Here's a thought I've had bouncing around my head the past couple of weeks. Back when Biggs signed there was a lot of hope that he would be the local kid to come in and resurrect the program. As we all know, that didn't happen. But Shields is kinda everything we've been looking for. I mean, he wasn't born and raised in the state of Nebraska, but KC really isn't that far away, he's a legacy kid, who's skilled at basketball and super smart. He may as well be local.

Had to clear out some of the old guard. He'll get on lists to start next season. I'd bet Petteway is pre season POY, Shavon could find himself on the 2nd team to start the season.

    This.

Only Gary Harris made the 1st team from the pre-season poll.  That meant a bunch of guys who eventually would make 2nd & 3rd teams.

Shields has got to be a hard player to simulate in practice. His game is so amorphous. It's not angular. He's like plastic man around the rim, and also uses the spin move a lot. He's deceptively quick too.

    I really like this description.

Shavon has looked exceptional over the past several games.  But he did struggle early on, likely due to injury.  I certainly love what I have been seeing, but then again, I have really liked this kid from the day he stepped on campus.

I think it's safe to say he's in a bit of a funk right now. Mentally, he doesn't look all too confident and appears pretty hesitant out there.

On the postgame show, Coach mentioned that it was "pretty obvious" Shavon was playing hesitant, reliving some of his missed shots, and passed up a couple of wide open shots, only to dribble into contested shots.  He later mentioned he thinks Shavon is "overthinking" the game and that he just needs to get going again.

I really think a lot of our struggles offensively are solved if he can get back to the Shavon that was a 3 point threat and also could attack the rim and draw fouls.  I miss the 18 ppg Shavon was giving us, but I really miss his poise and confidence.

I accept the award for the most obvious thread/post of the week....

get back to the Shavon that was a 3 point threat

He's a guy who shoots 2-4 3s a game and has made 31.7% of them in his career.

The 3 ball is more to keep people honest or if he's open than his main offensive weapon.

Didn't Shavon have a similar funk early last year, looked like the sophomore slump caught him, then come conference, he slowed down, played under control, and became an "and1" machine?

He seems to be playing faster than his body. He has smooth moves and good court awareness, but he's playing like he's holding the turbo button, rather than using feints and patience he showed last year. I think a big part of it is the full-court pressure that we are not coping well with. It has us playing on a 24 or less second shot clock and the team doesn't have the time to reverse the ball, and get him in matchups where he can jab step, spin back, toss out, move off, reposition, receive and drive on a defender still catching up. (which is what I remember from last year.) Now it seems like the ball is coming to him late in the clock, with little disruption in the defense, and he's trying to put the ball on the floor against set defenders.

What's up with him catching the ball, and dribbling up and down the baseline and eventually picking up his dribble and either

    a) getting it swatted out of bounds

    B) throwing it away

    c) making a pass to a teammate near midcourt, which basically starts our offense over again

I agree, I think he's playing too fast for his body and it just seems he's out of control.  He needs to develop a Josh Mitchell mentality and not remember every missed shot.

Seems to me that part of all his dribbling all over the place comes from others not getting open.  What happened to proper spacing and moving the ball quickly around the perimeter for an open shot?  I haven't seen us do that with any consistency for a long time.

Yes, Shavon tweaked his knee in the scrimmage and was a little bit hobbled during the non-con last year.

the defenses we have played certainly muck things up for him, as well as cincy. Hawaii, and Cincy both play a trapping mixture of matchup zone, and LMU played some weird zone, he'll be fine in BIG Ten play when its more man on man and the lane opens up, he can go back to being a And1 Machine

Shavon will be fine. I think his game is much better when NU has both a low-post presence & Pitch popping the 3-ball because the Huskers can space the floor so that Shavon can play 'free'. Without that inside-outside deal, Shields can't seem to drive the lane on the clear-out or even in the course of the offense. And, I believe that Shavon's been dinged up a bit, which also occurred early on last season. Like I wrote earlier, Shavon will be fine. Which I also wrote early on last season... GBR

I fully expect Shavon to work himself out of his slump/funk.  When he does, the team will improve exponentially on offense.  Walt is now playing better the past two or three games.

Yes he has, and I'm very happy to see it.  I think that dunk last night did him a world of good.  We need a confident Walt if we intend to get anywhere this season.
