Anyone who thinks signing the deal with ESPN was a gaffe is missing the point of building a brand and building a program. No other way to look at it. If you are anybody you play in one of these every year.

Especially when you consider that Miles & Co. are up for the challenge of expanding the Husker brand & playing tough, neutral court ballgames fairly early in the season.

The better question: Why wouldn't NU play in an ESPN-sponsored holiday classic for three straight years?  I don't recall ESPN knocking down the Huskers' doors in quite a long time, and Miles signed up for the challenge within a year of being at NU. Dude isn't afraid of failure, he's building for long-term SUCCESS!

I really, really, really, want them to get into Maui. A big year next year could get them in that conversation, maybe even a big finish to this year. We haven't been there since 87. Can't imagine there are many high-major teams that have have gone that long without making an appearance there. They've got the 2014 and 2015 fields set. Would love to get in the 2016 field, which would be Tai's senior year. That'd be sweet.

I mentioned it 2 times, that is all.

You have 60+ posts on the board.

Over half of them have been in regards to you thinking that the Charleston Classic was some sort of scheduling error.

Everyone on the board knows that you think it was a mistake.  You have an entire topic dedicated to the topic.

If you think that we should schedule only winnable games you will hate the Tim Miles era because that is NOT what he does.

I think all losses hurt us, but their are some that hurt worse then others, because they snowball. I think our SCC losses against UMASS & UAB hurt really bad, and our loss to Creighton was not necessary. All 3 are with in our control and completely unnecessary to play. Like i said earlier, the SCC was too much to early, the team was inexperienced. If we go back to the sunbowl classic, we win that tournament. We bring in UAB and Georgia at PBA. Take Creighton off and bring in Drake. 3 good games 3 win we are 17- 7, i think the confidence we would have would have be good for +1 more win, the PSU game so I think we would be 18-6,7-5 in big 10 play with 6 to play, we go 5-1 the rest of the way and 2 win in the big 10 toruney. that is 23 -7 in Big10 play and 25 win total, that is a Dance resume.

First of all, it's the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational. Secondly, going back down there to play a low mid-major and then UTEP on their home court DOES. NOT. HELP.

Georgia doesn't come to play us in Lincoln...it does nothing for them. Plus we wouldn't want to do the home and home with also having to go on the road for the ACC challenge next year. UAB doesn't come to Lincoln because it does nothing for them. There aren't a whole lot of D-1 recruits in this state which also makes it tough to schedule an attractive home non-con.

Your scheduling arguments hold no water.

Time to drop that argument, icedragon.  You have mentioned several times in the past that you think it was a mistake to schedule tough the way Miles scheduled.  I think you're totally wrong, but, fair enough, we can agree to disagree.

What we cannot agree on is your need to bring this up again and again.  The loss to Creighton was not "avoidable" since our commitment to playing that game took place long before Miles was hired.  We've been playing that series for ... a long time.  While there have been times I would have favored dropping it, we haven't.  And there's certainly no shame losing to them this year.  It puts us in pretty good company.

As far as the tournament in Charleston, I cannot believe you continue to beat that drum.  I'm not going to even comment.  It's time to let it go.  As in don't bring it up again.

I mentioned it 2 times, that is all.  I am sorry you take to so personally, but someone else brought the subject up.  They asked about bad losses, I simply responded with my opinion.  That is what we do here is give opinions.  That is my opinion and I am sticking to it.  Sorry you don't like it, but I don't believe the forum is called "tell Norm what he wants to hears forum".  Here is a suggestion,  why don't just try responding to the post.  What bad losses do you see. I've to you mine you tell me yours

Icy when does just getting to the tournament good enough? A tough schedule will make a hardened team. There are no guarantees that they would have won any of those games you mentioned. tux

I think you don't get where I am coming from.  The expectation have changed the minimum standard is tournament play.  MINIMUM.  We do want more, but I am coming from the minimum standard  that we will except from now on. BTW we have never had a time where we went to tournament play consistently. Show me where we have had 15 to 20 years of tournament  play.  NIT or NCAA does not matter.  I respect the battle harden approach, but it also gives us losses we don't need.   I am coming from a different angle on this.  I think the NCAA selection committee looks at the "whole" body of work not just the non-con.  They have a minimum standard of of 3-5 win against the top 25 as a minimum standard. I think the magic number is 4.  If you go to CBSsports.com and look at the teams that made the NCAA tournament as non-AQ's the last 3 or 4 years, you will see most don't play the number of top 25 team we play.  Even Duke does not play as many as we play. So I ask the question, Why are we playing more top 25 teams then necessary?  If we can get to the tournament by playing 6 top 25 teams rather then 9 or 10, why not give our self a chance to have 4 more wins?  I don't see the problem.   We are banishing ourselves to the NIT.   It's not like we are playing nobody, all the teams I have proposed are respectable teams and we will have to play the whole game. UTEP, Wyoming, Drake, Georgia, UAB  all worthy opponents, playing those guy on the road is better then playing Cincinnati, Creighton and UMass,  we get the hostel environment and a team we stand a chance against.  Just saying, a few changes and we might be Dancing sooner then you think.  The question is how bad do you want?  are you willing to put your ego aside and do what it takes?  that is what i think it is going to take.

is this suppose to be something?

That is where you and I disagree very much, It gives us CONTROL of our Schedule. We gave up to much CONTROL by playing a tourney like the SCC.  It was to much to early.  We Played Western ILL who went to the SBI, so your point is moot.  We play them there and we still have CONTROL of our schedule.  Lets make a mock bracket,   We won against Western ILL.  UTEP played Denver in the championship and won.     Ok  we play UTEP in the Championship. I think we win that.  We are the Champions of the SBI. A title and something to build on.   I think the DHC is the right tournament for this team next year.  Control of our non-con is the KEY to the BIG dance

If recruiting were the only incentive then you have a point, but I think we have more to offer, Winnable match ups againt a team with a tough conference schedule on TV? that is what we offer. Come on we do this when we look for match ups. It works in reverse.

Your scheduling arguments hold no water.

All you have to do go to CBSsports.com com and look at the teams that made it the last 3 or 4 years as invites.   Look at the pattern.  We follow that and we get in.  That is what I am basing my arguments on.

Scheduling games against lesser opponents, while generating more win opportunities, also generates more bad loss opportunities.  Bad losses = losses to inferior opponents.

Also, I think -10 is close to or is a record for the lowest rated post in the history of this board.  Congrats?

I am sorry that my ideas are to advanced for you, but I am right. Your response only validates that.

Check out Gonzaga #25, don't you wish we were #25?? they play no one in the top 25 and yet they are ranked in the top 25. hum!!!

he if it works for them maybe it will work for us??????

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/teams/rpi/GONZAG/gonzaga-bulldogs

look at #24 Ohio St.  only 3 games against the top 25

http://www.cbssports...-state-buckeyes

#23 UCLA 0-2 against Top 25

#22   Memphishttp://www.cbssports.../memphis-tigers

1-4 against top 25 and 8-0 against 100-200 & 6-0 against 200+.  If that dosen't depress you as a husker fan nothing will. They will make tournament play and played 14 games again over 100. maybe we should try this schedule.

#21  Uconn,  this is just plain sick  1-1 against the top 25 14 games over 100.  I hope you are getting my point.

Yes, let us compare our schedule to Duke's. The team that has earned the ability to not play away non-conference games by earning a pedigree.

Edit: You can also add onto posts by using the edit button on the bottom right hand side of your post. Next to the quote window you love so much.

Edit #2: Gonzaga also has the ability to win their conference rather easily. It is very easy to gamble with a weak schedule when you have a 75% chance of getting an auto-bid.

Edit #3: He mad.

We're not Duke.  We don't play in a basketball player rich part of the country nor or we marquee enough to dictate our own schedule.

We're not in the WCC.  Makes no sense.

At this point you're just spamming the board.  Keep it up at your own risk.

Essentially, you want Iowa's schedule.

They even play Drake.

i have to prove my point,  I am making that,  It is not a matter of what Conference we play in.  It is about WHO we schedule.  As far as spamming,  I think it is just a matter of people not liking what I say. not how I  say it.  in the future i will put them in 1 or 2 posts.
