Road win 101

A. Win battle of the boards. Check

B. Hold team 10pts. below season average.  56ppg. Well maybe not

C. Win the game at the foul line.  Aka attack the paint.  Perhaps not.

I have no idea why we refuse to defend on the road, or why we think we can just spot up and shoot.

I guess a win is a win no matter how terrible we manage the fundementals.

The key to the team’s post-season success is its ability/willingness to play sustained and intense team defense, especially since it doesn’t have the overall quickness to compensate for individual defensive lapses.  The team can score, albeit inefficiently at times due to turnovers, but in its 2 huge wins they won because they held high-powered Indiana and Michigan to under 60.  So they’re capable.

Yet last night the mediocre at best Badgers dropped 70, and last week equally average Penn State put up 83.  In those two games we displayed weakness in defending BOTH the 3 and the backdoor cut, while most decent teams should be able to take away at least one.

Sorry to sound negative after an important road win, but I firmly believe the team has Sweet 16 potential with the right matchups and defensive commitment.  But if they flame out defensively they might not be dancing at all.

As mentioned above, it is good to see Williams starting to use time outs versus poorly in many games!  Nice to get the win and get to 21 wins plus with fewer turnovers (nonetheless Haiby had 5 and Shelley 3).   What was up with Kendall Coley not getting in the game (she has played in 26 of 28 games) as she is a player you hink we would want to keep around?

I too wonder about Coley. In the 5 games since Feb. 12, she has played a total of 11 minutes.  (zero minutes vs Penn State and Wisconsin)

On the surface......I don't know....must be more to it than is obvious.

Looking at the stats Coley's one of the better shooters on the team...FG's high % and also high % on 3's.  She can shoot the three well.

Have to play to get better. She has good size and length, Good speed on the court.  She was about #40 rated player in US out of HS.

Is she maybe hurt or something? Would think we'll need her down the road next year(s).

I just want to chime in and give the ladies props for getting it done on the road.  Wasn't able to listen to most of the game.  We saw last time you don't want to take anything for granted, and being where UW sits in the standings it was a must win really.  Now we want to protect the home court against a very capable NW team.  Exciting stretch ahead as we finish the season.  Keep fighting Red!

I like everyone else wonder about Coley.  Hopefully it's not because she has already made a decision to transfer or anything like that.  Obviously she has potential and I would like to have her length, quickness, skill and overall athleticism on the court for years to come.  🙏 🤞

Wisconsin did practically everything correct to put themselves in position for a win......shot the ball very well (inside and out) and very good defensive game plan. yet,  could not pull out a 'w'. huskers held their composure after the back-to-back 3's by wiscy. very nice work.

I would think Coley is not seeing the court due to her defense as a 4.

That could be something that affects her playing time.  With Stewart side-lined, and AS off the roster, we could use the help.  If defense is a concern, I hope they are working on it in practice.  As mentioned in other posts, she has as much potential as anyone on the team.

"If defense is a concern, I hope they" ...... hire a defensive specialist as the new asst. coach. Kind of seems to an issue that needs study/help. We're better defensively many times this year...just needs more consistency maybe.  Teach Coley, Stewart, ...everybody ..coach them up to be defensively strong.

Defense can be taught.

Frost made changes to address needs of the football offense.

seems to me, Coley (along with a couple of others) have a tendency to get beat off the dribble when away from the basket.

Even Cayton, with all her quickness, seems to be playing defense from the side.  I hate to say it, but Scoggin was better at staying in front of her player, than most.  And she is/was probably less athletic than the others.

Amy has her in the wrong position as noted by many posters previously. She is definitely not a forward/post.   In the big ten you need a lot of beef/strength.  She did ok during non conference but once in the conference things ramp up physically big time.  I don't think Kendall will leave.  Too many positives here including she is best friends with VB setter Kennedi Orr.       As for getting beat on defense I notice that as well.  Jazz Shelley as much as anybody.  I have to think it's partially the scheme and taking a partial fake by the player they are guarding and then getting beat as they try to change direction.
