Huskers Tip Final Season at Devaney Against Gorillas

The Nebraska women's basketball team opens its final season at the Bob Devaney Sports Center by tipping off exhibition play for the 2012-13 season against the Pittsburg State Gorillas on Monday, Oct. 29.

Nebraska's battle with the Gorillas is set for a 7:05 p.m. tip, with live radio coverage provided by the Husker Sports Network, including Omaha flagship 93.3 FM The Wolf. Nebraska's exhibition games will not be carried over the air on Lincoln flagship B107.3 FM. The game is also available for free on Huskers.com.

Nebraska enters 2012-13 after a young Husker team ran to a 24-9 overall record, including a 10-6 Big Ten mark in 2011-12. The Huskers advanced to their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in the past six years and battled their way to the Big Ten Tournament championship game in their first season in the conference. The 2012-13 Huskers return four starters and 10 letterwinners from last season's squad.

Coach Connie Yori's Huskers will be led by Wade Trophy Watch List members Lindsey Moore and Jordan Hooper. Moore, a senior from Covington, Wash., was one of eight finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award presented to the nation's top point guard in 2011-12. Hooper, a junior forward from Alliance, Neb., earned honorable-mention All-America accolades from the Associated Press, while claiming first-team All-Big Ten honors. They are joined by returning starting forwards Emily Cady and Hailie Sample.

While Nebraska's 24 wins a year ago marked the second-most victories in school history, Pittsburg State is coming off the best season in school history. The Gorillas rampaged through the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association with a 17-1 conference record on their way to a 27-6 overall mark. Coach Lane Lord and the Gorillas earned their first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.

Not sure how good Pitt St is but they made the elite 8 last year in division II. Hooper led the Huskers with 17 points and 9 boards. Tee Laudermill had 12 pts. Jeffery and Woodberry both chipped in 11. Sadie Murren the true freshman from Wahoo scored 7 points. This little blonde has a little giddy up in her shot and she seems to be fairly accurate. The other freshman Courtney Aitken also play quite a bit but didn't put a shot up. Both played some pretty good D. Rachel Theriot sat on the bench with her foot in a boot. Hopefully she be ready to go pretty soon. Lindsey looks as if she's on a mission.

"I was really pleased and surprised by our defense," Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. "That's the best defense we've played at any point in our practice setting so that's really positive."

Really liked the tempo for this early in the year.

If you come to Nebraska to play, you most likely will get your chance.

Connie really loves to run them in and out.'

Also is Theriot out with a foot or ankle, hadn't read what it was.

    Did Maurer and Sample play?

Sample started and played 16 minutes and Maurer came off the bench and played 24 minutes. Most of Maurer's minutes came in the second half. You could tell Sample needs a little more time to get back into the flow of things. She needs to get more consistent shooting the ball. But for missing so much practice time she did some good things out there. Maurer needs more time to develop looks as if she's thinking to much. She seems to play at times like she's unsure of herself. Her footwork needs a lot of work especially on the defensive side. It's going to take some time though, hopefully her back holds up.

I also thought Emily struggled a few times trying to create on offense come to think of it Jordan did too, JHoop got stuffed by their 6'6 center two or three times trying to force up shots. For the most part though both played great as did Lindsey and Brandi J. Our defense (granted it was Division II Pitt St) looked pretty good. I thought both freshmen played really well for this being their first game. We were deadly from behind the arc. It'd be really fun if we could hit that well every game. And I really liked the intensity Lindsey brought.

Row 6: Glad to hear Sample could at least play 16 minutes, after her physical struggles. She plays hard and helped us in a lot of ways last year as a true freshmen. But if her shooting could get to "inconsistent", it would be a vast improvement. It was actually quite consistent last year, and not in a good way. Hopefully she has made some strides in the offseason with her shooting form.

It appeared that Laudermille worked hard in the offseason on improving her shot. It looked like it had much more arc to it and not just a straight shot to the rim. She could help us out a lot this year if doesn't revert back to the old form.
