Sadler wants to be a head coach again, and this is the time when coaching carousel starts to spin.

“If I do it, I want it to be in a situation where I have a legitimate
opportunity to win basketball games, where things are important to
people and they want to win,”

What the hell does that mean?

coaching at a place that can legitimately win games =/= coaching at a big time program.  He didn't say that.  Another UTEP level program could qualify as that opportunity.  I think he just wants to coach at a place that takes basketball seriously, and you could fairly legitimately argue that Nebraska didn't for at least the first half of his time here.

I love how Doc thinks he's ready to be the head coach of a big time program because he's been sitting on KU's bench for 6 months.

Solich thought it would work by travelling the country and talking to other coaches.

Dude landed at Ohio.

My reaction's pretty tame. Doc gave everything he had for 6 years and I can't disrespect anyone who does that.

I wish him the best and I hope he gets another crack and makes the most of it.

Yup.

And has been very successful there. Much more than his replacement was here.

I think coaches need to recognize their level. Had Coach Sadler stayed at UTEP he might be on a run of consecutive NCAA bids. Sad truth is that recruits would rather be in El Paso than Lincoln at this point in time. And a coach trying to rebuild a program needs to be an ace recruiter (Tom Crean, Tom Izzo, John Calipari) which Doc did not bring to Nebraska. I understand the lure of the big conferences, but the appeal fades when you get fired. I hope he gets another shot at a C-USA level conference.

"....I threw all the other things out the door as fast as I could and got down here as fast as I could before he changed his mind"   speaking of when Bill Self offered him a position.   Pretty good line.

Nothing in there strikes me the wrong way after a quick read.   Still love Doc.  Really love Tim Miles though.

Doc's problem is he can't recruit & he can't coach offense (along with his horrible roster & game management skills).  You can only go so far in a big boy conference with those deficiencies.

Look at last years roster then look at this years.  We only average 2 pts per game less this year than last year.

Look at that stat & tell me that doesn't tell the whole story.  If Doc had ONLY the roster Miles had to work with this year, we might not have averaged 40 pts per game this year.

There was a reason UTEP fans weren't too upset when Doc left.

Doc was a good guy & I held on hope for too long that he would get it done.  We made one horrible hire with Collier (or at least a horrible hire in which we didn't require Collier to bring his staff with him which included Matta & a young grad asst named Brad Stevens).  Then Collier f's us & leaves weeks before fall semester starts limiting our search options.  I don't even think Spinilli was still on staff, so we couldn't have made him interim coach for a season.  Our options were seriously limited.  Finding a guy with  pulse to take over at that late stage was a minor miracle.

I'll say this though, the class Doc had last year wasn't bad (Shields, Parker, Jerran Young (check him out at Wright St), Alihodzic (UAB), & the other big guy who's name escapes me.  I like Miles' transfers & 1st class much better though.  Miles' is putting together a roster that makes sense & can compete in the Big10. Doc was putting together a class that would do nothing more than ge an NIT invite every 2-3 years.

Did you actually write this with a straight face? On one hand you state that Frank has been successful in Ohio and in the next paragraph you criticize Doc for his recruiting acumen while at Nebraska? Please show me where Frank has shown one ounce of recruiting acumen either at Nebraska or Ohio! And you seriously can't count Nebraska's left overs.

Maybe you can, but before you say what you did, I'd like to know how many Ohio players from the last couple of years you can name?

Yes, he has had some success there.  But Ohio is nowhere near a "big time program" like Smiles was talking about Sadler landing at.  Solich is at the appropriate level for his coaching abilities.  Will Sadler land at a "big time program" after serving as KU's director of basketball operations?  Doubtful.  Hopefully he'll find his Ohio and success will come.

Frank Solich recruited Mike Rozier, Irving Fryar, and Eric Crouch, to name a few.  Not bad if you ask me.

Just tell the Jayhawks that Doc Sadler was our Turner Gill.

They'll understand that we've gone on to better things, and their football programs has gone on (and back) to bigger things.

Which comes first, KU football back to a bowl game or Nebraska hoops to the NCAA tournament.

I'll bet on the latter.

I dont think I would take that.  More than half the teams make a bowl game in college football. Roughly 20% of teams make the Big Dance.
