Roundup of In-State Recruiting Misses

Active in-state guys we wanted but didn't get out of HS:

Jr. Max Murrell, 4.9/3.0 in 14 min/game

So. Hunter Sallis, 5.1/2.9, 33% from 3

So. Chucky Hepburn, 9.7/3.7/2.8, 39% from 3

Fr. Jasen Green redshirting

Fr. Isaac Traudt redshirting

Active in-state guys we said "eff it" out of HS:

Sr. Baylor Schierman, 12.0/9.3, 44% from 3

Sr. Sam Griesel, 10.9/5.1/4.4

Sr. John Tonje, 15.1/6.3, 38% from 3

Sr. Josia Allick, 9.5/8.0 in 29 min/game

Jr. Charlie Easley, 9.0/2.9/1.3, 42% from 3

So. Frankie Fidler, 11.0/5.5 in 31 min/game

Fr. Luke Jungers, 7.3/3.1, 31% from 3

Not sure where to list the Arops or Donovan Williams because we didn't really blow them off coming out of HS. I'm including Easley in this group, though, because he was a walk-on who is now a scholarship D1 player. And we didn't offer him.

But, anyway, who's having more of an impact: The guys we whiffed on or the guys we spurned?

Just looking at the two groups, it makes me think maybe you need to be patient with a kid and give him time to develop.

Speaking of which, Kevin Cross is currently averaging 16.1 ppg, 6.0 bds, 4.1 assists while hitting 84.8% of his FTs and 55.3% from the floor.

Now how deflated do you feel?

Also what position he was asked to play

He plays center at Tulane. He's basically the same size as Derrick Walker. When you look at his numbers, he really looks like Derrick Walker.

No room for a post player who could handle the ball, was a good passer, and you could put on the floor as a freshman because we needed to pick up guys like Elijah Wood and Keon Edwards. STAR CITY BABY!!!

Right, buts that is as a senior in the AAC, not a freshman in the B1G. But, of the guys who actually got on the court Fred's first year, Cross is definitely the one I thought had the most potential and would've liked to see him stick around.

Worth noting that the best team Kevin Cross has played this year is KP No. 85 Nevada, and he had 5 points and 4 fouls in 14 minutes in that one. Otherwise he's beat up on some pretty not good teams.

He was terrible his sophomore year at Tulane then made a big leap last year, improving his efficiency inside the arc (though he still can't shoot). He averaged 13.7 PPG on a .484 eFG%, 7.7 RPG and 3.3 APG in AAC play, but he didn't play any teams from the Power 6.

Which is why averages minus context don't really tell the story. Putting up numbers in the Summit is different than putting up numbers in the AAC, and putting up numbers in the AAC is different than doing so in the Big Ten. Finding the level at which you belong is an important part of having a successful college career. I think Kevin has done that, just like Charlie Easley has.

We're seeing that Scheierman and Griesel both CAN translate to the high-major level after 3-4 years of development. I am curious what their careers would have looked like had they gone to Nebraska or Creighton straight out of high school.
