Why don't we have a closer?

That miniscule strike zone in the top of the 9th has completely expanded in the bottom of the 9th.

Gomes is not pitching due to an injury, and the defense didn't help.  Make a routine play and we are out of the inning with no damage.

 

We lost a Friday starter, and had to move Frank to that spot.  We also lose Bunz, who would probably be our closer.

Gomes isn't a closer. Yeah the Bunz injury hurt, but why don't we have more than 1 guy that can close?

Gomes was a Freshmen All American closer.  I think going into the season, Gomes was the closer.  If not Gomes, Bunz would be the obvious choice.  Now, we're to our 3rd choice.  Olson seems like he is the next in line.  He really didn't pitch horribly.  He gave up a weak infield single, gets squeezed on the walk, and made an 0-2 mistake.  He has been up and down so far this year.  Without Gomes, we either count on freshmen or sophomores to get the tough outs to save Bragg or Olson for the true closer role.  Either that or extend Bragg and Olson to get the tough outs and hope they can go multiple innings to finish the games.

 

I agree we do not have a Spencer type closer to come in and shut the other team down, but there's a reason he was drafted in the 2nd round

Making the Big 10 tournament is going to be a pipe dream with this team.  We have no healthy pitching.  Our hitters have one good game a weekend and then go to sleep the rest of the weekend.  Our infield defense is dreadful.  Other than all that, our team is alright.

This has been reallllllly disappointing.  In reality, we probably should have been swept this weekend.
