uneblinstu's post game chatter: ed 6, vol 10: Creighton

It really comes down to this.  Creighton is a mature team, Nebraska isn't.  Too many threes and not enough passes when our backs are against the wall.  We saw this against UAB, didn't we?  If nothing else, it was a relief that we came back to make it respectable the second half even though the game was clearly over.

We have too many players trying to make plays by themselves as if any comeback rides entirely on their own back.  Today I saw that from Shavon, Teran and Deverall, mostly in the first half.  I wouldn't call this selfishness, just lack of maturity and mental toughness.

Lots of young players on our team.  We'll see more games like this, but I trust our coaching staff will get this turned around by next year.

Bottom line, we were not mentally ready to start the game.  There may be a lot of reasons, but there is no excuse.  A good team has to get over that hurdle...I guess we will have other opportunities this year.

Another takeaway is that Hawkins is not redshirting.  He played minutes and in a hostile enviornment, he will be a better player for it.

Biggs, Tai and ray body language at times was brutal. Ray looked lost and like a freshman. Biggs and Tai must grow up quickly. They were easily flustered and were whining every time they came to the bench.

Dougie was as good as advertised.

Gibbs is a punk and needs to realize without Doug this team would be shit.

I didn't watch the game, other obligations.  So I'm sure my comments can be dismissed due to that fact and I may well be off base.  However, losing 12 of the last 16?!  I didn't realize that.  Creighton is a legit program, NU isn't.  It's time NU starts taking this annaul game as being the underdog and fighting and clawing to prove we're not.  It's not even a competitve series anymore.  Here's hopeing Miles can figure out how to beat these guys.  Its an important game every year.  Respect to Creighton.

I think the team was ready they are young and a veteran team went right at them. We settled down way to late. Unfortunately when you stop attacking the rim and settle for all jump shots that miss and they crush threes it gets ugly.

I can tell you tim and the staff kept preaching live at the rim. The team was stubborn and got our butt kicked

Agree dance, once we started attacking they were to slow to keep up. They just have better shooters at this point and made us pay big time for trying to play their game.

Frustrating considering we knew that's how we would have to beat them. If ever there were a game where Petteway should have tried driving to the hoop every possession, this was it. He was almost too unselfish in the first half.

Let's hope this doesn't backfire.  He wasn't aggressive enough and he saw the results.  Will he be over-aggressive from this point on?

Creighton packed in the lane pretty solid early and took away the lanes the Huskers wanted to attack and when CU got out to their lead they panicked a bit, it seemed.  I'm chalking it up to a lesson learned.  They're adequate from outside, but not good enough to rely on it.

Also, I wonder if it's time to let Webster come off the bench for a while until he starts settling in.  The flashes of talent are nice, but we need production.  I think we might have gotten more out of someone like Rivers tonight than we did Webster.

OK, there were some positives from last night.  Not many, but some.

We shot over 59% from the floor in the 2nd half and over 57% from 3 in the 2nd half while only taking 7 three-pointers in the last 20 minutes.  That suggests to me that they didn't just cash in their chips but still kept playing hard to the very end.  Good for them.

OK, that's what I got.  Anyone else?

We got punched in the face... hard.  Now they know the pain... know what it feels like to get punched in the face.  Does anyone think that they will want that feeling again??  No... so there is that plus.

Another plus is that we learned how to stop the bleeding (kind of).  We almost had to bleed out before we learned what needs to be done to stop the bleeding.

This is one of those games that does not just leave a sour taste in our mouths, but the coaches and players as well.  No one likes the taste, and no one will want it again.
