These non losing weeks are going to add up... if we continue to not play until the end of the year, we might end up with a top 50 NET.  BUBBLE BABY!

192. Fairfield

193. Nebraska

194. Kennesaw State

That Kennesaw St. win is looking better by the day!

  • 1 month later...

Okay, so it's been over two months since I've done a legit update in this thread, which I warned everyone about in the last update:

Quote

Full disclosure.  As this looks to most likely be our last day after a win for at least a month, these KenPom updates may be...let's just say, sparse...for the time being.  I have a lot of trouble mustering the energy to keep these up for this team this year.

But thanks to @hhcmatt's prodding, I guess I will go ahead and get things updated today.  We did move up 29 spots after last night so that's pretty good.  We aren't the only triple digit team in the Big Ten, which is also I suppose somewhat comforting.  Penn State is dangerously close to making that number three.

Continuing the narrative on NC State, I'm not sure what happened to them.  They were #61 when we played them, and now they are almost as far down as we are.  I remember when I was thinking that taking that team to 4OT's was a sign of progress.  Now, not so much.

Other teams that have made some surprising moves include Western Illinois.  They were in the 150's at Christmas time, but got decimated in Summit League play and are now almost back down as far as they were when we played them.  Sam Houston State, however, is killing it in the WAC and went from the 250's at the end of December to their highest ranking all season now (well, a week ago...they've lost a couple in a row and are just a shade below us).  Idaho State is down about 100 spots from when they played us, and Southern is up about 100.

So, enjoy this interim KenPom update folks.  This may be the last one until the final rankings come out.  Or maybe I'll do a post-Big Ten tournament update as well.

In the other teams of interest category:

Colorado is #83 (with an outside shot at a first day bye in the Pac 12 tournament) and San Jose State is #293 (and are a stone cold lock for last place in the MW and will likely end the season with just one conference win, so we sure did make the right move replacing Tim Miles!!!)

Here we go!

Their starting center Manny Bates was lost to start the season and that reality didn't hit until they started to play good teams.

So… we’ve technically only beaten the bottom two teams in conference outside of us according to metrics.  Despite the standings?

Also, PSU makes out only win inside the Top 100.

This would be correct.  Yes.  Even if we had pulled off the upset against NC State that wouldn't be a top 100 win any more.

Spot on.  He is a way-above-average rim protector and his offense and rebounding had steadily improved during his first couple of seasons.  Losing him was a huge blow to their prospects this season.

Since @hhcmatt asked nicely...

Gonna keep it short and sweet.  Not much has changed in the past two days except for the third W up in the B1G section.  So we have that going for us, which is nice.

Due to the vagaries of the schedule, NU only got to play the other bottom three teams (Minnesota, PSU and Maryland) once.  What are the odds?

Needless to say NU would probably have a couple more wins on their record had they played at least two of these teams twice.

The only 2x in the "final five" was Northwestern, which were total missed opportunities. On the flip side, our NU was only playing Purdue, Illinois, and MSU once.

Again, not much change, but a couple of things to note.  Wisco has dropped to #30.  Are they the lowest ranked Big Ten champion ever?  Possibly.  Also, we are now ranked above NC State for the first time this season.  Rutgers is ranked way lower than we were in 2018 and Lunardi has them in?  Poppycock.
