    uneblinstu's post game chatter: ed 6, vol 28 - @ Illinois

      BhcrcX3CQAIk1eI.jpg

All good things must come to an end. Thoughts as I watched the game on the DVR. Hope they make sense. This doesn't burst the bubble.

      - Well, it looks like we missed Gallegos get into foul trouble, so there’s that.

      - Nice to see Benny hit a jumper.

      - Huskers didn’t fold when Illinois got out to an early lead. Didn’t expect they would, but nice to see.

      - Didn’t seem like an overly raucous atmosphere in Champane.

      - Illinois hit some shots.

      - Shields missed a couple at the rim he’s been finishing lately. Pitchford and Petteway missed a couple, too.

    - Nice little jumper by Rivers on the pump fake. First lead at 18-17.

    - Sounds like we missed Smith get off to a decent start.

    - Tied at 18

    - Couple of really ugly three’s from just about everyone...

    - Not a smart idea by Shields to try and take on 4 Illini players on the break late in the first half.

    - Really fortunate at the half to be down 3. Getting 17 from Rivers, Smith and Parker was a life saver. Think how ugly it could have been had they not chipped in.

    - 0/8 from 3 in the first half. Yikes!

    - Only 5 attempts from the line, not good either.

    - Good to see Petteway attack the rim right out of the break. Hit them both.

    - Took the lead again at 28-27 on the Pitchford dunk just a minute into the second half.

    - Illinois did a pretty decent job of defending in transition.

    - Illinios took the lead again at 29-28

    - Webster with a big 3. That was cool.

    - Gah, second chances for Illinois killing NU.

    - Rivers with a nice little take and finish at the rim. Strong.

    - Wow! What a save for Shields!

    - Lots of open 3’s for Illinois, they’re hitting them.

    - Not much movememt offensively at times.

    - Petteway just can’t hit anything tonight.

    - 8-0 run by Illinois

    - 5 quick points by Petteway to get back in the game.

    - Really needed to take advantage of that foul after Petteway’s jumper. Probably last chance to get back into the game...and then the turnover after the Illinois miss with a chance to cut it to six...

    - Illinios length and defense causing all sorts of trouble for NU tonight.

    - 14 turnovers ugh...

I think a player like Fuller could have helped tonight. I don't see him going 0-6 from deep in a game.

Everyone has bad nights. Fuller will have his share.
    Should have worded that differently.

I think he is the type of player who can help when absolutely no one is making anything. He just seems so consistent, so he can connect on 1 or 2 shots just so that the top is taken off the rim and others are a bit free-er.

Basically what a good shooter is supposed to do

That's the best part about next year.  We bring back almost everyone plus add guys like Fuller, Hammond, probably a Juco (or 3) and whatever guys Miles pulls out of thin air.

Perhaps this has been mentioned, but kudos to Groce and Illinois as a whole.  For multiple reasons, they stopped us from driving to the hoop and forced us to rely on an outside game that was very weak last night.  We have been adjusting in recent weeks to whatever was thrown at us, last night, we didn't/couldn't adjust, and paid the price.

Might I add, the adjustment would have been a strong post presence, something that is certainly lacking a bit this year.

It's like they had a week to prepare for us. ;)

It's very obvious that Nunn and Hill should be playing a lot of minutes for the Illini.

They bring a shooting and talent element to the team that was missing during their 8 game Big 10 skid.

Groce is a good coach.  He's bringing in good players.  The reason we're still talking about a possible NCAA bid and Illinois is talking about the NIT is because Miles figured out the winning rotation of his roster first.  Gotta love that.

They also got back on defense when they turned the ball over.

Kugler had some nice insight today on 1620 about Nnanna Egwu shading up into the lane to be the guy to stop/help keeping Petteway out of the lane.  Doesn't think Vonleh from Indiana has that same skill set so Indiana (and most teams) don't have a guy who can duplicate that.

    Other thoughts

    • He didn't think the pre-game shoot around showed the Huskers would struggle.
    • Thinks the Huksers are a legit top 6 B1G team
    • They need to get to the FT line to have success
    • He was in the US during the previous Nebraska loss so the end of the streak isn't his fault

Illinois knocked of Michigan St on the road today.

They have 17 wins, Michigan at home and then Iowa on the road.  Oh boy

Let's hope Michigan beats them, but then they beat Iowa. Then we are just 1 win away from 4th place (assuming Iowa also loses @ Michigan State, and Ohio State loses @ Indiana OR vs. Michigan State).

If the Illini somehow knock-off Mich & Iowa to go w/ W's over Neb & MSU in a 4-game stretch, their dancin' shoes could be warmin' up w/ 1st & 2nd rd victories in Indy.
