Huskers Open Season One at Pinnacle Bank Arena with Gorillas

The Nebraska women’s basketball team plays the first game in Pinnacle Bank Arena history when the Huskers face the Pittsburg State Gorillas in an exhibition game Sunday, Oct. 27.

Sunday’s tip with Pittsburg State will be the earliest start date in school history. Last season’s game with the Gorillas marked the previous earliest tip in history.

Pittsburg State returns to Lincoln following a 17-10 season in 2012-13. The Gorillas produced an 11-7 mark in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association last year. Seventh-year head coach Lane Lord owns a 104-68 career record at Pittsburg State. His Gorillas return three starters and eight letterwinners from last year’s squad, led by junior Lizzy Jeronimus. The 5-11 forward averaged 18.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and a team-best 2.7 assists as a sophomore. She also led the team with 26 steals a year ago.

The 2013-14 Huskers, who return four starters from last year’s squad that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 and finished with a 25-9 overall record.

    Probable Starters:

    Nebraska Cornhuskers

    3 - Hailie Sample - 6-1 - Jr. - F

    23 - Emily Cady - 6-2 - Jr. - F

    35 - Jordan Hooper - 6-2 - Sr. - F

    33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - So. - G

    13 - Brandi Jeffery - 5-7 - Jr. - G

    Pittsburg State Gorillas

    15 - Lizzy Jeronimus - 5-11 - Jr. - F

    23 - Kylie Gafford - 6-2 - So. - F

    22 - Alexa Bordewick - 5-7 - Sr. - G

    32 - Hailey Roderique - 5-9 - Jr. - G/F

    33 - Morgan Westhoff - 5-8 - Jr. - G

Nebraska will celebrate its first season in Pinnacle Bank Arena in 2013-14. The arena, located in the historic Haymarket in downtown Lincoln just steps away from the Nebraska campus, will serve as the new home for Husker women’s basketball team.

    ------------

Connie Yori begins her 12th season at NU (215-135) and her 24th season overall (410-275)

    ------------

Local radio personality James Kyhn earned the spot as the new voice of Husker women's basketball over the public address system in the new arena through an audition in mid-October. He replaces John Bishop, who served as the PA voice of the Husker women for the past several years at the Devaney Center. Bishop stepped aside from his PA duties over the summer because of additional commitments at his radio job in Omaha.

Connie said on sports nightly there's a good chance that Brandy and Rachel would sit the exhibition out.  Sprained ankles nothing major, which makes it more interesting to me cause we will see more of the other guards Sadie, Esther and Hannah.  I will be unfortunately missing this one for 4 year olds birthday party followed by preschool trick-or-treat, so any recap would certainly be appreciated.

    Nebraska 8 Pitt 2 @ 16:45

Havers in off the bench in last two trips down the court. On D, nice deny down low for the steal. Hustles down the court to get offensive rebound, put back. Next trip down the floor offensive board off miss.

She's long and puts herself in good position.

Tvrdy really looked strong today. Matt and Jeff were talking about how hard she hit the weights over the summer. She looked calm and under control. And like Bugeaters said, great control going to the hoop.

    Simon looked improved.

I think Sample worked on her shot.

    Hoop was Hoop.

    Cady was great.

Brandi Jeffery was outstanding. She might just be my player of the game.

Huskers need some work on D but really nice debut here by the newbs.

Havers is going to be special folks.

I wonder why people were saying that Trvdy didn't merit a scholly. To my uneducated eye it looked like she is more than capable of playing DI ball. I know today was against a DII school but still she looked like she wasn't in over her head at anytime.

98-47 the final. Huskers looked good once they got into the flow of the game! Granted the level of competition wasn’t B1G caliber, never the less Big Red looked really good. Emily Cady steady as always with the double/double 11 boards and 11 points. JHoop with limited minutes finishes with 19 points and 9 boards. And true freshman Allie Havers throws in 14 points and grabs 6 boards. Brandi Jeffery a force on the boards grabs 9 rebounds dishes out 7 assists and scores 4. Rachel Theriot not playing in this one as she sat out with a sore ankle.

Allie Havers didn’t look like a freshman that’s for sure. For a big girl she can run the floor, handle the rock, rebound, score and most importantly can CATCH THE BALL in traffic under the bucket! The upside on #22 is off the charts and it’s going to be a lot of fun watching her progress.

EC and JHoop look to have picked up right where they left off from last March. One can tell Hallie Sample worked on her shot this past summer! Hallie had 15 points on 5-6 shooting. Good first start for H Tvrdy but she needs to pick up her pace.

Both Tee and Brandi looked the part for trying to replace Zeroes. I thought Brandi was the better this afternoon but Tee was good too. I really liked how Brandi came up with the loose ball rebound time after time. And how she drove the lane and dished off especially with the shot clock running down.

    Pinnacle Bank Arena woes:

The new arena is nice but one thing it totally lacks is a scoreboard the gives the information on individual player stats. I don’t know how many times I looked up at the score board to see how many rebounds and assists Brandi had only to find that she had 4 points and 1 foul. The ribbon board gave out the team stats which was nice but I would like to see an individual stat score board.

Parking was a problem getting in. I guess it wasn't as much of a problem getting in as it was too time consuming. They need to tell the ticket takers to speed it up. It’s going be total caos for men’s game if they don’t address the problem now. In the open lots north of the arena where people had bought parking passes, they came in thinking they had a place to park and found out they still had to pay to park.

Some arena personnel could definitely use an attitude check saw a few of them being rude to several fans both before and after the game.

I came away with two things I was hoping for. First off, Havers is going to be good.  At 6'5" she moves well and she definitely knows how to play around the basket. I know the competition wasn't great but she has some moves. And it will be a bonus if she can hit the 3's. I think she was 1 for 2 today.  She's going to get a lot of rebounds and defend other teams talls.

Secondly, I came away impressed with Tvrdy.  She seemed to handle the ball well and drove to the basket and finished. She also hit a 3.  I don't know how fast she is but she looks strong.

I liked seeing Laudermille hitting a couple of 3's.  Hopefully her shooting (and Jeffery's) improves over last year.

Sample even hit an outside shot.  Her free throw shooting is so much better now.  She used to have almost no arch but today her shot looked good, only missing 1.  If she can give us around 10 points a night and hit a few outside shots, people will have to guard her and open up the middle.

    Overall I was impressed.

No. I thought maybe a 1000.  PBA is deceiving lol.

Deceiving is right, I hope that was the right number and they don't start padding the actual attendance like Iowa St. does.

I estimated 5,000 while at the game.  the lower bowl holds a lot of people on the sides, and the sides were pretty full.  Great crowd for an exhibition game.  I think they got it right on announced actual attendance.
