uneblinstu's post game chatter: ed 6, vol 21 - Indiana

    - Man, I thought when we got up 7-2 it was gonna be off to the races. Then Indiana settled into the zone and we got a slop fest and we had no idea how to handle it. Miles called it tentative. That's about right. We stopped attacking the rim.

    - Completely opposite in the second half. They got that intensity back on defense. I was suprised Indiana didn't open the 2nd half in the zone. That gave the Huskers the opportunity to get back in the game and they took it. To cut it from 13 to five before the first media segment was HUGE! Indiana really had no answer from there.

    - That turnaround from the Shavon charge (which I think we caught a break on that one) to the Gallegos three and one was the turning point of the game. That was a seven point swing. Game changed.

    - How about Hawkins?! Huge minutes. He might be the guy to get Biggs' minutes and that shot to tie it at 46 sent the place into the stratosphere. Big time shot for the kid. If he keeps playing well, that could spell trouble for Parker's playing time.

    - We looked like we had better athletes than Indiana.

    - Hoosiers have some flaws of their own. They lack a shooter, big time. Our zone in the second half really stymied them.

    - Vonleh is talented, but he basically disappeared tonight.

    - Crowd of the year. Excellent stuff tonight.

    - Petteway's stepback 3 was unfair. If he can hit that shot, he'll be unguardable and he's pretty much there as it is...

Alright, that's all I have time for tonight...

Wins do matters but you still look for improvements in some areas. Not to take away anything as I am ecstatic with the win but I saw the Purdue/ohio state/psu final minutes road game performances in the first half. That concerns me as we head on the road. We must limit the mistakes and attack.

We have the ability to get to the rim during these scoring droughts rather than settle for weak jump shots. Like to see tai, shavon and to do that more when times get tough.

OK - good win, nice comeback and all that.  I realize we won and had a really nice comeback so why am I so depressed having watched that mess. Playing  Indiana made me think about how Bob Knight cared more about how the game was played and how his team performed than wins and loses. We won because we stepped up as a team in the second half but it seemed more to me that Indiana couldn't stop turning the ball and bank shots aside, can't shoot the rock. I'm glad we won but we had more poor plays than good ones. It just seems to me that Indiana deserved to lose more than we deserved to win. This is one of the many reasons I don't have my own team anymore. Big win and I'd have to fake the big smile with the parents post-game. Put on the happy face with the team and then boy do I need a couple beers to get through the game tape. Not trying to rain on anyone's parade or first two conference wins in a row party, but we were not a good basketball team tonight. It is always better to learn from a win than a lose (losing tonight would have been crushing) but we go a lot to learn. Plenty of positive highlights to emphasis but we have a long way to go to be a consistently good basketball team.

Agree with a lot of it, however Indiana did play hard and pretty well on defense.  They mucked the game up on the road a bid, which can be a recipe for success, similar to us at Penn St until we pissed it away.  Both teams played pretty hard.   It meant something to both clubs.  So the effort was there.  Two young clubs so there are going to be some moments of poor basketball.  And I agree it was not a beauty contest, nor did I ever think the potential was there for it to be one.

Not playing good and still beating teams like Indiana... I'll take it. Sure we didn't play we'll... But we got the W and that's all that matters

That was my point. For fans the win is all that matters. I always worried more about the execution. Makes wins like these a lot less fun for me and that sucks. I'm sure it's not all that matters for Miles either, but he is getting paid well to worry about how poorly we played. I don't get anything but a bad feeling in my stomach.

I'm a coach too. I know what your talking about... I guess it's about how you look at it. Sure they will certainly discuss the negatives, but the fact that we can play so much better and we still got the W is huge. When it comes down to it... As crappy as a coach may feel after the game... The win is sometimes all that matters.

Apparently B1G doesn't have Newcomer of the Year, but Petteway could certainly rise to 2nd and (possibly) 1st team all-conference w/ significant improvement by the Huskers in the W-L record and Terran's steady, outstanding play (of course).

Somewhere Billy Gillespie is nine rum and comes deep saying, "he was just a role player"

Those 3-10:30 practices really wore him out at tech or look what he could have done for them;)

That is why you need to have the 24 hour rule. I do, only worry about the game we are playing now and then only think about it for 24 hours and on to the next one.

I know we aren't really that good but I love the hustle, heart and how they play for each other and the people who are there for them.

I'm just a fan that as I have gotten older hasn't thought to much about the little things just if we win or lose. Makes the rest of my life easier. :)

Sure, Nebraska is flawed; most fans understand that the Huskers need another big man and a PG. But, it's been a great sight to see the "Us always" mantra emerge amid turmoil that could have derailed the progress this past week.

Enjoyed witnessing the fight that the team displayed in the 2nd half in overcoming their own shortcomings from the 1st half to make this evening a bit of a roller-coaster ride... On to the next challenge (@MI) in the EKG season for OUR team~ GBR!

I've seen posts on here about the students needing to step up. They have been (although I wish they would have started early in the pre conference games), now the rest of us need to step up. Yes we are loud a lot...but I think we need to get the rest of the place to start joining in with the students. They are still the standout noise makers.

This was, no question, the tale of two halves:

    - In the first half, the team was larthegic, in the second half they were intense

    - In the first half the crowd was sitting and half asleep, in the second half we awakened

    - In the first half the defense played with their hands, in the second half, they moved their feet

    - In the first half our offensive spacing was horrible, in the second half we spread the floor and penestrated

    - In the first half we played mostly man defense, in the second we played a lot of zone.

Point being, the biggest accomplishment is that we adjusted at half and came out and beat a pretty athletic and pretty good Indiana team.  Are they final 8 contenders -- no -- but they are a pretty salty Big Ten team.

Yeah, my vocal cords could use a rest as well.  That's what summer is for.

    Two observations:

Indiana had six men on us the entire first half - literally.  Get Tom Crean off the  floor!

Leslee Smith is a stud.  Is he perhaps the most underrated player in the league?  Great job on shutting down Noah tonight.

Easy to forget Walter.  He played stud like defense on him as well.

I should have acknowledged him, thanks CWG.

Dean, I totally understand where you are coming from.  But for as bad as IU played, don't you think the same could be said about NU in the 1st half?  Then for us to come out and play the way we did in the 2nd half is a great sign of making adjustments at halftime and using them to get the win.  My favorite tweet after the game said something along the lines of:

"Breaking news.  A UNL coach made halftime adjustments for the 1st time in 10 years that actually lead to a win."

    Was pretty good.

To the coaches who have posted.  Sometimes you have to find victories where you can.  Small improvements in things you've worked on or a team becoming more poised.

So, here's a positive takeaway.  At NO TIME in the last 5 minutes of the game did the team get rattled or start pressing trying to make something happen on the offensive end.  I can remember games past and years past where we've run out to big leads early in the 2nd half and gradually the other team starts chipping away at the lead and suddenly you can't get a bucket on the offensive end.  You get tentative and hesitant and the shots don't fall and you make critical mistakes.

That kind of thing happened at Penn State.

It did NOT happen last night.  Every singe close-up camera shot of a player on the floor that last several minutes they looked calm and composed and totally down to business.  Never got rattled.  Never let Indiana go on a run.  Sealed the deal.  Compare that to PSU.  Or even Minnesota.

    That's a win right there.

I don't think he's in the running for POTY.  Probably not first team either.  The league is just too deep.  Maybe 2nd team.  We'll have to see.  But he could easily be pre-season 1st team all conference going into next season.

You're right about Indiana.  There is a reason they're now 1-4 in road games.  They're a young team who can't shoot and can't finish.  At half time I didn't think the game was out of reach if we simply played well.

There are going to be lots of games where we don't play well...where we don't come close to reaching our potential.

Don't you think we look a lot more like a team than we did at the beginning of the year?  Doesn't this look like a team that has grown from the South Carolina tournament?

That big Pitchford 3 towards the end of the 3 was set up by Petteway realizing the shot clock was running down, seeing Pitch coming towards him, going to his left, and when the defenders went with him (they should of) he threw it to a wide open Pitchford instead of taking a contested shot.  That was a thing of beauty.

We had ONE FT attempt in the first half.

We ended up with 19.  That's a change in aggression.

According to the B1G website, he's third behind Stauskas and Gary Harris from MSU.  Stauskas is also tops in the league in 3-pt % and 3-ptrs made and he's also 7th in the league in assists and 4th in assist:turnover ratio.  I think he's in the driver's seat for POTY honors.

Then, if the 1st team is 5 players, they'll probably stick someone on there from each of the top 3 or 4 teams in the league and, I mean, there's just a lot of very good players in the league who probably get a little more pub or cred or whatever you want to call it because they aren't from Nebraska.

We have to win some games first.  The best player on a mediocre team isn't going to garner all-conference first team honors even if he is among the league leaders in scoring.

You're right. I was looking at conference games only, which he does lead. If he keeps up this pace, the Huskers will continue to win at home at least. If that happens, he'll be on the first team. The conference is deep, but it is not as deep as it was last year, especially with players like Craft falling way short of expectations

Didn't Tim Frazier go 1st team big ten two years ago? I think he won scoring title but penn state wasn't very good.

    I'm just saying there's a chance
