No. 16 Huskers Open Season with Back-to-Back Home Games

The No. 16 Nebraska women’s basketball opens the 2014-15 regular season against Pepperdine Waves at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Tickets for the game can be purchased by visiting Huskers.com or by calling 1-800-8-BIG-RED. Tickets also will be available at the Pinnacle Bank Arena Box Office before the game. Reserved seats are just $10, while adult general admission tickets are just $5. Youth and seniors receive discounted rates, while UNL students with ID are admitted free.

A live premium video stream of Nebraska’s opener with Pepperdine will be available from BTN Plus.

The Huskers have opened with a pair of solid exhibition wins over NCAA Division II top-10 opponents Wayne State and Concordia-St. Paul.

Nebraska’s four-player senior class of Emily Cady, Hailie Sample, Tear’a Laudermill and Brandi Jeffery form the heart of the Husker lineup, after helping the Big Red to the most successful three-year stretch in school history. Nebraska notched the second-highest win total in school history for the third consecutive year, finishing at 26-7 (.788) to produce the second-best overall winning percentage in school history last year.

The Huskers have averaged 25 wins over the past three years, including 24 victories in 2012 and 25 wins in 2013.

Coach Ryan Weisenberg brings an experienced Pepperdine team to Lincoln for the opener. The Waves return five starters from Weisenberg’s first Pepperdine squad that struggled to a 6-25 overall record last season, including a 1-17 mark and a 10th-place finish in the West Coast Conference.

Although they struggled to find wins last season, Pepperdine’s starting five were balanced and productive. Last year, the Waves averaged just 64.4 points, while surrendering 75.6 points per game. Pepperdine hit just 38.3 percent of its shots from the floor, including 32.6 percent of its threes. The Waves were outrebounded by an average of six boards per contest and were a minus-0.8 in turnovers per game.

Nebraska owns a 2-1 lead in the against Pepperdine.

Nebraska’s total home attendance last year of 110,892 ranked No. 8 nationally, while NU’s average home attendance of 6,161 ranked 11th.

Emily Wood walked on to the Nebraska program after being recruited to play basketball by Harvard, Dartmouth, Washburn and Western Illinois.

From the Daily Nebraskan: NU women's basketball to begin season with weekend doubleheader

“One of my freshman the other day asked, ‘When is it going to get cold?’ and I said, ‘Hey, don’t wish that on us,’” Nebraska coach Connie Yori said at her press conference on Monday.

“I learned that we have a long ways to go. I do think that we made some progress in some areas,” Yori said. “We did a little bit better of a job of rebounding, a little bit better job in our transition game, which are two very important things for us. But there’s just so many little things in the game that we really got to get shored up and I think that will take time.”

Sounds like they haven't decided whether or not to red shirt her yet huskerchode. If they would have played her today that redshirt is gone.

Good start for the Huskers! What can you say about Brandi Jeffery?! She's played fantastically every game she's been in this season. Emily finishes with a double double and 2 assists away from a triple double. Rachel at one time hit 4 shots in a row. Hailie getting used to playing two different positions and coming up with some good drives and finishes to the bucket. In Tee's case today "that's what speed do!"!

Was really encouraged by the offensive showing today. These new players are getting better every game. Really like how Natalie gets in the lane and is able get that ball up. Once it starts to fall look out.

We got caught behind some screens the first half but made some crucial defensive adjustments at halftime and it completely shut down Pepperdine the second half which was really good to see. Alcorn St tomorrow, play the same way, maybe wind up scoring another triple digits.

Did I hear Connie say Washington may redshirt?

I didn't think Yori like to redshirt players, Whats up.

She doesn't, but that doesn't mean she never would.  Very rare, but possible.  My guess is Kalenta's development has put a redshirt of Washington on the table. If she isn't in line for many minutes, it might be a good decision.

I agree with you HB, I think they're looking at it as she will develop into a really nice player. And this year she might not get many minutes so  redshirt her and get her four solid years instead of losing one where she may not get on the court much at all.

Jeff Griesch explained what the thought process is concerning Washington, Saying that she has just been playing basketball in earnest since her sophomore year in high school. And had played club ball for one year with Romeo. I think it was only one year.

I've been part of the redshirt discussion before....it would seem that Connie has more options now, (7 good newbies this year and 4 more next) where redshirting may now be a more viable option. Washington has only played about 3 years of organized ball, so she needs to catch up skill wise, and game speed, and game IQ. I think I heard on radio....Washinton has even suggested redshirting.

I too see Kalenta helping to fill the void at low post help for the next couple of years. (got room to improve, and adjust to game speed, but she's showing the signs)  She's has enough experience before getting here to have a feel for the college game. Kalenta will also help "push" Havers to improve also.

Kalenta reminds me, a little, of Cady from a couple of years ago. They both play hard. Yori seems to be pleased with Kalenta's progress.

And she can shoot the 3 !

My wife and I were talking about the game on the drive home last night, and I made the comment that Anya my over take Allie as the first big to come off the bench. So far she seems to be the more consistent one and that should give her more time. I also like the different combo's Yori used yesterday.
