    Dalano Banton is N

Huskers land 6'8" G/F freshman transfer from Western Kentucky

      D5f9UOfXkAAxObv.jpg

The lengthy PG from Toronto nearly recorded a triple-double vs Wisconsin last year. Lack of playing time played a factor in the transfer and Banton has 3 years of eligibility left after he sits out this year as a transfer.

Coach Fred Hoiberg on Dalano Banton

    Quote

"Dalano brings a lot to the table with his combination of size and skill set. At 6-foot-8, he will be a tough matchup for opponents, as we can take advantage of his size and passing ability. He has shown the ability to play at a high level and having a year to grow and develop in our program will put Dalano in position to make an immediate impact when he becomes eligible.”

Maybe not quite the shooting numbers you'd hope to see in a Hoiberg offense. But he has a year to sit out and work hard on that shot.

Here's the comparison to Roby's freshman numbers.  Western Kentucky went 20-14 in 2019, Nebraska went 12-19 in 2017.

    In Dalano Banton's commitment photo, he's wearing #45. ?

There is a table in the Hendricks that is full of Nebraska gear/jerseys and guys just get to pick what they want for a photo shoot if they care about that.

If someone had some time it'd be interesting to see all of the visit/commit shots put in a single thread to see which jerseys are more popular

So as a sit out transfer is he eligible for the Spain trip? Will he attend but just not play?

I know Anton Gill did not play in the game when we to Italy. But idk if thats bc he is ineligible or just a coaching decision not to play him bc he wasnt playing the upcoming season anyway.

The prior two guys both had #3. In the past I can also recall #14 and #23 fairly recently as well.

Nice article on Banton. 6'9 point guards aren't common in the Big Ten? Whod'a thunk?

The game against Wiscy where he almost had a triple-double was not in 2015.

But, other than that, nice words about our main man. He should excel in the facilitator role.

Is he a quick leaper?  Would be nice if he had shot blocking ability to go with his unique skill set.  The more guys that are able to help protect the rim, while allowing us to stay relatively positionless is huge.

Not a lot of data but his block numbers at W. Kentucky are comparable to Copeland's here. Wouldn't say it's a strong point but he'll get a few if he's in the paint and will really help to extend our range when if he's out on the perimeter.

Jalen Rose. That’s probably about it.

I'm not comparing Banton to Lebron, but I think they'll have some similar point-forward roles.  My hope is that Banton has enough weight to guard the 4.  If he does, he's going to be an absolute terror on offense while goofball traditional B1G 4s attempt to guard him on the perimeter.  If he's quick enough to guard the 2-3, they may run the offense through him in the high post or starting on the block.  Either way, it's good for the good guys.   He's gonna be a problem.

I hope/think he'll be in the post a good amount, regardless of who's guarding him. Analytically, the three point shot off of a pass out of the post is one of the most efficient shots in basketball. Presumably because it's often a stand-still catch and shoot, while already facing the basket. Jay Wright took that metric and ran with it all the way to a national championship a few years ago, with Jalen Brunson posting up and kicking it out to Mikal Bridges and others on the perimeter. Hoiberg is all about analytics, and having a 6'9" guy be your best passer on the team should be a huge asset. Of course, Banton needs to be a threat to score in the post for it all to work. From what we saw last year in the scrimmage and in Italy, it appears he can finish around the basket pretty well.
