Heard one of the NIT announcers opine that Chris Mack would not be a big enough "name" to satisfy the Cardinal fan base.

Most anyone would not be.

Louisville has had quite the run of basketball coaching continuity. Since 1945 it's basically been Bernard Hickman, Denny Crum, and Rick Pitino.

I also wasn't aware they dabbled as a Missouri Valley team for a while back in the 60s-70s.

Goodness, if this had been true, I would have been shocked...but:

GoLocalProv claimed that AD Thorr Bjorn had come to an agreement with former Louisville head coach Rick Pitino to become URI’s next basketball coach. The report said that the deal, which would have paid Pitino $2 million per season, was eventually nixed by President David Dooley.

URI came out and denied the story and apparently is close to a deal with Joe Dooley from Florida Gulf Coast.

Ahhh, but the story gets even better.  Apparently Coach Dooley is indeed leaving Florida Gulf Coast...but:

Florida Gulf Coast head coach Joe Dooley is returning to East Carolina according to a report by 94.3 The Game.  Dooley was the head coach at East Carolina from 1995-1999 where he went 57-52. He then served as an assistant at Kansas, New Mexico, and Wyoming before becoming the head coach at FGCU in 2013. This past season Dooley led the Eagles to a 23-12 (12-2) record and will leave the school with a 114-58 mark in his five seasons.

The East Carolina Board of Trustees is meeting this afternoon to approve the contract with an official announcement expected after that.

Dooley was also reportedly in the final group at URI. An announcement there is expected shortly as well.
