Emmett Olson goes in round 4 to Miami - all 3 of the Huskers went higher than expected. Really great for those guys and continues to show you can come to NU and be a high draft pick.

I really like Coach Bolt, but to have 3 Top 5 round draft picks on this team and miss the NCAA tournament is a hugely disappointing season. That's 2 clunkers in a row.

Big roster turnover coming again next season without rock stars at SS, 2B and your Friday pitcher. Also losing your closer and your setup guy. Probably losing your Saturday starting pitcher too. Big, big off-season for the baseball coaching staff. Hope Childress has some magic left.

True.  That's a disappointment, and there is uncertainty ahead (there always is).

But there are a number of positives for recruiting: (i) the new pitching coach, and (ii) 2023 draft results.

And there have been serious injury issues (Nebraska seems to have more than its share . . . in every sport).

Consider these excerpts from an April 2023 story on the injury-cursed Will Walsh:

  • Will Walsh didn’t play baseball during his first year of college. The following year, he barely saw the field. In both instances, Walsh was battling injuries.  “I had Tommy John’s surgery,” Walsh recalled. “I had my hamate bone removed, had my right labrum redone, and a left MCL repair.” Each of the injuries required surgery, which nearly derailed the Nebraska utility player’s career.
  • Through each of the health setbacks, the Kansas City native continued to stay positive while working toward a recovery. The reward of his labor has finally arrived.  Walsh has landed a spot in Nebraska’s pitching rotation. He is scheduled to start Sunday’s series finale at Michigan.
  • Walsh was elevated to the Huskers’ rotation after a pair of dominant outings last month. He struck out 15 batters in back-to-back pitching appearances. Currently, Walsh owns a 2.87 ERA, which ranks among the best on the team.
  • On Nebraska’s official roster, Walsh is listed as a utility player. He’s a 2-way contributor who was in the Huskers’ opening day starting lineup. When not pitching, Walsh plays first base or designated hitter.
  • “Anyone that was around our team and watched us take (batting practice) was like ‘Who is that guy?’” Bolt said. “He was dropping bombs. He’s been around (and) always had a great attitude. The game is paying him back.”

Make that 4 picks in the Top 10 rounds - Kaminska goes to the Rockies in Round 10, again way over his projection.

Our best draft since the '05 team. I don't believe we have ever had 3 guys taken in the first 4 rounds before. This team matched '05 with 4 guys taken in the top 10 rounds, but the '05 team had a few other guys taken later. Don't think we will have any other '23 guys taken tomorrow. I believe '01 had 4 guys in the top 10 rounds, too.

Former Husker Braxton Bragg also went high after transferring, round 8. That's a lot of talent that we simply didn't take advantage of having.
