One Week From Tonight

It all starts again.  Excited to see the WB team on the floor beginning a new season.  A lot of speculation from the past off season about how they will do.  Who will play.  How each player will do with the minutes they get.  Will the team chemistry and camaraderie be as good as expected.  It's only an exhibition game but we should start to get some answers to these questions. Competition will be there we just need to stay healthy.

So I think we see a couple of freshman in the starting lineup. My five are Haiby, Issie, Coley, Markowski, and Jaz as our point.

can't argue that...

i just think it is really going to be a battle.....i'm hoping for a finish at 6th in the BigTen. i'm guessing it will be a fight with nw, msu, and minnie for that spot.

At the point Jaz, 2 spot Sam, 3 Coley, 4 Issie, 5 Bella, to start.    Go with experience.

But this first one is a scrimmage really, so Coach could do about anything.

Anticipate everyone will play ..... entire bench will hit the floor. Really want to see all the true freshmen play. Markowski (we know what she can do) & especially Weidner ...how she looks in the college game ...and Moriarty's defense.

Might be so much subbing in and out, it may be hard to get a real look at the "newbies" to the squad.  But's time to fire away....enough practice ! This seems to be a positive energy team Get that vibe anyway..

Lets go with what I think Amy will do, which is not exactly what I think she should do.  Bella, Issy, Sam, and Ashley are automatic. No way someone loses a starting spot over the summer. That would be crushing to their confidence. The last one is harder, probably Shelley, but would not be shocked if it was Ruby.  Coley, I know, except i hear she is now a 4.  At this point the newbies know about 33% of the offense, that's it.  Early on last year you could see they were winging it often, and then Sam would drive or someone shoot a 3.  Had no choice last year having so few players, not the case now.

It could take a few games for us to see a pattern of starters, subs, etc. Feel like Brown, and Scoggin will be our 3 point specialists. I could also see Moriarty in a starting spot especially if her defense is there.

Have to include Jaz Shelly to the 3 shooters group. I'm pretty sure she had like 10 three pointers in an game at Oregon.  ...at a 40+ % clip for the season.  I understand she has shot well in practice.

Coley will shoot the 3 also. Last years B1G playing experience, and all the practices will give her a head start this season. Still is a freshman.

While we were at it I looked up the stats; and was surprised at the number of Three-Point shooters we have:   :wow:

(2020/21 season)

Annika Stewart:  29/65 = .446

Whitney Brown: 20/53 = .377

Sam Haiby:  40/107 = .374

Ashley Scoggins: 43/116 = .371  (IIRC she she won the 3-pt shooting contest)

Kendall Coley: 7/22 = .318  (partial season - only 12 games played)

Issie Bourne: 19/60 = .317

and

Jaz Shelley 47/112 = .420 (@ Oregon)

Trinity Brady played in two games and made 3 of 5 three-pt attempts (.600) but there is a news void as to her status)

So we Do Have some Shooters who can Bury the Three.   :Cheer2: :Cheer2: :Cheer2:

i actually forgot she took that many 3's......with the number of 3 point shooters, wonder if Issie will take that many this season? wonder if they have had her working on that mid-range jumper? if i was a betting man, think i just might take the under on that one.

definitely see Coley's going way up.

won't be long now and we will see.

One of the keys to having success with the 3 point shot is getting the ball to the shooters at the right time.  That's where improved passing as previously mentioned could really help our offense.  Drive in and then pass back out.

And a (couple of) good Point Guards!

Amy is not a "pass first" point guard kind of coach. She often wants them to drive or shoot first. Traditional pass first players like Bria Stallworth and Mackenzie Helms never really fit in and tried to become scorers which made things worse.  Scoggin over Helms last year is an example of this...shooter over passer.  Hoping Weidner can do both.

Good thoughts, Everyone!

This season is such an unknown.  With the Huskers being shut-out (Again), in the Big Ten pre-season rankings (https://bigten.org/news/2021/10/26/general-maryland-tops-big-ten-womens-basketball-preseason-rankings.aspx), seemingly they don't know what to make of it either. index.php

Like last season; this year, so far, is an enigma.  Not much was expected from last year's team, but somehow, someway they all pulled together, seemingly through sheer will, to battle to a .500 season; and only one game shy of .500 in conference.   Try as I might, I'm hard pressed to come up with an offensive identity for us last season (well other than getting Kate the ball under the basket), except great individual efforts strung together at critical moments to keep us in games and competitive (Sam driving to the basket, Ashley, and others, hitting treys or making plays at opportune moments).  I believe it was our defense that kept us in a lot of games by shutting down the other team's 'scoring machines.'   Grit! No Quit! Huskers!

But enough of last season.  Despite Kate Cain leaving, we'll still have a lot of Defensive Power with Bella & Annika down low; and Issie, Ruby, Mi'Cole, Whitney (apologies to anyone I haven't mentioned yet) to disrupt other teams' offenses.  Nonetheless, I think it will the offense where we'll see the greatest upside from the incoming recruits.  The number of three-point shooters was an eye-opener for me.  This shooting talent should spread the floor, opening up the driving lanes more, that I think we'll have the talent (in addition to Sam) to exploit.   This in turn should make for more opportunities for our 'Shooters' to get open, hopefully exploited by passing guards with good floor vision (vs seemingly getting all bunched up, along with the defenders, under the basket last year).  No doubt those with a better understanding of the x's & o's will have a lot more input.  We (and the B1G) will see.
