    Juwan Gary is N

Alabama transfer Juwan Gary announced via his instagram that he has committed to play for Nebraska.  Gary was a sophomore this season and the 6'6" 218# forward will have two years of eligibility left.

Gary projects to be a 3 or 4 with the Huskers and is known for his defensive ability, driving ability, and energy.  A history of injuries have slowed down Gary, but he started 19 games for Alabama despite an ankle injury and a facial injury which caused him to wear a protective mask. Originally a 2019 HS graduate, Gary spent his first year redshirting due to a torn ACL.

Fred Hoiberg on the addition of Juwan Gary:  "Juwan adds a different dimension to our roster with his combination of athleticism and versatility. He plays with physicality and can be used all over the floor.  Juwan also has the experience of playing in two NCAA Tournaments and winning an SEC title in 2021, which gives him the understanding of what it takes to be successful at the highest level."

Gary is from Colombia, South Carolina where he was a 4 star recruit coming out of high school.

My biggest thing about juwan that I love is he doesn't need the ball to be impactful. He'll crash the offensive glass, cut when there's openings, or set screens. His athleticism pops off the charts though.

In contrast, his 3 ball leaves a bit to be desired. I wonder who they play him with at the 5? Maybe start Wilhelm at the 4 and have Gary be the first sub for Walker and slide Wilhelm down? If his 3 ball can get to at least 30%, this isn't an issue though.

Also, I've got a former coworker from Alabama who moved back home a while back.  I texted him to get his take on Juwan and this was his response:

"Gary is a good pickup.  He is not a game changer but he does all the hustle, grind work.  He reminds me of Herb Jones that plays for the Pelicans now.  Glue guy that will help the team win."

Considering our team, that sounds like a game changer to me.

To play devil's advocate to the negative discussions on Juwan, I don't recall tons of positive talk about JPJ or Petteway. Their numbers didn't wow anyone. However, they're probably 2 of our top 3 players since PBA opened! Let's give JG a chance!

The questions have been about his social media presence and whether he best fits our needs. I don't recall anyone questioning whether he was a good player.

Some think our biggest needs are a PG and a scorer, and he's neither. If you think our biggest needs are effort and rebounding, then he's an outstanding pickup.

I like this one a lot. Not a shooter but for some reason shooting doesn't travel when guys come here lately. Defense and effort travels anywhere and I think a lot of guys on this team will be a lot better with a bulldog on the court with them.

Still not seeing anyone who can run the show and am not seeing a lot of 90+ scoring nights yet so defense is gonna have to step way way up.

We were a total disaster on rebounding and defense last year and Juwan looks to be good at both. Embrace him.

He is the type of guy we needed on last year’s team.  A guy who doesn’t need his.  Like doc alluded to…we had too many guys who wanted their shots.

I think an argument could be made that rebounding is our biggest need.  I’m not gonna disagree with the point guard take but both this guy and griesel seem to be pretty good scorers from inside the arc which should help open up outside shooting better…in theory.

We lead the nation in saying the right things in the summer.

I'd say in the last three years, we lead the nation in the biggest gulf between what we say in the summer and what we produce in the winter. So, we got that going for us. Which is nice.

I put together a film study on Juwan Gary's abbreviated first season as a Husker. He's a limited but useful player who is pretty darn effective in his areas of strength.

Excellent work, appreciate the write up.  In watching the highlights you attached, I noticed that most all of the 3s that Gary made were from the corner.  Do you have stats on what percentage of his 3 point shots were from the corner, and what percentage he shot on 3s from the corner as opposed to the wing or top of the key?

Missing a few here, but this is what I have:

    - Left Corner: 5-11 (45.5%)

    - Left Wing: 3-19 (15.8%)

    - Top of Key: 1-4 (25%)

    - Right Wing: 5-15 (33.3%)

    - Right Corner: 0-4 (0%)
