    Shamiel Stevenson is N

      Huskers land 6'6" G/F transfer from Pitt/Nevada

Nebraska gets the verbal commit from the 230+ lb Stevenson who has made two moves already in his college career due to coaching changes.

“We are excited to add Shamiel to our program. He brings a lot of versatility and physicality to our roster. With his size, strength and wingspan, Shamiel fits in perfectly in our system with his ability to play several positions. He also possesses the toughness and maturity needed to play in the Big Ten.” - Coach Hoiberg

The former 3 star and prep school teammate of DeAndre Ayton chose Pittsburgh and coach Kevin Stallings out of high school.  Stevenson was a major contributor his freshman year, starting 13 games and averaging 8.7 ppg while shooting 37.5% from 3 and getting to the line at an impressive rate. (His FTR metric was comparable to James Palmer)

Stevenson stuck on with new coach Jeff Capel but was relegated to the end of the bench, seeing action in only 4 games. Shamiel decided to transfer mid-season and chose Nevada.  With former Wolfpack head coach Eric Mussleman leaving for Arkansas Stevenson decided to move on as well.  Currently he's eligible after the fall semester but will most likely pursue a waiver to become immediately eligible. After this season he should have two years remaining. With his size Stephenson looks to slot in defensively as a PF or Center in Fred Hoiberg's 'positionless' basketball team.

    What the crap?!?!?

The possible takeaways / rationales for this:

First, it appears that they didn't think that getting his sophomore season of eligibility back was realistic.  Otherwise, if your choice is if he's eligible at semester and still a sophomore vs eligible next year as a junior, it's a no-brainer.

Second, they think that he is more valuable with two full seasons of eligibility in years 2 and 3 vs a semester and a half starting this year.  Looking at the schedule, there's 2 non-conference games after finals, that they should win either way.  And looking at the conference schedule, in the 18 second semester games how many more do they win with Stevenson than without him?  Realistically, 1 to 4, probably 2 or 3.  So they'd waste a year of eligibility to maybe get 2 or 3 more wins in year 1.

The downside is, you'd expect that they need him more this year than they'll need him in year 3.

We've been working under the impression that his transfer clock started when the transferred from Pitt. Perhaps it started when he transferred from Nevada which would only give him two years regardless of when he started.

ok..so.....If he's eligible for the entire season can we do over any losses we had prior to his actually playing?  Seems a BS move on the NCAA's part (Do NCAA rules prevent me from saying that?) to make a player eligible for the entire season part of the way through.

so then...at what point do we prefer that the NCAA declines the waiver and we just have three sit-outs instead of two?  Gotta be pretty soon right?

I'd say in my personal opinion if he isn't granted eligibility in time for the Cayman Islands trip then I'd rather just have him sit out and get two full years out of him after that.

Starting to feel like Nebraska screwed this up

How can we be in a position to judge whether or not that's the case?  Looks to me like we were gonna get this kid for 2 years no matter how you slice it.  Either that was gonna be starting this year or wait until next year.  Pretty cut and dried really.

We, as fans, may not have been privy to all of the details regarding Shamiel's recruitment/eligibility...but are we entitled to them?

I agree with this sentiment as there are likely many layers to this onion we are not aware of.  My hope is that Nebraska went down the path they did as a result of conversations they had with the NCAA before they submitted their waiver.  I still hold out hope that because Stevenson played in 4 games for Pitt that the NCAA is waiting for Nebraska to complete 4 games before declaring him eligible for the rest of the year as a Sophomore.  That seems the most fair to me and for Stevenson given his circumstances.  The NCAA is often illogical so maybe this is just a pipe dream.

If everything was cut and dry then why hold the waiver submission for so long?  Seems to reason that had we submitted our request earlier we would already have an answer. If the purpose of holding it was to increase our chances of it being granted for this year it would seem that it's already cost Stevenson 3 games.

Nature abhors a vacuum. Either the University can fill that void with information or else we can fill it with speculation. I'd prefer the former but that doesn't mean I dismiss the latter.

"2 years no matter how you slice it".  I know this isn't going to happen, but lets say that the last game of the season the NCAA comes in and says hes eligible for the 2019-2020 season.  Would that mean he's only actually going to play one year?

I considered that, but I would imagine if they thought there would be a risk of that happening, they'd forgo the waiver request and just redshirt him, no?

Honestly, I don't have any idea how this process should take place, but given the NCAA's capricious nature (or at least it seems that way) I also don't think I'll be willing to just automatically concede any outcome that isn't in our favor is due to incompetence on our AD's part either.  I'm sure they are *very* concerned about making sure they do everything they can to be in the best interest of both the team and Shamiel.

For me personally, it has me questioning what our thinking was now.  I was under the impression that the waiver was to get him another year of eligibility and he would still have two years after this.  If he was denied a waiver, then he would have 2.5 years because he was available in December.  However, if it is two years regardless, that changes things for me.  We submitted the waiver way later.  Can you even deny a waiver if you sit out too long?  For instances, can you deny if they come back in the middle of January and say "you can play."  If it was always going to be either two years this year or two years next  year, I think the waiver should have been submitted way earlier.  The hiccup for me is coming in the fact that I thought he would have 2 years after this regardless.

Fair enough.  But I don't know what information the University is even at liberty to share in these cases.  Falling prey to speculation via social media (or any other media for that matter) is kind of a caveat emptor situation to me.

I guess that Shamiel's case is probably going to fall somewhere along the bell curve of best case/worst case outcome and all I can do as a fan is hope for the best.  I really would just like to get the ruling from the NCAA as soon as we can and be done with it.

Based on my understanding the options are

    1. waiver is granted and last year is his redshirt so he is a Sophomore this year.

    2. Waiver is denied and last year was his sophomore year so he redshirts this year instead of wasting the junior year on a meaningless half season and starts next year as a junior.

The waiver is for the additional year it isn’t a cut and dry 2 years.  Guessing they have to substantiate why the 4 games at Pitt shouldn’t count which is the hold up.  Not as clear cut as the injury to Cope.

Just because he would be "eligible" at that time it doesn't mean they have to play him.  He has a redshirt available to use so he can sit this year and have 2 years left to play.

Has anyone else said this? Is there any chance he misunderstood this?

Robin just posted an article mentioning the waiver is still pending, but no mention of this.

Didn't he leave after 4 games?

So, technically they wouldn't have to apply for a waiver, because he would just be eligible for 2nd semester. No waiver needed, but this would be his junior year.

So, it seems to me we want him to be a junior next year, either by redshirting the 2nd semester or getting the waiver for him to be a sophmore this season.

Ok, thoroughly confused but I think Evan Bland is wrong as he states that Stevenson will be a redshirt sophomore next year?  That can't possibly be right?  In any event, I am happy to drink this koolaid during the season!
