We do NOT have a Big Ten caliber point guard sitting on our roster. We need to get one. That is priority #1. I think there are guys out there who fit the bill and I am very hopeful that we will land one of them. I think we have enough other ballhandlers to get by if we can just get a solid starter through the portal. Q is NOT that guy.

We're lacking a quality starting big to replace Derrick Walker. That's priority #2. I think there are guys out there who would fit the bill. I'm hoping we can land *at least* one of them. At this point, I don't have a high level of confidence that either Blaise or Wilhelm will a) be healthy enough and b) develop enough to be the kind of big man we need in our starting lineup to compete in this league. We gotta find someone. I'm somewhat optimistic, but y'know ...

We already have ample, decent shooting guards/wings. I use that term "decent" advisedly. None of them would be world beaters, necessarily, but virtually all of them would be able to at least contribute on a decent Big Ten team. If we had to go to battle with the 2-guards/wings we have on the roster, we could make it work. Adding Brice Williams would certainly strengthen this position group.

The 5th starter could either be a stretch-4 like Juwan Gary or another guard. We have enough guards to play 4-out. I hope Juwan's off-season surgery was successful and that he'll return better than ever. But he has not demonstrated the perimeter or interior shooting ability I would want at that spot. Great rebounder. Great defensively. Lacks shooting touch inside as well as outside. I think we could do better in the portal but I'd still like him in a reserve role, or as a starter if we don't find an upgrade through the portal.

What I don't want is I don't want an entire roster overhaul.

I want to see Keisei return. And I want to see Jamarques return. I want to see what Ramel can do when he isn't trying to portray the other team's best player as a member of the scout team. I think Ramel could be a future star. He has great length and he's a 3-level scorer. Does he have enough dawg in him to also be a defensive stopper?

I want to see CJ back. I think he can fulfill a role on this team and be successful at it. I think Sam Hoiberg can play the role of sparkplug off the bench.

We're not bereft of talent. Sure, there are a couple of very key pieces we need to go get, and it would be nice to augment a couple of other spots. But I feel like for the first time in the Hoiberg era: a) we have a foundation of players to build around where we don't need to scrap the whole lineup and start over; and b) we made enough progress year over year to sell potential portal recruits on the idea that they could come here and be the missing piece needed to put us over the hump to the next level up.

Fred can be successful here and I don't think he needs to completely scrap this roster and start over. Just add some important, key pieces.

Did anyone else see that Grant Nelson from NDSU entered the transfer portal today?  Will we try to make a run at him?  Put up some decent numbers and he played with Sam G. too.

Chances are good that pretty much anyone with an open spot will try to make a run at him I'd say...so yeah, we'll probably do so too.

Exhibit A:

Arkansas fans seem to think that they're the destination if he does not get drafted, which to be fair, the NBA is probably the most likely outcome for him.

What I'm saying here is don't get your hopes up on Nelson becoming a 'sker.

Not saying you're wrong, but it's just kind of interesting that his name was brought up several weeks ago, long before he declared for the draft or entered the portal.

Brought up here?  Wouldn't surprise me.  But that reddit thread indicates that his name has been mentioned for weeks among other schools' fanbases too.  Just sayin'

Jay Pal out of Omaha Central has entered the portal. Had a good season for Campbell. He put up 26 and 10 in the conference championship game.
6’9”, athletic, decently skilled and old. He’ll get some looks.

Liked him in high school.  Didn't get the headlines but did the dirty work.  Very good on the boards.

Names to keep an eye on per Robin: RayJ Dennis from Toledo (although is likely an Illinois lean) and Tre White from USC

Here, let's play a game of "Never Have I Ever."

Never have I ever seen a highlight video for a kid that shows him missing 4 mid-range jumpers in a row.

Despite Washut’s name-dropping speculations, you’ve gotta figure Nebrasketball is in a mode of watching for something great and unexpected to come along—like the heart-history player we didn’t/couldn’t take last season.

What they do with these last two scholarships Im very intrigued in.

I'd say every spot on the court has a solid starter and backup, so do they take a younger big, whether it be portal or freshman. Fwiw, Ashton Smith entered the portal around the same time Wilhelm did, and he still has 3 years of eligibility left, and he was someone they looked at in his initial recruitment. One of KUs bigs entered the portal today and he also has 3 years left. Options in the portal for a younger guy that could play at this level may be easier to find than a high school big this late in the process.

I think there's an argument where they hold that last scholarship, and I'd be for it completely. It just depends on how everything develops.

And one was an airball, no less!

I don't know the details of this player's experience, but here's an issue for freshman transfers in general--especially the five-star / high-hype types (you know, the ones with can't miss expectations for getting to the NBA immediately).

When the lofty expectations aren't met--even if they play well as freshmen--they leave.  They go somewhere else . . .  presumably, under the belief that the failure-to-meet-expectation is the school's fault: not his.  That's a potential culture problem for the next school--you know, black-hole types of problems with ball distribution.
