I think it's in the first segment of the day.  Look down the page for

8336 - PBA was packed on both Saturday and Sunday for Husker hoops…did Nebraska get blanked this weekend or pull through in men’s hoops?

I listened to the segment.
I mean…ok, sure, Amy can impress you in conversation with her basketball acumen. I would imagine most college basketball head coaches could impress someone with their high level of basketball knowledge in a conversation. It’s more about relaying that info to their players, getting them to buy in, being able to develop those players over 3-4 years and see them max out their full potential as players etc.

It’s about using all your allotted scholarships, for crying out loud!

Gabee Marshall and Kate Martin return to the Iowa Hawkeyes for next season.

We can say what else we want about Bluder, but we gotta admit she can rope in the recruits, she can develop them into players, she can weave players into a team, she can coach the team to success, and she can keep her recruits home.

Wait a minute on this freshman thing. Cain and Kissinger were a huge impact. Sam, Ashtyn, and Brown were impact. Issy was kind of impact, and for goodness sake Markowski was an enormous impact just last year. This might be about this year's freshman, but nothing more than that.

Here is my problem.  As coaches players are supposed to get better year after year.  Counting on freshmen coming in as complete packages and having a huge impact is a complete joke.  Half the high school players have no idea what be defended actually is.  In spite of that we manage to make players less year over year.  Seriously most the players you mentioned went backwards when they got here.

Point guard don't do passing, dribbling or drills finishing at the rim and through contact.  We only want 3 point shooting.

Bigs no boxing out, no drop steps, no euro step, no contact drills, no crashing offensive glass, no clearing out the lane.  We only want 3 point shooting.

God forbid anybody get to the middle of the zone and collapse it.  We want no midrange, we only want 3 point shooting.

Basically we are offended by any non three point shooting aspects of basketball.  It is after all beneath us.

Thanks Nets.    I'm sure that I'm no judge of one's coaching knowledge or skill.  I wouldn't know 'Good' Coaching even if I saw it.

But, I can see the Results of Coaching on the court.   Just look at what Fred Hoiberg and his new assistant coaches have been able to do with the team this year, compared to prior seasons; with supposedly 'lesser' talent, even after the number of injuries.  Listen to his press conferences, and him talking about developing his players and coaching them up.

True. It pains me to say it but I gotta give the devil her due - Lisa Bluder is an absolute force and she has built a program that is quite a force.

Player development has been a topic in this forum for some time.

For the heck of it, I compared career stats between Kate Cain and Megan Gustafson. Not sure if fair comparison, but Interesting, none the less.

Nice work @12dozen .  🙏 (clapping)   I distilled some of your table date for easier comparison.  I guess we can conclude Megan Gustafson is the more efficient player (at least as far as scoring, but not as good a blocker - i.e. keeping the opponent from scoring).

Maybe a more important question is progress of each through their careers. I'll try to develop a similar table for Kate Cains progression when I get time.

(Sorry for the Truncated format.,  the program leaves a little bit to be desired in it's editing capabilities regarding tables.  (or lack of capabilities 😬)

I was more interested in the development, year to year, over their careers.  The total career numbers are excellent for both.

What stood out to me, was how similar their freshman years were.  Kate's stats, other than free throw percentage, did not vary much, from year to year.   Gustafson's stats improved noticeably, from one year to the next.  I'm sure there are many factors that contribute to this, including coaching, self-motivation, talent, athleticism, surrounding roster, maturation, health, etc.

Each year stats are listed.  Not sure another table would be needed to see level of progress, one year to the next.

Don't forget Iowa has had a big advantage in point guards for the last six years.  Big key for getting the ball where and when the post wants and needs it.

Also don't forget that Iowa's all conference point guard before Clark was committed to Nebraska before Shepard and Eckhorst blew it all up.

Gustafson may have been the best offensive post player in the country her last 2 years, whereas Kate was a nice B10 player but not near Gustafson offensively...who was? Lets also note that its hard to go too crazy on 7.5 shots a game even at 55%.  Cain was more about the D with 3 B10 All defensive teams and all the blocks. BTW Nebraska went 2-2 vs Iowa the 4 times they played in 17-18 and 18-19 as it is a team game requiring role players and chemistry, and that 3rd place 17-18 team was very good thx to Whitish, Eliely, Simon, Cincore, Kissinger, Morton, Wood, Stallworth, Blackburn, Mitchell, etc.  Bigger question is, why does Alexis M. only get 9-10 shots now? Answer is wing to post pass has never been a big part of the offense and Izzy beats her to the low post a lot of the time.

Tuesday 2 21

Maryland spanked Iowa by 28 tonight. Maryland looked good the whole game. Hit their shots.  96-68

Heavy and quick defense against Cizano (sp) and Clark. Game was over early.  Iowa's no defense really hurt themselves.

Aw gee, Iowa lost? Shucks, you hate to see it.

🤣😂🙌 Schadenfreude in full effect anytime I see Iowa WBB lose. Sorry, not sorry. I’m wondering if they took tonight’s game too lightly because they were looking ahead to their Saturday Gameday rematch against Indiana at Carver Arena. Too bad, so sad

I believe Kate played to her ability level. She played well with her teammates and made the most of her physical skills.  Gustafson, a better athlete, was brought along by a staff that develops posts.  Watch the freshman post at Iowa develop into a force next year.

This whole thing is nothing against Kate Cain, who is an amazing talent in her own right; but can we honestly say that she reached her peak.  Could she have achieved greater heights with different coaching?   One could argue that her first year was close to being her best, if not her best.

It is an honest question.  I'm not so sure, but I believe that a talent like that deserves the best coaching we can provide!  Indeed, we must, if we expect to attract top-tier talent.

I think one thing to remember is some players continue to develop and reach the best version of themselves in there 20's. That could be after college. Then some players may have reached there best physical level when they are 19 or 20. This is one reason why having good coaches is so important. Good coaching can help them to see the game better (the game slows down for them) so even when the physical level may have peaked, their IQ helps them to continue to play better.

I am not trying to disparage Kate Cain.  She was an excellent prospect (ranked No. 82 in the nation by ESPN as a senior). She had an excellent career. She was invited to a WNBA camp. Nothing to sneeze about.

This conversation is about general post player development, related to this staff. We don't have a ton of post players to compare, in 7 years. (Kate, Alexis in progress).  I've used the Iowa posts since we are familiar with them, and their careers are in similar time frames.  Also, Iowa is in the same conference, and has a reputation for developing post players. Might as well compare to someone that does it well.

This comparison, might be more realistic. Gustafson, in her senior year, was the national POY.  Hard to match that.  Czinano was an ESPN 3* recruit.

Again, so little information to compare, not sure any conclusions can be made.  I do find it interesting to look at.
