uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: Vol 8, Issue 11 - Rhode Island

I was going to post before the game today about Michael Jacobson and my belief that he could become a special player for us.

I was actually going to start the thread with something like "If he works hard ..."

I think his shooting ability could be a huge weapon.  I've said this before, but he has a good looking shot.  If he really works at it, there's no reason he couldn't be a solid weapon from deep, and I'm thinking high 30s at least.

He needs to add some post moves to his arsenal.  Also hit the weights and gain some added strength, quickness and explosiveness.  We might not try as a matter of course to enter the ball to him in the low post, but when opportunities are there, he needs to be able to convert.

And then his FT shooting is exceptional.

I think he could be a future star.  Especially if he grew another inch or two.

How about a comparison to the OU center, Ryan Spangler.  Also 6'8", he's listed at 234 but he does look bigger, also a top high school football player except he was a QB. With the caveat that Spangler appears to be at a higher level athletically than Jacobson, but that's a fifth year senior compared to a true freshman.

Hopefully he's not a 5 full time his whole career, but with Morrow and Horne also at the 4 the next three years there is hopefully some decent depth at that spot.

The reason Parker turns the ball over is that in traffic he has two choices:

1. look at the ball as he dribbles it while missing passing opportunities or not being able to see traps coming his way or

2. Not looking at the ball and mishandling it because is a poor ball handler.

I root for him and he hit a clutch shot but he absolutely kills us on offense!

After reading your post, I all can say is I hope you never root for me.

When Benny penetrates and kicks the ball out, it generally does not lead to an open shot because 90% of Benny's drives initiate on the wing, not at the top of the key. 80% of the time he does not drive to the basket, but rather dribbles to the middle of the free throw lane about 10 feet from the rim. The weak side defender does not sag off his man with the drive starting on the other side of the court, and since he doesn't go to the rim he doesn't draw any help off any post defenders.

The weak side defender should already be sagged off if the ball is on the other side of the court?

I am a huge Edward Morrow fan.  That said, his limited time on the floor today was not good.  He mostly looked lost both offensively and defensively.  I am not sure if he has simply lost his mojo, or the offensive and defensive installations are confusing to him?  We need Ed, and his talent is obvious, but today was not a good day for him.

Ubel-ish?
Ubel had good touch and shot well from deep as a freshman, but his mechanics were poor and he couldn't find the range as a sophomore and junior and quit trying as a senior. Jacobson has good mechanics and just needs to shoot as many as he can before and after practice until he has it dialed in. I like the Ubel comparison, actually.

Agree. Is there an NBA player he reminds you of?

He was giving Four the business out there.  Loved it!

yes, anyone named Four is deserving of some business.

His parents must of watched the Seinfeld episode about naming a baby "Seven" in honor of Mickey.  Either that or he has brothers and/or sisters named One, Two and Three?

"Four" is basically a nickname. His given name is Patrick McGlynn IV

Would like to see us eventually put Ed at the 4, Jacobsen 5, shavon 3 and white the 2, with Watson at PG. I think this would be an interesting line up.

I'm a huge Morrow fan but he doesn't look ready yet and seems lost at times.  Jacobsen isn't really a true center either but he held his own on Sunday.  An even more interesting lineup would be (if we wanted a bigger lineup):

1) Watson

2) Shields

3)  White

4)  Jacobson

5)  Hammond

I like the idea of going a bit bigger too, let a guy like Morrow be more at his natural position.

However with Shields or White at the 2, would we need to play more zone? Can either of those guys handle a B1G level shooting guard in man?

If we go bigger, I wouldn't mind seeing some 1-3-1 as a change up, do some trapping. Coach Miles & staff don't seem to like zone much, so it probably doesn't happen. And with the added difficulty of defensive rebounding out of a zone, it might not work well for us.

But if you go really big and put Webster at the top of the 1-3-1 instead of Parker or Watson, you could create some problems with all that length I'd think.

Couldn't play it as a base defense, but I think it'd work well as a change up for a few minutes a half. Of course then you run into the problem of how much time in practice do you devote to zone defensive work if you're going to only use it a little bit. There's a lot of moving parts in there that all have to be in sync or it doesn't work.
