The snub was news Thursday to the 6-foot-7 senior, who was ninth in the conference in scoring last season (15.4), 14th in rebounding (6.0) and fifth in free-throw shooting (82.7 percent).

“Hmm ... that’s kind of disappointing,” Shields said in an interview at Big Ten media day. “Actually, that’s really disappointing.”

Motivating, too?

“Yeah,” he said after a pause. “You could call it that.”

Nebraska coach Tim Miles was equally disappointed, saying: “Shavon deserves that type of talk.” Then Miles added something he hadn’t said before.

“I think Shavon’s got a chance to be an NBA player,” the fourth-year coach said. “He has improved his game. He has improved his body. He’s gotten better every year.

“Last year, he suffered from the 3-point line (19.5 percent), but who on our team didn’t? He’s a guy who needs to make more than one a game at a good rate to get into the NBA conversation. But I think he can do that.”

Methinks postseason honors are more important than preseason honors.

The post-season honors might count for more.

But Shavon isn't saying he's motivated by the possibility of post-season honors.  He says he's motivated by the snub of not getting the pre-season honors.

So, in that sense, for us and for our outlook on this season, the pre-season honor that he didn't get might end up having more impact than the post-season honor that he will get.

Miles expecting big year from Shavon.  Thinks he's going to score a whole lot of points for us.  "The fact he’s not considered one of the ten best players in our league is a surprise to me, but at the same time, he’s fine with that. He’s just going to go out and do this job, and you’re going to be surprised at how good he’s going to be.”

I don't have higher expectations now than I had a year ago at this time.  But I do expect this team will end up with a better record and be a better team than how last year's team wound up.

(Last year at this time, visions of Sweet 16s danced in my head.  Six months later, the visions dancing in my head looked more like the Shim-Shams than Sweet 16s.)

Reminds me of last season's preseason rankings being lauded, I'd much rather have the team being lauded AFTER the year has been completed with success in the NCAA's.

Being 'underrated' has been a specialty of the Shields family. Dad's now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Son could be following a path to greatness, too; can't wait to find out how high of a level Shavon leads Nebrasketball.

Was Will Shields ever truly underrated?  He was an all america and several time Pro-bowler (where a large percentage of the votes were from peer players and opposing coaches).  I don't think Will was really underrated at all, especially not in his pro career where he was considered one of the best players at his position throughout his entire career.

Yes, Will was fairly unknown and, thus, underrated out of H.S. from tiny Lawton, OK. He worked his way up through the ranks to finally gain notoriety at NU & was only a third round pick in the NFL. In K.C. Will came in as an injury replacement in the Chiefs lineup in their 1st game of the season. Definitely underrated at points along the path of each step of his career, but Will clearly worked his tail off to get better & better. That seems fairly familiar with some of the things that Shavon has done (albeit not to the same level of success, to this point). Being "underrated" does not equate to being untalented.

I read on my online news source (MSN) this morning that scientists have found a hole in the sun. Therefore I must assume that sunshine pumping will be much more difficult this year. Perhaps the thread should now be changed to the biggest reason for pessimism this year. I will vote for our inability to hit three point shots under game conditions until I see evidence to the contrary.

Either that, or the sunshine had to go somewhere Jimmy, meaning there should be a lot more of it to pump around.

It's a little like the alternative view of light-bulbs.  Light-bulbs don't emit light; Rather they are Dark-suckers. :o  When they are full of darkness, they cannot suck any more dark and need replacing.

Whether they be light-emitters, or dark-suckers, may the Light Shine on Husker BB this season.

Now, about those 3-pointers!   ;)

High expectations? Hell, I thought we'd win the B1G last year. This year if we can shoot it like I THINK we can, the Big Dance and a top six finish in league isn't out of the question & I'd bet you a lap dance from a Shim Sham on that!

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit there with the Shim Sham picture in my mind.
