Huskers Open Pinnacle Bank Arena with Game One vs. UCLA

The Nebraska women’s basketball team makes its regular-season debut in its new home at Pinnacle Bank Arena, when the Huskers take on UCLA on Friday, Nov. 8, at Noon.

Two-time All-American and two-time first-team All-Big Ten forward Jordan Hooper leads four returning starters from a Husker squad that advanced to the 2013 NCAA Sweet 16, while All-Pac-12 forward Atonye Nyingifa leads a new-look bunch of Bruins from a team that went to the second round of the Big Dance a year ago.

Nebraska, ranked No. 17 in the preseason Associated Press Poll and No. 12 in the preseason USA Today Top 25, will face a Bruins team the entered the season at No. 25 in the USA Today rankings while receiving votes in the AP Poll.

Third-year coach Cori Close brings a new-look Bruins bunch to Lincoln for the season-opening battle with Nebraska. The Bruins return leading scorer and No. 3 rebounder Atonye Nyingifa and fellow senior Thea Lemberger from its 2013 team.

After losing four starters from last year’s team, UCLA was dealt injuries to a pair of players expected to contend for starting jobs this year - Kari Korver and Kacy Swain. Despite the losses, the Bruins still feature plenty of weapons.

Probable Starters:

Nebraska Cornhuskers
3 - Hailie Sample - 6-1 - Jr. - F
23 - Emily Cady - 6-2 - Jr. - F
35 - Jordan Hooper - 6-2 - Sr. - F
33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - So. - G
13 - Brandi Jeffery - 5-7 - Jr. - G

UCLA Bruins

11 - Atonye Nyingifa - 5-11 - Sr. - F
13 - Luiana Livulo - 6-3 - Jr. - C
1 - Thea Lemberger - 5-7 - Sr. - G
21 - Nirra Fields - 5-9 - So. - G
22 - Madeline Brooks - 5-8 - Jr. - G

UCLA leads the all-time series with Nebraska 4-1.

Nebraska was voted the preseason pick to win the Big Ten regular-season title by both conference coaches and media in 2014.

Jordan Hooper was a unanimous choice of Big Ten coaches to the preseason All-Big Ten team.

Nebraska will open its 2013-14 campaign with its highest preseason ranking in school history, as the Huskers start the year No. 12 in the USA Today Coaches Top 25

The middle-school youth will be seated on the West side (100/Lower Level) for the Sportsmanship Pep Rally. They will relocate immediately following the event, so doors to Pinnacle Bank Arena will not open to the public until 11 a.m. (60 minutes prior to tip-off). For the rest of the season, doors to Pinnacle Bank Arena will open 90 minutes prior to tip-off, our traditional time for open doors at women’s basketball home games. You may experience some minor slow-downs in getting to your seats on Friday

77-49 final. Hooper with a monster game! 27 points and 11 boards, Emily Cady with 12 points and Allie Havers with 14 points!

We looked good for the first game out of the box. Glad to see we're still mixing up defenses and switching to a zone through out the game!  I thought Brandi Jeffery played a fantastic game, coming up with loose rebounds and balls. She had 9 points. Emily could have had more points but got caught too far under the bucket to get the ball up and in more than once. Think I heard somewhere around 9700+ in attendance.

good to hear from you Noah!

That would have been an impressive performance against just about any team.  But to deliver a blow like that against a ranked team?  Wow.  Just wow.  And way to go Allie Havers!  I listened to Coatney and didn't see it, but my girl Allie turned in a pretty outstanding performance with 14 points in the 2nd half.  That almost matches the 19 points J Hoop had in the first half.

When is LOI signing day?  You seeing this, girls?  You're signing with a team that just destroyed a ranked UCLA squad.

Team looked good today.  UCLA only had 6 girls suited up.  Anybody know why?  That definitely didn't help them.

UCLA only had 6 players available today and most of their height was hurt.

Last year our first sub for Hooper or Cady was Meghin Williams.  I don't mean to knock on Meghin because she played to the best of her ability, but having Allie Havers come in this year is a HUGE plus for the team.  I mean this is going to be big for us this year. Theriot looked pretty today also.  Hopefully Jefferies outside shooting will get better.  If it does, this team could be really special.

Great to have a strong showing against a good team, regardless of their injuries. That said, I think the better takeaway is that despite a poor showing from beyond the arc, the offense rolled. Last year, the ladies lived and died by the three for much of the season, (happily, a lot more living than dying) so it's nice to see that not be the case from day one here.

I didn't see the game, but from what the radio guys were saying, it sounds like T is continuing to be a great source of energy off the bench. That's another great sign, and I hope she continues to love being a leader despite not being a starter.

Theroit had a nasty pass to the post in the second half that was just amazing.
