Ben Johnson is a nice up-and-coming assistant coach, but I'm really glad it isn't Harriman leaving. I think he's a big key to us taking that next step.

Johnson's been a pretty significant recruiter for us.  He's got ties all over the upper mid west and Big Ten circles.  They're pretty comparable.  It would be a significant blow.

>Strickland?

That was my first thought as well.  It will be interesting to see what happens if he does decide to take the job.

Johnson's done well for us, no doubt, but I think Harriman is going to be a flat-out star as an assistant coach.

Strickland?

This program already has one arm tied behind it's back when it comes to recruiting.  We need someone with solid D1 recruiting experience.

If I were TM, I would ask myself what area of the country he needs to bolster his recruiting, given his staff (sans Johnson), then go find an assistant from a mid major school who has demonstrated he can recruit that part of the country.

Losing Johnson will be a blow, but I have to think a young and upcoming assistant coach would be interested in joining this staff and being apart of a success that's never been seen at Nebraska, so maybe this will turn out to be a blessing in disguise with the right hire

Strickland's strongest recruiting ties are in Texas, right? That would overlap with the current staff. We definitely need someone with strong recruiting ties in the Midwest. Ideally in the Chicago, Indianapolis or Minneapolis region, IMO.

Watched him talking with Tai and the family when he was here for his trip.

He worked it hard so I think he could close the deal.

But with that said he most likely doesn't have any ties to the AAU.

But he did work for the Mavs after playing there, so on that hand he has that going for him.

Hard to have ill feelings toward Johnson for this.  If he would've broke the commitment for any other program it would've been weak, but going back home and to your alma mater is a totally different animal.  I know if I was a coach somewhere and Nebraska offered me a job, it would be nearly impossible for me to turn down.

I read that Coach Miles asked for a three year commitment from each assistant. This is why Chin was never offered an assistants role as he would not commit to the three years. So much for Ben Johnson's word if this happens.

I don't think that is true.

I just don't understand why people bring up Strickland's name. I know he is a former player, but he has no experience. I feel like that would be very risky.

Seriously?  It's not that hard to figure out.  Alum, NBA player with connections all over the basketball community, publicly campaigned for the job when it came open the first time and hasn't been shy about saying if a spot ever came open he'd be interested.  It's only natural his name came up.  I don't know if it'll happen or should, but his name will be speculated about.  I personally think a spot like Chin's would be a better place for him to start than in Johnson's spot, but if there's a guy I'd take a chance on, it'd be someone like Strick.

Chin's ties to Chicago AAU could be drying up soon. He coached AAU like 3 or 4 years ago right? I doubt he has strong relationships with kids on the 2015 team.

Would it be better to bring in a current AAU coach as an assistant? Not sure. Just asking.

In terms of actual coaching, I think Strickland would be great to have. If Miles really wanted strickland though, wouldn't he have hired him after chin left?

Agree. I think the assistant will most likely come from a successful mid major. Not ruling out chin or strickland though.

Everyone brings up Strickland fot this job, but Tyronn Lue would be more qualified.

Played for Nebrasketball in college.

23rd overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft.

Played for the Los Angeles Lakers, where he won two NBA championships in his first three seasons.

In 2009, Lue became Director of Basketball Development for the Boston Celtics.

While at Nebraska:

He finished his Nebraska career ranked third on the all-time list in assists (432)

Fourth in three-pointers made (145)

Fifth in steals (154)

Seventh in scoring (1,577).

Declared for the NBA draft after his Junior season

Led Nebraska in assists in each of his three seasons

Finished his career tied with Dave Hoppen for most games with 30 or more points (7)

I could see Strickland as a better fit in Chin's old position, rather than Johnson's position.

I think the homerun hire would be Tyronn Lue and Chin to fill the 2 vacant coaching spots.

Wanted to jump in.  Hugh loss because he was a great recruiter, young, and seemed to really connect with the players.  But can't blame him for going back home.

I just hope that this isn't a sign of things to come with Nebraska losing good assistants again.  Doc had some good assistants when he first came to Lincoln and then wasn't able to keep them.

Imo this would be a step down for lue. He could be in line for a head nba coaching job soon.

Yeah, I can see that.

But if you get out the check book and pay him what he's worth, then you might have a coach who is qualified to make the step up to head coach if Miles ever decides to leave Nebraska.
