I wonder and let's see  ..... how much of what Potts took to the bench can Hargrove bring to the floor?  I know it's a tall order for a freshman coming out of a small HS but dang i saw some of her play last year and she looked more than a little like Jordan Hooper.  Maybe she can be to 2024 a little bit what Potts was to 2023 bc we need more than what the others can bring.

Glad we survived this game without any injuries.  We are still searching for a lineup that meshes and a third scoring option.  Amy was displeased with our focus in the third quarter and I thought our effort was not very good.  
 

This schedule doesn’t seem to be getting us prepared for B1G play.  I will get to see the team live for the first time against Minnesota.  Then I can better assess this team.

 

We have to do better on post entry passes.  Alexis needs to shoot, not throw the ball, Hargrove needs to learn where her defender is as she missed at least two easy scoring chances by turning the wrong way and Petrie has to rebound better.

 

Seems like I am nit picking after an easy win.  We can and must play better.

Inexplicable observations:

-we didn’t play very well and won by 45!  Ask yourself objectively, who was our player of the game?  I can’t name one.  Maybe Hake by default.


- while the box score won’t show it, both Hargrave and Bozan outplayed AM for most of the game, again mostly by default because none played very well.

Whoever coaches our bigs will be exposed when we play an Iowa team that still has at least two bigs better than ours (and yes I know we miss Potts and AM is an AA candidate).

OK, I can name a player of the game - and with no default needed.  Hake easily would win that award.  16 points on 50% shooting, 5 of 9 outside the arc, four rebounds, four assists, two steals, no turnovers and effective defense  ....  all in just over half the game time.  Double the playing time, as tho she had played the entire game, and those are close to Caitlyn Clark numbers.  I know it's not against quality competition, but that's the competition that was in the game.   

 

AM did not have a great game, but mostly just bc her shots from the near the hoop didn't go in. Season long she is shooting just over 50%.  Yesterday she was three for twelve. If three more shots had gone in to make 50%, she would have scored 16 points, had 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.  But they didn't go in so I agree - not a good game.

Hake is a streaky player. When she is on it can be pretty good. Her defense is better. Overall this is her best start to a season. With Potts out we need someone to step up. It may need to come from the guards because so far neither Petrie or Hargrove have shown to be able to lessen the loss of Potts to this point. Hopefully both will get better as the season goes along.

It's funny that last year people were praising the person that coached the bigs.

Markowski is getting a lot more attention this year. We still are working through the process of getting her the ball in good spots and she also needs to make quicker decisions since she is drawing 2 and sometimes 3 players sagging in on her. I feel like it will come. Best cure is she passes to a guard who makes them pay with a made three.

Pretty sure Bozan was supposed to have 6-5 stats when she first signed up. She's seems to be getting up to speed with USA college ball. Good background in Europe. Has the typical old school European ball skills, ...less one on one type play like the US is sometimes. 

 

With her size... hope the staff can get her used to crashing the boards and adding up the rebounds. But she's only a freshman, so will develop and adapt. Glad she's on our squad.
