Does Jake Hammond start?

  1. 1. Well, does he?

    • Whatever his liabilities might be, they're offset with his length that we need. And he seems a tough kid. Yes, he starts.

    • Hammond's a nice kid. Had some good moments in Espana and I certainly think he gets minutes. But he's not our best option at this point. No, he doesn't start.

We need someone impressive to stand in the circle for the opening tip off. I'll predict now that he will be better than Jorge-Brian.

True. We would have been just as effective if we had Kevin Hart take the opening tip-offs.

Interestingly enough, that'll be the height of our shortest starter too.

3 Andrew White G ----- 6-7 -- 220 JR Richmond, VA

10 Jack McVeigh F ---- 6-7 -- 210 FR Gold Coast, QLD

23 Nick Fuller F -------- 6-7 -- 207 SO Sun Prairie, WI

30 Edward Morrow F -- 6-7 -- 215 FR Chicago, IL

31 Shavon Shields F -- 6-7 -- 221 SR Olathe, KS

I'm sorry, but we have to have another 6'7" kid besides Fuller to say that Jake Hammond won't start.  Maybe Michael Jacobson could wear thin socks or something.

By the way, I could see some very realistic rotations in which we have 4 guys 6'7" on the floor at once.

I would think that the top seven, as far as minutes played, will be Shields, White, Watson, Morrow, McVeigh, Webster, and Parker.  That leaves Jake fighting with Jacobson and Fuller for the remaining minutes up front with Evelyn in the backcourt.

So, between Hammond and Jacobson at getting minutes at the five, what does Hammond provide that Jacobson doesn't?  He'll challenge a few more shots at the rim and maybe get a few more second shots off of offensive rebounds. As far as overall rebounding/post defense/post offense, I can't see one having an advantage over the other right now. But Jacobson could provide more of a mismatch on offense, he should be able to shoot from outside well enough to draw the opponent's five away from the basket, and Jacobson is probably better at passing and handling the ball.

I don't think the Spain trip is any indicator of Hammond's minutes.

Those were exhibition games and they had nothing to lose with playing guys more or tinkering with lineups.

Maybe 5-7 minutes is low but I really don't think he is more than a spot duty player. Probably will still see quite a few DNP or 1-2 minute end of game appearances.

In this thread he was compared to Jorge Diaz. I think that is a disservice to Diaz.

I hope all the best for Hammond but I would be surprised when he is a senior, if he is playing as many minutes or giving us the production that Jorge gave us as a *freshman*.

I think the Jorge comparison pertained only to the opening tip off, which was not Jorge's strong suit.

I found it odd when Miles said "Jake's still a freshman to me," in the presser from 10-5.  It's hard to know what to make of it, especially since he seemed to be joking about it anyway.
