Just read how small Harbaugh's buyout at Michigan is and it almost made me cry.

I was numb after the game yesterday.  That told me that apathy has set in.  For a diehard like me this a hard blow to the solar flex.  Dang.

I had a section mate leave ahead of me and she indicated her Husker relationship is the most toxic relationship she's ever been in...that kinda says it all.

I personally hate buyouts.  The concept of, “if you are so bad at your job and we have to fire you, we’ll give you a ton of money to leave” makes beyond no sense to me.  It’s just stupid.  You pay people millions to do a high profile job like this.  If they fail, they should be fired like a normal person.

Now it is standard to include these clauses on coaching contracts.  It would be hard to walk back this practice.

A Power-5 DI coach isn't "like a normal person" though.

Just like how an executive at a Fortune 100 company getting a hefty severance package isn't like a "normal" person who gets fired at their company.

An incredibly apt description.

Doesn’t make it right though.  Or make it make sense.

Yeah, can certainly argue that point.

I bet it started making its way into contracts to attract coaches to either rebuilds or super high expectation programs to ensure they have some landing point if they fail.

I have been losing interest in college basketball as a whole for several years now. Always watch NU but rarely take in other games any more. This team is pushing me to quit watching altogether.

I guess I'm just a couple steps ahead of you because I can't even stand to watch the 'Skers any more.  Maybe that will change in the future, and I hope it does, but I'll be surprised.  The college game is no fun for fans of all but about 20 teams.  And that might be generous even.

The problem isn't that highly skilled, productive leaders are overpaid (though many are) it's that this model is designed to reward people who fail. We aren't moving on from Fred because ha has a .590 winning percentage and an NIT 3rd place finish. In business and in sports, the buyout should only apply if you meet certain standards and to be honest FH and his agent would have agreed to a winning percentage of say 40% as a minimum when they signed.... that's fair and was easily within expectations (joke is on us all) you can't lose, fail, ruin, and profit that's a dead end system

It's possible that our lawyers have learned a thing or two with the last two major head coaching hires in the athletic department...

It's just paying him for the contract they both signed.  I'm sure there are items in the contract where he wouldn't receive the buyout (low graduation rates, ncaa violations, etc.)  For some reason,  losing games is not a reason to fire with cause. If you don't meet a quota, you still receive unemployment. Coaches still receive buyouts even if they don't win.
