I'm sure there were reasons we didn't offer, but I'm going to disagree on these. He's an inside player, we need guys to bang. You want to tell him he's soft?

Having watched him play for the last three years at Central yes. Compared to guys like Morrow and even to MJ, yeah he's soft. Not even close to being able to "bang". And even if he is, he'd get "banged" by Big Ten big men much more than he would reciprocate the "bang"

Had a slew of mid-major offers. New Mexico was far and away his bet offer. I've never seen him play. No idea if he'd be worth the offer, seems like he'd be a redshirt candidate. Maybe if you can get Ernst, you take him. The goodwill alone might make it worth it.

If we got Ernst and Allen, I would especially be all in for this plan.

Does Anyone Know If We Even Have our eyes on Ernst? Or is he just someone who's available that this site would love to have?

I watched him play three times in '17. I would say that he has dramatically improved from the player he was as a sophomore (when I first started watching him) into his junior year, and now into his senior year. The player I saw this year was starting to open the book on how to bang and be physical. He's also sneaky athletic. Similar, doughy-body to a guy like Kennedy Meeks of UNC (not the same caliber of player fwiw), but with more bounce. He also seemed to understand the value of running the floor offensively this year and had great hands/footwork/seal ability in offensive transition. Has nice shooting stroke/touch also.

Is he a B1G player? Probably (definitely) not right out of the gate. But, my god, if we could just keep one dude around long enough and develop them - I see no reason he couldn't be very serviceable as a junior and senior. And that's the thing that gets so frustrating to me. We're so hit and miss here. Rarely do we ever just keep guys around who are incredibly serviceable and reliable. If a dude can be brought in under that premise, I'm all for it.

If the conversation goes like this with some in-state guys, "Hey ______ (instate player), we really want you a part of this program. But you have to come in with the mindset that we have no real plan to get you immediate, major, consistent minutes in your freshman and probably sophomore year. If you are cool with that, and are going to come to work and develop every day - we would love to offer you a scholarship." Then heck, I'm all for it. It would be great to have some in-state guys who are grinders that stay into their junior/senior years.
