No. 12 Huskers Look to Rebound in Annual Battle with Bluejays

The No. 12 Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to road action Thursday when the Huskers head to Omaha for their annual clash with Creighton.

Tip-off between the Huskers and Bluejays in the 40th meeting between the two teams is set for 8 p.m. at D.J. Sokol Arena.

Nebraska and Creighton have played each other in women’s basketball every season since 1983-84 campaign, including two-game season series in 1985-86 and 1986-87. Nebraska owns a 28-11 lead in the all-time series. Since the series became continuous, Nebraska owns a 23-10 lead.

Nebraska will try to bounce back from its first loss of the season, a 53-51 setback to Alabama. Creighton heads into Thursday’s game with a 4-4 record after rallying from a 16-point halftime deficit to win 58-56 at Northern Iowa Monday. Nebraska will be the third top-15 foe on Creighton’s schedule so far this season, joining road losses at UConn and California.

Creighton enters the game averaging 66.5 points, despite shooting just 39 percent from the field. CU has had tremendous success from long range with 68 of its 189 field goals on the year coming from beyond the arc. Opponents are shooting 47.1 percent against the Jays, including 42.5 percent from three.

The Jays have held their own (-1.6 rpg) on the glass despite games against UConn, Cal, Utah, Wichita State, South Dakota State, Cincinnati and Seton Hall. CU outrebounded UNI, 42-36. Creighton has averaged just 12.4 turnovers per game.

Tear’a Laudermill led the Big Red with 25 points on a school-record-tying seven three-pointers in a losing effort against Alabama.

    Probable Starters:

    Nebraska Cornhuskers

    3 - Hailie Sample - 6-1 - Sr. - F - 6.9 ppg

    23 - Emily Cady - 6-2 - Sr. - F - 13.4

    1 - Tear’a Laudermill - 5-9 - Sr. - G

    13 - Brandi Jeffery - 5-7 - Sr. - G - 9.5

    33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - Jr. - G - 17.9

    Creighton Bluejays

    11 - Bailey Norby - 6-2 - Fr. - F - 2.4 ppg

    23 - Marissa Janning - 6-2 - Jr. - F - 16.4

    45 - Alexis Akin-Otiko - 6-0 - So. - F - 10.8

    3 - MC McGrory - 5-8 - So. - G - 8.3

    14 - Sydney Lamberty - 5-10 - Fr. - G - 7.1

Nebraska Coach Connie Yori has been a part of all but eight of the previous 39 meetings between Nebraska and Creighton.

Rachel Theriot has produced double figures in seven on NU’s first eight games this season.

Emily Cady owns 1,161 points, 855 rebounds, 242 assists and 118 steals. She is just the third player in Nebraska history with 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 career steals, joining Maurtice Ivy and Anna DeForge.

Nebraska remained No. 12 in The Associated Press Poll, while holding at No. 15 in the USA Today Coaches Top 25 after four weeks of regular-season play.

Brandi Jeffery had a nice game on the boards.  Some really silly turnovers trying to push the pace when maybe we should have taken the air out of the ball.  In the end, probably fortunate to win.  I need to keep in mind that these teams know each other well and it is a rivalry.  Need to get out of the Bakersfield game with a win and no injuries.

Havers really step it up tonight. Hailie won the game for us with her free throws. Emily had another double double. Brandi lead the team in rebounds. We are going to need more than eight players suited up if we are going to be successful in Big 10 play.

Havers was huge, thought maybe she should have stayed in at the of the game.

"The Bike Club" for the people with injuries.  I move that they call it the Noah Weiss Club, since I love riding a bike.  (It used to be called the Lance Armstrong Club back when I was at UNL, but obviously that has bad connotations nowadays :P)

Thought for sure there would have to be an official timeout for the EMT crew to lug out a few with heart problems towards the end of that one!

Major cudos to Tee Laudermill for the job she did on Janning tonight! Had she not locked her down the way she did we might have had an unhappy trip back down I-80. Brandi Jeffery just a monster on the boards! Thought Creighton's half time adjustments to keep the ball out of Rachel's hands the second half was key to their comeback, that and our inability to get out and pressure the three point shooter.  But when in trouble go inside to Emily!

Didn't help with Hailie Sample getting into foul trouble. Thought a couple of her fouls were really questionable.

Gotta get these girls out of their boots before we're resorted to running ads in the Daily Nebraskan looking for sorority girls that can dribble in more ways than one.

Major props to the NU students who made the trip to the Big O and made their presence known!! Good to see them out perform their counterparts in blue!!

Wow....CU goes 10-20....and probably had 7 of those 10 in the second half.  Something about those red jerseys get the jays outside shooting going....

Creighton is 8th in nation in 3 pt % at 40.5. So they were a little above their season avg. here is a link to the stats.

    http://espn.go.com/womens-college-basketball/statistics/team/_/year/2015/cat/7

And Nebraska's next opp. is coming in at 30th with a 38% make rate. And Michigan comes in 4 th at a 42.7 clip

We had trouble guarding the 3....and they shot 50%. ...30 points worth. That was pretty much all they had.

    Ugly game...but a win.

One foul on Hallie .....on the screen was bogus. Her 3 points under pressure was awsome. Creighton thought fouling her would win it for them.....not !

If we don't get  a lot more playing time for the rookies, next year is going to be tough.

I can see how the refs would have made that call on the screen foul. The player hit Hallie's knee as Hallie was leaving for the screen and roll had she stayed set a bit longer it might not have gotten called. Plus the ref's have been calling that screen a foul a lot this year.

please just tell fans that three steps is now okay if you are going to the hoop, because then they won't get yelled at so much. And I would not have such a bad headache after games.

At least you don't have A couple of people yelling get the ball after every damn shot. That gets very irritating game after game, I tried to change my seats this year but I didn't have any luck. So I will try next year.

allie havers had a pretty good game. the one thing i would have liked to have seen is trying to get her posted up closer to the basket. i thought she could have flourished under the basket against creighton. i really like her hustle, though. it does seem she has the habit of drifting away from the rim too often. i dvr'd the game, so, might have to check that "rim" play.

She was probably 10 or so feet from the basket on her jump shots that she made.

yes, hit a couple of crucial jumpers! but (and i could be wrong here) i believe she had anywhere from a 3 to 4-5" inch height advantage when she was in there. i don't believe creighton's tallest gal even saw playing time (freshman). just think that should have been taken advantage of a little more. i remember she had one nice cut to the basket for a layup and missed one shorty. she also had the one pass go right through her hands. not sure she was set for that pass coming.

i wish she would or could develop and baby hook. She has used it before, but it would be a good weapon almost unstoppable.

    # 50 is who you are talking about and she is 6 ft.. So Allie had a 5" height advantage on her.
