Bugeaters1 Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 I hope Berke's injury isn't to bad. I'm guessing a bruised thigh. Quote
Cazzie22 Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 Our depth came through for us tonight. Good offense in the first half and not the best defense in the 2nd. Winning comfortably without Gary and Berke and with Williams in foul trouble has to be encouraging. Need everyone healthy fast. Bugeaters1, cornfed24-7, Faux Mike Peltz and 1 other 2 2 Quote

49r Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 They out hustled and out efforted us all night. Little bit disappointing but we were without a couple of our starters for most of the game and still won comfortably. Took some hits to our Pomeroy ranking, we didn't cover our number and Creighton just lost to Texas A&M. cornfed24-7 1 Quote

hskr4life Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 Not too worried about that 2nd half. At one point we had a lineup of Woster, Sam, Conner, Cale, and Meah. Now getting Berk and Gary back….. that’s a worry. cornfed24-7, Cazzie22, Bugeaters1 and 3 others 1 5 Quote

Vinny Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 Hip flexor makes sense. Announcers thought he took a shot and it would be a bruise but the replays never showed an obvious hit to his leg on that play. Quote

Faux Mike Peltz Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 Pretty fun game to attend. A pretty good crowd, I’d estimate 12,000+ Meah absolutely ate the inside, all his points came on dunks. South Dakota did have a 7’ center, but Braxton was on a different level. Our depth definitely paid off. To lose Gary and Berke and have Brice in foul trouble. It was nice to have some guys who could still maintain our lead. I actually think Gavin is in his head, just lacks some confidence out there. At this point, I see why he is still in the rotation, but honestly Cale has more experience and can handle the ball better and makes better passes. I do think Gavin will hit his stride at some point. If Connor shoots like the past couple of games we are a completely different team. Remarkable we went from a “if Brice doesn’t get 27 we are doomed” mentality to “we are pretty well balanced” haha. basketballjones, cornfed24-7, nuhusker7 and 1 other 4 Quote
Norm Peterson Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 Seemed like So Dak was way more physical. First half, the refs swallowed their whistles, which allowed So Dak to get away with a lot of bumping and hand checks and generally physical play, which I think directly lead to our injuries. Last 10 minutes it's like the refs remembered they had whistles and started making up for lost time. Faux Mike Peltz and Cazzie22 2 Quote
Faux Mike Peltz Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 Agreed, the last 10 minutes seemed to drag on. That last foul on Griffith with just a few seconds left was not needed. Ref should’ve just swallowed the whistle cornfed24-7, Cazzie22 and HuscurAdam 3 Quote
nuhusker7 Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 This first 12 minutes we played great, assuming everyone comes back healthy I have a ton of hope for this year. The second half was brutal all around. But we showed we can win against adversity, and we got a ton of real game minutes with guys who will need to step up at some point this year…. But hopefully we don’t need them all at the same time again I was thinking Berke triple before his injury. We need him back and healthy ASAP. Gavin reminds me a little bit of a freshman year Roby. He just needs a little bit of muscle and some confidence and he could do some damage. Connor has to have this mentality every game. It seems like he’s finally getting comfortable with the idea of the 100% green light that Fred gives. Most defenses will be better than USD, but he still needs to fire away. Brice is Brice. Not much more to say besides he is the guy. Team Berke. GBR roscoe 1 Quote

Huskerpapa Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 Good win against a decent team. We played most of the game sans two starters. Loved that Essigian took a major step forward on offense tonight. Good to see. I was a bit disappointed with our defense effort and our general lack of intensity. We also did a below average job with our ball handling. Perhaps I am not giving enough credit to South Dakota. Their ability to take it to the basket was a big concern, we have some players that cannot stop the dribble drive. Our bigs could not close out on them either. So, something to fix moving forward. Vinny, Serenity Now and cornfed24-7 3 Quote

Agreed about Gavin. He needs confidence and you can tell Fred is trying to help him with that with some wrinkles designed for him. For us to become the team we are capable of, we need Gavin to command minutes. He’s fully capable of giving us 18 minutes a game, 6 points, and 3/4 rebounds with + defense. I’m really high on him and I hope Fred can get it out of him. Vinny, HuskerBB and Art Vandalay 3 Quote

Busch Light Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 Also, our bigs closing out defensively and jumping is going to be a problem if not corrected. Michigan State and Indiana, I can almost guarantee, are going to convert those into fouls. You are 6’9”+, close out under control with your hand up. I’m sure the staff will be all over it once they watch the tape. cornfed24-7 1 Quote

Right now, Gavin's defense is comparable to Wilcher's. He seems to be a tweener, where he lacks perimeter quickness and body mass in the paint. Can it be fixed? Perhaps in the off-season. So for now, it has to be overcome with effort/intensity or it has to be hidden through schemes. Gavin could be an important cog for our machine; but right now, he has no rhythm on offense and he is a defensive liability, so, his court time could be at risk. Honestly, I was thinking the same thing about Connor; but he has elevated his game the past three outings. cornfed24-7 1 Quote
B-town hoopsfan Posted November 28 Report Posted November 28 Let down defensively and intensity wise was pretty predictable after the hard 40 minutes vs Creighton. A bit disheartening how many straight line drives they had in the second half but the line ups we had out there were pretty funky also. feel pretty good about our front court assuming everyone’s healthy. Things look better with meah setting more picks and handling the ball less up top. Morgan is a bit clunky but is pretty skilled offensively and seems to rebound at a high clip. Berke does it all and has been a much better rebounder than expected. Not enough positive things to say about what Gary does for us. I don’t see it with GG on defense. Don’t think he’s ever gonna be a good on ball defender. I do think he eventually runs into making some shots and athleticism/length wise he brings some great things off the bench. I just wish he was stronger with the ball when he has it in his hands. had alil higher hopes for Uhlis too. Didn’t think he would light up the score board but thought he would take care of the ball and be somewhat of a defensive stopper….he doesn’t look like either so far It’s great to have a guy like Jacobsen who you can throw into the rotation in a pinch but doesn’t have to be in it every game too.
