Is there an update on Haiby? because we are a completely different team without her. This team cant create offense against good teams without her.

Our guards were missing in action at both ends of the court.  Tough task at Maryland.  We cannot be a confident team when we play the top teams in our league.  Some ladies are going to have to raise their level of play.

Haiby and maybe Mendelsohn will help some, but this team is just deeply disappointing.  Defense clearly worse than last year and it wasn’t that great then.  Of the 4 returning starters only Lizzy seems not to have regressed offensively.

Yes VT is very good, but that’s really the point.  Last year NU and VT had very similar seasons - very good but not great records, all-conference centers and disappointing first round NCAA tournament losses.  VT hit the transfer market, developed what they had coming back and got better.  We didn’t and got worse.

At this point we will end up with 12-14 losses if we do not get our guard play turned around. We can talk about missing players from last year but we have enough talent to be better than what we have seen so far. Last year we had good guard play which led to a very good year. Maybe a change in the starters so we get off to a quicker start but Amy gets pretty set so outside of an injury do not see it changing. Do not think Maggie will add much once she comes over from volleyball. Amy will bring her along slowly as she will need to catch up to what we do. Only practice time can help that. Agree we needed a 4-5 from the transfer portal. Not too late to right the ship but it needs to start now. I will be OK with a loss to Maryland if we are doing the right things on the court. If we get another 20+ point loss it could be a long year.

I think we will have a few more 20 pt losses between Maryland Indiana Iowa Michigan Ohio State. 

 

The effort is just not there. Its almost like Amy told Markowski to just stand there and put your arm up as we need you on the court because we have no backups. Jazz just stands there and watches the girls run right by her. I dont think we will have to many games where we hold a team to not a high score because of our defense and the only way we keep up with them is if we are on scoring that night. Feel like thats kind of Amys mentality for this year.

We are a poor road team because on the road you need to be tough and resilient to poor officiating and have good leadership.  We have no seniors playing right now and our guards are not very physical and don't seem to have the mental toughness needed especially on the road.

HUD - We do have seniors, Jaz and Issie are really seniors. Not sure why they are listed as Juniors. Yes both played during the covid year and can take an extra year as Sam has done if they choose to. Sam was listed as a junior last year as well.

Last night was the first time I've spent in a long while watching the WBB team (outside of the occasional clip I've seen on SM).  It was hard to watch.  Outside of the VB team, what sport has had consistent success in the past 10-15 years at NU?  What the heck has happened to the athletic department?  Meanwhile up I-80 in Omaha, Creighton is enjoying a successful VB team (not as good as the Huskers but still a darn good team), successful MBB and WBB, and a pretty good men's soccer team as well.  Is it because they don't have a FB team to worry about?

 

I just can't figure out how almost the entire NU athletic department has gotten into such a funk.

Generally non-competitive in everything else.  It's quite sad.

I have a question....   Isn't the scholarship limit, for Division I WBB, fifteen (15)?  Unless I'm missing someone, including Haiby, Mendelson, and Dillard, I count only 13 players. It seems our bench is short players.  Why?  Shouldn't we use all available scholarships?  It's like a self imposed sanction.

Sorry, but I keep saying it...defense.  We just don't play aggressive defense. Watched the game with a focus on our defense. If you watch Maddie & Hake....they are on top of the guard they're supposed to cover........ they didn't play here last year.

 

VT wasn't extremely quick. They had a good mix of offense and defense. And they were much better shooters...across their roster.  Reminded me of Gonzaga. Both team were more experienced by far. The teams we have lost to are much better defensively.

 

But...our roster does seem to have enough quickness that it could happen.  Real defense just doesn't seem to be a major focus of playing the game. 

 

Disappointing loss. We were slow to get out of the gate.

And Jazz made the All B1G Defense 1st team last year.  Not looking like a repeat performance. (so far)

Jazz usually gets the other teams best defender...so that makes life difficult for her. Alexis and Weidner are also getting attention defensively too. That's what good defensive schemes do...guard the best of the other team..... It ain't rocket science.

 

When other teams play us straight up defensively, we have more success.

Could not agree with you more.  Defense and rebounding are how you win road games. Limit the other teams scoring, no second chance and let your defense get you easy buckets.  I really had high hopes that Coach Williams would hire a defensive specialist, but alas bigs shooting 3's is all that seems to matter to this staff.
