uneblinstu's post game chatter: ed 5, vol 32 - Ohio St., Big Ten Tourney

      Kuge bomb

If this is where it ends, there really wasn't much more that we could have asked for from this team.

      - I went to the N-Zone again, not as big of a crowd as yesterday, but it was still a lot of fun, especially when they started hot. Kinda turned into a big support group as things got ugly in the 2nd.
      - This game started about as well as anyone in red could have asked for.
      - After getting up 14-6, OSU woke up and it was basically game over.
      - Shields does nothing but impress with every single game that passes. Excited to see how he develops.
      - Thought OSU did a really nice job of taking Talley and Gallegos out of the game.
      - Ubel really played well down the stretch of the season. Had another big game today.
      - Rivers was shut out today. He really improved a this season a lot more than anyone really expected him to. If he can make a similar progression from this year to next, he could be a nice little player.
      - 3/19 from 3 and 15 turnovers not gonna get it done.

    - We've had this conversation before, but I hope Parker stays. He'd be a valuable piece to have on the bench. His minutes aren't likely to be big next year, but he can have a role if he can get more comfortable in Miles' system which should lead to some better decisions. His role won't be scoring points, but he's decent at finishing at the rim and is quick in transition. He ran the break pretty well, too. Those are valuable skills in what I think Miles wants to do.

    - I really thought Andre would have more than 2 minutes in this game.

    - On the post game, they were talking like the CBI was out of the question. I hope that's not the case, I'd really like to see this team play another game or two.

Well, not many expected the Huskers to do as much as they did this season. They won 15 games, five in conference play, and one in the tournament with basically 5 players. That's unbelievable impressive. I'm fairly confident the team will be more talented next year. I'm fairly confident the conference won't be better than it is this year. I don't know if that will translate into more wins or not, but I'm excited to find out.

Personally, I still think we need to beat the bushes and find a big.  The thought of going through another undersized season scares me.  You really have to overachieve in order to compete against teams that are taller and more athletic at the big spots.  And that's what tOSU is.  At the big spots, they just have better athletes.  Skilled guys to boot.  Trying to match up with that next year without Ubel and Almeida (such as he was) scares me a bit.  I'm sure Terran Petteway is a terrific athlete, but c'mon.

This team had to be about spent.  And not just from playing a game yesterday.  I'm talking from playing 35 minutes per starter practically all season long, and certainly all conference season.  Had to take a toll.  We hung with tOSU for the better part of a half but fatigue had to have played a factor in not being able to hang with them longer.  They were fresher.  What are you going to do?

Give Miles a lot of credit for coaching 'em up this year.  Beat nearly everyone's expectations.  Sequel should be interesting.  Hopefully it's not like the Indiana Jones series.

    Still need another big man.

When Andre was in the game today we immediately lost our lead and rhythm in half court offense. Two immediate turnovers as well and I was figuring he'd be benched for the rest of the game and he was.

I, for one, am glad this season is over. It played out about like I thought it would with a few individual highlights (Gallegos, Shields, Rivers) and solid senior performances by Ubel and Talley. We closed Bob Devaney with our best game, won a tournament game and never had a shot at making the NCAA. Doc might have come close to the same record with the players he had lined up, but the expectation for next year would have been nil in that case. With what Miles has established so far, I think most of us here can hardly wait for next season to begin.

I haven't seen any comment on Benny's alley oop toss to Ray, so I thought i'd mention it.  Ray was pretty beat down by this game and struggled, but that was a sweet play.  Good pass by Benny, and Ray has incredible hops.  He was so high above the rim.   Fun to see us make that play, since there weren't a lot of them this year as we aren't particularly athletic.
