uneblinstu's post game chatter: vol 6, ed 6: UAB

Really disappointing effort, especially in the second half.

      - For all the talent that Pettaway possesses, he cost us at least 7 points today. His turnover on the inbounds play combined with the poor decision to take on the entire UAB defense which they blocked and turned into a wide open 3 for their best player may not have cost us the game, but it probably kept us from being within in striking distance at the end. Combine that with Smith's turnover at the end of the first half which led to a a couple of free throws and that's nine points just given away and instead of having a potentially seven or eight point lead at half, it was three. Who knows how the game changes if they go into the break up seven instead of three.

    - It may not have mattered considering how they forgot how to defend and rebound in the second half. I couldn't make heads or tails whether or not I was watching UMass or UAB there for a while. This is a huge issue if this team wants to make a step forward this year. Were out rebounded 41-28. I wonder what the numbers were at half, because they did ok in the first half. They just had no answer in the second.

    - I'd like to see Biggs play more and frankly, I thought we were more poised when Parker was on the floor. The starting five never was really able to get things going today.

    - I'd like to see Webster try and push the issue a bit more, too.

    - UAB shot 19-23 in the second half, I mean, c'mon.

    - I didn't watch this closely, but are teams trying to take Shields out of games because he's really struggled out of the gate these past two games. I know foul trouble has been a factor, but we need him to be productive.

    - Smith didn't have a great game today either.

    - Miles compared it to a a car spinning its wheels in the post game. They're trying and want to do well, but they're trying too hard right now and it's making things worse. This team has the talent to succeed and win both of these games, but their inexperience and eagerness is getting in the way right now. I still think this team will be better by the end of the season, but there's still a lot of work to do right now.

    - Gotta recognize Gallegos for playing through the bum knee.

I don't really have much more to add, just disappointed in the second half effort today. Hopefully they can get back up for Sunday and salvage one there.

Win sunday and move forward. Need to fix the defense by big ten play. My main concern is there no leader on this team. Gallegos is far too passive and Shields just isn't ready.

Looking that way. Missing the Ubel glue.

In time this stuff shakes itself out. And I'm sure it will with our squad. Having a tough tournament, but this is a very young team, so they'll hopefully learn from it and improve.

How they respond tomorrow will speak volumes to their makeup. Pride alone should kick in.

I don't know what to take from this game.  Lack of size and no post game seems to be a glaring weakness.  I thought we would defend on the perimeter better, maybe Chad Frazier is that good, 66 points in two games is impressive.  No time to panic but Georgia and/or Temple will not be a cure for the problems.  This tournament has probably tempered some optimism.

-Shields, Webster, and Petteway were 0-9 from 3 today. I think we are better when those guys attack the hoop.

-Pitchford isn't the player we had hoped he would be. He can't defend.

    -outrebounded 41-28

***** I don't think there is any real answer for our lack of size besides hoping that Miles starts recruiting legitimate big guys. I don't think this team is physical enough or big enough to be good. We may pull off some upsets because we have guys that can score, but defense may struggle all year.

I wouldn't be too anxious to take on Creighton.  Who is going to stop McDermott?

We have no chance to beat Creighton. McDermott can probably score as many points as he wants to in that one.

Did not seem like the team played with effort in last 2 games.  On defense, they stood still and "watched", not moving their feet, keeping their hands up; when played zone no one was cutting off passing lanes because flatfooted.  On offense, seemed more often than not that too many players stood around the perimeter and were just waiting to get the ball so they could jack a 3, especially when UAB played zone.

What am I missing?  Young inexperienced individuals have a lot to learn before they become a team this year, but the potential is there.  I think the way we played the last 2 games is representative of the way this season will play out - real choppy, but will pay off next year

This team has a bunch of talent but the discipline on defense must start Sunday! This team can score but we must defend if we will be succesful. Disappointing effort as we could have been 2-0 in charleston.

With these guys we might play out of our gourds and hold him to 1- 17 from the field and have him foul out. :)

1-17...bold talk considering we just allowed a team to score 56 points and shoot 83% in a half... ;)

I would not say "no" chance, but we have to improve.  Lets see how we face adversity not only this Sunday, but in the other 2 games leading up to the Creighton game as well.

If it was at PBA, I'd give us a puncher's chance. I just don't see things going well up there in Omaha, mostly because they never do. That's our first true road game and it will be loud. And with how this young team has handled itself mentally so far, I don't think we're due to pull the upset this year. Hope I'm dead wrong.

I did not get a chance to watch the game today, just listened off and on.  Did we play any zone today on defense?  I know Miles is a man coach all the way but if we can't keep teams out of the paint we might have to play it more and hope teams miss shots.  It will be interesting to see if Miles can get them to defend or if he gives in and plays more zone.

So is this going to take a freedom of information act request to the University?  Are they trying to hide the box score from us, hoping people just forget?  Do we need to contact Wikileaks?  Those bastards.

    NEVER  FORGET!!!
