Huskers Head West to Clash with Cal Saturday

The Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to non-conference road action Saturday when the Huskers take on No. 22 California. Tip-off for the first-ever game between the Big Red and the Golden Bears is set for 7 p.m.

The Huskers head to California after completing a perfect 3-0 home stand with an 85-40 dismantling of Evansville. Freshman Jessica Shepard led four Huskers in double figures with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists. A three-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week, Shepard leads the Huskers with 19.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game through the first eight games of her career.

California enters the game with Nebraska ranked No. 22 nationally by the Associated Press and No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches Top 25. The Golden Bears carry a 6-2 record with their only setbacks coming to No. 10 Texas A&M and last Saturday at home to Saint Mary’s.

Saturday’s matchup will feature two of the nation’s top freshmen posts, as California’s 6-4 forward Kristine Anigwe is averaging 20.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Anigwe scored 70 points and grabbed 24 rebounds in 50 total minutes in two games last week, including 43 points and 12 boards in just 23 minutes in a 117-99 win over Sacramento State. Anigwe went 18-for-24 from the field.

As a team, Cal is scoring 75.4 points, but surrendering 69.2 points per game. The Bears are shooting 47.1 percent from the field, including 36.4 percent from three-point range. However, they have hit just 65.2 percent of their free throws. They carry a plus-6.7 team rebounding margin, but a minus-3.8 team turnover margin.

Saturday’s meeting will be the first-ever between Nebraska and California in women’s basketball.

    Probable Starters:

    Nebraska Cornhuskers

    43 - Rachel Blackburn - 6-3 - Fr. - F - 6.1 ppg
    32 - Jessica Shepard - 6-4 - Fr. - F - 19.3
    4 - Kyndal Clark - 5-7 - RSr. - G - 4.5
    5 - Natalie Romeo - 5-7 - So. - G - 14.8
    33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - Sr. - G - 10.5

    California Golden Bears

    3 - Mikayla Cowling - 6-2 - So. - F/G - 12.0 ppg
    24 - Courtney Range - 6-3 - Jr. - F - 13.3
    31 - Kristine Anigwe - 6-4 - Fr. - F/C - 20.0
    1 - Asha Thomas - 5-4 - Fr. - G - 12.4
    33 - Gabby Green - 6-2 - So. - G - 6.1

Nebraska is 20-0 against California teams in Coach Connie Yori’s 14 seasons in Lincoln.

Rachel Theriot needs just nine points to move into the top 20 in school history on the all-time scoring list. She enters Saturday’s game with 1,107 points.

Rachel Theriot needs five assists to become the fifth player in Nebraska history to reach 500 in her career.

Jessica Shepard has scored in double figures in eight straight games to open her career.

Jessica Shepard scored the 100th point of her career faster than any other Husker (Game 5).

Rachel Blackburn leads the Big Red with 8.1 rebounds through the first eight games.

Maddie Simon was growing her game quickly as a key contributor in the Husker lineup before suffering a broken arm in a fall outside of basketball activities. She is expected to miss several weeks.

some of you may have listened to 'sports nightly' wednesday night. if you didn't, matt coatney had an interview with natalie romeo. she was actually rather "chatty" compared to some of the comments made about her personality.  ;) matt asked her about the trip to california (going home---about 40 miles east) and asked her if she is familiar with the Bears. natalie laughed and stated she thought she knows all of them in one way or another (having played with or against them). matt also asked her about family being there, and, natalie bust out laughing and stated her dad had asked for about 25 tickets.  :D matt asked her what she enjoyed doing most on the court---believe he gave her three options: i remember dropping a 3 was one, running the floor may have been one along with being a leader? sorry, can't remember too well---natalie answered by stating she likes to "sprint"! that is what she enjoys doing the most. nat also stated she does feel more comfortable on the court. stated it does feel quite a bit different out there when comparing last year to this year. didn't really go into details---probably referring to majority of seniors. anyway, nice interview with nat. well done, i say.

btw, in case some might be wondering, coach yori (during her segment) stated nothing on maddie simon. no surprise there.

Our defense may be the key to the game?  Keep them from scoring at will...make it tough on them. Particularly in the paint. They  have height equalizers, inside, and at wings. We could have used Maddies size here for defense. Havers may be a factor again tonight.

Not so sure we want to get into a track meet with them either. Get back on defense.

Maybe we can get their big, Anigwe in foul trouble? Will Connie double team her in the paint? Do a Creighton style block her shot defense?

Offensively we'll need to share the ball, and score from inside as we can, plus get the perimeter game going, so we pull their rebounders away from the basket.

We're away, so get started quickly ladies !  Intensity and focus !

I'm guessing that future Husker Mi'cole Cayton and maybe a few other bay area recruiting targets the Huskers have shown interest in will be in attendance.

With all the success the California program has had the past few years they're struggling to get fans to go to games. Last weekend when they played St Mary's only 610 fans showed up. They're calling this game "Pack the Hass" running all sort of promotions in an effort to get fans to show up.  Could it be, just as many Husker fans in attendance as Cal fans?

Romeo & Washington are basically going "home" for this one  So there will be a bunch of Husker family there too.

well, i am gonna guess Cal will have a decent crowd---the men Bear's play St. Mary's(?) before the women's game and fans can get in to the women's game for $1 if the show a ticket from the men's game. really not sure if west coast fans have the attention span to get too excited to sit through back-to-back games. ;)

redsteve is spot on---husker defense will be key. don't get caught flat-footed on d. keep range and anigwe in check.

Checking Cal's website, ticket availability is low in all sections, and no availability court-side  (stub-hub shows some courtside seats for $500 or so).

Got mine from the Cal site, fairly good seats, Section 2(Center), but pretty far back,  Level C, Row M (about 8 rows from the back) for $12 ea. Can't go wrong with that, and may be able to move closer if the stadium is not full.

Could be a lot of Cal season ticket holders selling their tickets on Stub-Hub etc.

I see there are some general admission sections (not-reserved).

Good job going to the game, Red Don.   Hope you bring us a W.

Glad to see the picture on  the HHC home page of Darrien W. smiling and hanging with her teammates.  I hope that whatever has been the issue gets worked out.  It's a nice picture.
