would be limited.  That dude gutted it out!!!

Our freshmen are playa's.  They went into a hostile, fired up student section that really got their mojo going during the "clock issue" and grew up big time.  Man, I am still smiling.
