unelinstu's postgame chatter: vol 15, ed 19: Ohio State

    Winning is fun.

Some clutch free throws down the stretch. Was also interesting to see freshmen Oleg, Dawson & Lawrence and sophomore Wilcher the group to make an important push late in the game.

The strength of the B1G metric wise is closer to last year, where 17-14 Michigan got a dancing card. IF we finished our regular season 7-5 to get to 17-14, I'm guessing we would be showing up on a lot of bubble lists.

The biggest difference there of course is the name on the jersey.  Michigan can get 17 wins and garner attention from the committee.  We cannot.  Also, last year Michigan was in the 30's in KenPom by the end of the season.  If we got to 17 wins, I would expect to see us somewhere in the 50's.

The problem is, who you are matters.  And who we are is a program that frankly doesn't matter.

Our ratings won't be good enough to get in with 17 wins, but you're right we'd be at least in consideration on the bubble. We'd pry have to get to 20 to be in.

Nah— 19 is a lock with the resume we’d have.  17-18 is bubble territory.  I even think 18 would be right side of bubble.

It’s also going to be about WHO we beat.  We need that WOW win.  Beating PSU X2, NW, Maryland X2, Minny and like Illinois or Wisco isn’t going to move the needle a ton.

But winning @Rutgers, @Michigan, against MSU, or sweeping Iowa would open eyes more.

Honestly, we should just plan on winning 4 games in a row from March 9-12.  That would solve the debate.

Great game last night. Offense was clunky for both teams in the first half, moreso OSU, who I thought missed some EASY bunnies.

-Young guys stepped up a ton. Dawson got aggressive and decisive off the catch, which is all he needs to be doing. Can't be indecisive when you catch the ball. Lawrence is a grinder. Not flashy, or really athletic, but he picks his spots very well and the confidence with him is growing. Blaise I have admittedly not been all that impressed with. Defense and rebounding are solid, but not good enough to make up for him looking lost on offense. Oleg seems to have stolen his spot in the rotation at Purdue, and it carried over last night. Loved that he was aggressive on that layup attempt and went up strong with it. Forced a turnover on a post up near the baseline also. In game reps will get these guys confidence, which is huge for next year.

-OSU looked bad last night, but our defense deserves a lot of credit also. Sensabaugh is a next level guy next year, and Dawson did as good of a job as I could've hoped on him. Towards the end of the game, I looked up and was surprised he had 18. McNeil was the one who hurt us more in my opinion.

Penn State is a VERY good team. Jalen Pickett is an easy 1st team all big ten, and if he keeps this up could be on an all american team. The ONE thing they don't have though is great post play. They play a freshman right now in that spot and rotate in a few guys, and at times play Lundy there. Walker SHOULD have a great game. But, they are deadly on offense. Funk can light it up, Dread has been a good shooter his entire career, and they have another shooter there also. Don't know how to feel about this one in all honesty. NW however will be coming off playing their first game since January 15th. Should be a bit of rust for what is a very bad offensive team.

I'm very much looking forward to the rest of the year.

Agree on Penn State. Pickett was in the National POY conversation until Penn St lost 3 out of the last 4. I've watched them play twice - @Illinois and vs. Indiana - and in those games they looked as good as about anyone I've seen this year.

Penn St has been posting Pickett and playing Dredd at the 5.  Dredd will stand in the corner waiting for an open three.  I wonder how FH will counter that.  Wild guess that Dredd will be flopping every time Walker breaths on him.

I marvel at the optimism on this board about possible post season play.  I just hope we play hard, are competitive and win a few more games.

When you haven't sniffed post season play since before COVID was even a thing, 10-9 gives you quite the buzz.  LOL.

I'm wondering if this changes the narrative at all that there is no hope for next year if Fred is retained because we lose Sam, Derrick, & Bando. If those 3 young guys continue to improve, add a healthy Gary & Keita, plus Keisei, Wil, Lloyd, and whatever newcomers we bring in, and there isn't any reason we couldn't have a competitive team next year.

I've been dubious about the "complete flip" comments I keep hearing. Filling Walker's role will be a very, very tall task. He leaves a giant hole, but Kieta and Wilhelm will be a big part of that equation. It's also a big ask for two or three freshmen to be asked to fill the PG role. Probably need a transfer for that spot. More in the SG mold and not AV type. They have a lot of solid role players for next year, they need to find a dude, though. If they do, it could be a fun year next season.

That said, I'm not sure I'd bank on Lloyd being here. A player of his expectation almost never redshirts. Maybe he'll be the exception, but I don't think I'd hold too tightly onto that one.

HB posted in a different thread that Lloyd is locked in. Consider him as N as anyone else on the roster.

I wonder how McPherson is doing?? He’s actually about the same size as Bandoumel and could be that lock down defender on the perimeter next year. I think he’s kind of been forgotten w his injuries…

He is typically out on the court with Rameal (and now Juwan) during pregame.  I see no brace and he appears to be moving around freely...typically with a smile on his face.  The dude has been here two years.  He will basically be a 20 year old freshman.

As an aside, don't go to sleep on Jacobson either.  He could sneak into the mix as well.

Prior to missing one at the end of the game, Keisei had made 29 consecutive FTs dating back to last season at Purdue where he missed the first after being fouled on a fast break at the end of the game.

Jack Moore holds the Nebraska record at 39 consecutive in 1982

He’ll turn 22 during the season next year

Was really disappointed to see Keisei miss that free throw.   Had hopes he would get through the whole year without any misses.   Not 100% sure but I watched a little bit of the game off my DVR later and I think the announcers said the kid from Ohio State had not missed any all year either - until he missed one early in our game - and then both off the technical.
