Well, this kid went ahead and committed to Creighton this weekend.  Which is too bad. I think he could probably have held on for some better offers.  I think the kid is pretty good.

Maybe it's a good fit, personally or scheme-wise. Wonder what the Craytonians think of their new guy....

I'm sure he is the most underrated of all underrated prospects of all time.  Next Husker recruit that is not in the top 150 with a lackluster offer list I'm sure they will conveniently forget that McDermott has not exactly tore it up on the recruiting trail.

Of course, I don't care what they say. And I don't necessarily go by Rivals, either. I said I didn't like Leon Gilmore and he was in Rivals 150. But I also said I liked both Roby and Horne before they were ranked. Whatever Rivals says about this kid aside, I think he looks pretty good. He was starting to get some decent offers, too.

BTW, I didn't say you'd care, Normy. I simply asked a question & 13 obliged & answered. Nothing more to it.

I know. And I was just responding to what huskerbaseball13 said. I am sure Creighton fans think they got a good one here and I think they are probably right. I saw this kid's film and was impressed. I think he has explosive leaping ability and he's a good shooter. He seems to have good court awareness, timing, and passing skills. I suspect he was just beginning to heat up and more offers probably would have come in. Sometimes that happens at this point in the recruiting season as schools try to finish up their rosters.

But, like I said, I don't think his presence or absence in the rivals 150 means very much. Huskerbaseball13 is probably right about what they would say if we signed a player with similar offers. And, actually, offers from Kansas State, Tulsa, and Wichita State would be a better set of offers then the majority of kids we signed under the prior two coaching regimes.

According to a Rivals report on this guy's commitment, "a lot of college coaches and schools like Miami, Georgia Tech and Nebraska also started making a push to land Mintz."

Unless this guy can play center, the Nebraska reference seems odd.

well, that is true if you assume that we only have one scholarship left and only one area of need. I am not sure those are safe assumptions, however. And the other problem is that there are not a lot of quality bigs left on the board. In my opinion, it would be nice to have another young guard who would have some experience after Webster and white have left. We lose three guards in the next two recruiting cycles and we don't have any guards on board for the 16 class.

Miles is adamant and clear that he wants a center. The staff is all over 2017 and younger guys--and already has a 2017 commit.

Another scholarship availability won't be known for many months.

So . . . its not much of an out-on-a-limb to say the Nebraska reference is odd.

Frankly, it looks like the interest from Kansas St. on this player was something of a plan b or c.

True.

But, if we don't nab a guard this year, when the Class of '16 are sophomores, our roster will look like ...

Srs:

G Anton Gill

C Jake Hammond

F Nick Fuller

Jrs:

G Bakari Evelyn

G Glynn Watson

F Ed Morrow

F Jack McVeigh

F Michael Jacobson

Sophs:

F Isaiah Roby

F Jeriah Horne

C Sumbig Dude

Frosh:

G Aguek Arop

(13th spot held in reserve for possible Wisconsin non-qualifier :P;) )

Is that enough guards in the upper classes? Would you feel comfortable with only 3 non-freshmen guards on your team?

I can understand why Miles would consider bringing in another guard. Yeah, we need a center worse, but not if the only options left on the board are stiffs.

I have really high hopes for Sumbig Dude. Really, really high.

I think Miles likes guys who are transitional players, meaning they could play multiple positions. Guys like Isaiah Roby and Jack McVeigh might be at 2 or 3 (or possibly even the 4 depending on the situation). So, really, many guards or forwards NU has recruited might be best served as "wings" in the system that Miles employs. That would make it PG, Wings & Bigs; of which, a 'big' could be a Jeriah Horne and an Ed Morrow Jr.

Papio LaVista's Ed Chang would look really good in Red, he's in the class of '18. Hey, if the Husker football team can already have an '18 commit, why not Nebrasketball?

BTW, it's Michael (not Andrew) Jacobson. He's an arm-chair PF at the moment. ;)

Making a push to land him? We didn't offer the guy a scholarship so I don't see where the push is.

Since Horne just verballed 4 days ago. If we were actually looking at this kid it's fairly probable it was in the capacity of "who do we sign if we don't sign Horne?" That very well might have been what K-State did offering him after losing out on Horne.

As much as we hate it, you also have to add in transfers. I think that we will get another and lose at least 2 from the people you've listed.

Yep, this guy was "blowing up" as teams like GT, NU, Miami were starting to look at him.  What this simply means is that maybe a coach was at a game/practice of his to watch.  Nothing more, nothing less.

His write up said he could be a "high mid-major prospect"

Look, this guy could end up good.  But unless Mac starts to recruit better (on paper at least), his classes are starting to look like Doc Sadler type guys when you are beating out the Tulsa's and Columbia's of the world.

And the Big East has recruited very, very well.  CU has struck out on almost every "bigger" name recruit they have gone after.  It will be very interesting to see how they do these next few years.  The more and more you see who they are getting, the more and more they look like a Doc Sadler type team on paper.  Decent players, not great players.  And when you start to play "Big Boy" basketball, you need to sprinkle in some "great" players.  Mac hasn't shown the ability to get very many good HS players the past few years.  He got some guys that fit very well in the Valley, but he's not in the Valley anymore.

Creighton fans will never admit this, but if they aren't careful, they could become the Depaul of that league.  They already finished last, last year, and this year I just don't see them competing all that well (I could be wrong).  And if you continue to downslide, its much, much harder to recruit top tier players.  Who should know this more than us NU fans?

So, who's the OWH subscriber?  Swan?  B/c it isn't me.

I saw video of this kid, saw that he was being offered by some schools in this area and posted the film. I thought his film looked pretty decent and I said so.  But I couldn't find a Rivals page for him to see what schools were listed as having interest.  Considering his film, I found that surprising and I figured if I posted it here, someone might find a Rivals profile that I had missed.

Then Swan brought up an article on Rivals (not OWH) that said Nebraska, among others, had shown interest.  And Swan made the point that it doesn't make sense for us to be going after guards considering we're in need of a center.

Then I agreed that we need a center but suggested we might also be on the lookout for guards if it appears that there aren't any more bigs out there that we would want to sign.  (So, for instance, if it's Sergej Vucetic version 2.0, I think we'd pass.)  We need a center, yes, but we also need another guard and it wouldn't be a horrible idea to have one in this class as I have laid out above.

I never said we were making a push to land this kid.  I only suggested it wouldn't be out-of-line for us to be looking for quality guards right now.  The information about "making a push" for Mintz came from Rivals as reported above by Swan.

So, are you suggesting it's Rivals who subscribes to the OWH?  I'm confused.

Creighton has been in on Sombig Dude for months now.  We would definitely be coming late to the party on that one.  Besides, he's a perfect fit for the system they run.

Sure, they say that now.  But if we were to land him, they'd be all like "we didn't really want him anyway."

He's definitely a diamond in the rough though...their ability to develop talent is legendary so he'd be stupid not to choose them.
